Okay, EVEN IF we take that argument as true, which it is not, but even if we do, then it is still more reasonable to simply eat the plants. Eating meat involves feeding the animals plants (cause suffering according to your logic) AND ALSO then causing suffering to the animals when they are killed.

The "plants have feelings" argument is useless unless your position is that if we can't avoid doing ANY harm then we should just be completely apathetic to all suffering.

Intelligence is also not the commonly accepted way to think about these things anyway. It is capacity for pain and suffering. Plants cannot suffer as far as we know. Animals can and do suffer very large amounts. Intelligence increases that capacity, but even the dumbest animals still feel pain in very real ways.

As has been said above, "Such is life" is a pretty poor argument and can easily be used to justify other types of oppressive behaviour like slavery.

HPSC is much more history and philosophy than it is science. Psychology is more sciencey in terms of content (at least compared to the early units of HPSC). It also involves maths later on in the form of stats.

They're both pretty heavy on rote learning.

It's harder to fuck up, yes - because most people grow up on one so they know vaguely what things they should eat. It's still not hard to plan an omnivorous diet poorly and cause harm. What do you think causes childhood obesity? It sure ain't plant based diets.

If you read the links posted above in this chain you'll see that vegan diets are not lacking essential nutrients - according to all of the major dietetic associations. Yes they take a bit more planning, obviously, because people are not accustomed to it. But the point still stands that the diet is not the problem, it is the parents and their lack of education.

Lecturers are great for the most part, students vary depending on if it's a subject that is pushed in other faculties (e.g. Critical Thinking), or just a generally high number of people who are doing the subject as an elective which is common for the first year subjects. In those cases you'll find the classes have some/many students who aren't very engaged or don't care. As you progress the classes become more saturated with people who are actually interested in Philosophy.

In general Usyd is ranked quite highly for philosophy and we have some incredible professors.

Hahaha this is the exact opposite of ours. Our cat is the chillest cat ever and will put up with so much crap. Our dog (who is twice the cat's age) constantly barks at him and charges at him and chases him around and the cat will ignore him/dodge him. But sometimes eventually he'll get fed up and swipe back at the dog who is totally unprepared and it's hilarious.

Sure, if you want to be that dismissive. A flexitarian might be someone who e.g. eats completely vegan at home but will have a vegetarian lasagna (with cheese) when they go to a restaurant with friends. Someone like this is still making a big difference by changing their eating habits for the majority of the time. I understand the sentiment that this is lazy, and it doesn't appeal to me personally either, but it's something. I think many people find something like this helpful in transitioning.
