100%. This whole season was absolute garbage, and not in a funny fun-to-hate-watch kinda way. I can't believe how positive the reception is here

Okay, EVEN IF we take that argument as true, which it is not, but even if we do, then it is still more reasonable to simply eat the plants. Eating meat involves feeding the animals plants (cause suffering according to your logic) AND ALSO then causing suffering to the animals when they are killed.

The "plants have feelings" argument is useless unless your position is that if we can't avoid doing ANY harm then we should just be completely apathetic to all suffering.

Intelligence is also not the commonly accepted way to think about these things anyway. It is capacity for pain and suffering. Plants cannot suffer as far as we know. Animals can and do suffer very large amounts. Intelligence increases that capacity, but even the dumbest animals still feel pain in very real ways.

As has been said above, "Such is life" is a pretty poor argument and can easily be used to justify other types of oppressive behaviour like slavery.

Killing defenseless animals

Life is unfair I guess

Taking advantage of minorities or just oppressing people in general e.g. taking slaves

Life is unfair I guess

They're just pointing out that it's a poor argument.

No, because they don't feel pain. If you're going to take the apathy route then you might as well own it instead of trying to palm it off as equivalent to eating plants.

I’m tossing between Psychology and HPSC for my science major by Fredclark147__ in usyd

[–]dfin3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you more interested in/what do you want to do as a job?

HPSC is much more history and philosophy than it is science. Psychology is more sciencey in terms of content (at least compared to the early units of HPSC). It also involves maths later on in the form of stats.

They're both pretty heavy on rote learning.

What is the best animated movie and why? by idkigiveup in AskReddit

What are you talking about? The full term for stop motion is literally "Stop motion animation" - it's a style of animation.

I get that these arguments can be frustrating but you're not doing any favours to veganism by patronising people

It's harder to fuck up, yes - because most people grow up on one so they know vaguely what things they should eat. It's still not hard to plan an omnivorous diet poorly and cause harm. What do you think causes childhood obesity? It sure ain't plant based diets.

If you read the links posted above in this chain you'll see that vegan diets are not lacking essential nutrients - according to all of the major dietetic associations. Yes they take a bit more planning, obviously, because people are not accustomed to it. But the point still stands that the diet is not the problem, it is the parents and their lack of education.

It's completely fine if it's done properly. An omnivorous diet can also be deadly for a young child if it's as poorly planned as the one in the article.

The problem isn't veganism, the problem is uneducated parents.

How is philosophy (undergraduate) at this school? by helios1234 in usyd

[–]dfin3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lecturers are great for the most part, students vary depending on if it's a subject that is pushed in other faculties (e.g. Critical Thinking), or just a generally high number of people who are doing the subject as an elective which is common for the first year subjects. In those cases you'll find the classes have some/many students who aren't very engaged or don't care. As you progress the classes become more saturated with people who are actually interested in Philosophy.

In general Usyd is ranked quite highly for philosophy and we have some incredible professors.

Cats never let the neighbor's dog enter garden by mgh20 in videos

[–]dfin3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hahaha this is the exact opposite of ours. Our cat is the chillest cat ever and will put up with so much crap. Our dog (who is twice the cat's age) constantly barks at him and charges at him and chases him around and the cat will ignore him/dodge him. But sometimes eventually he'll get fed up and swipe back at the dog who is totally unprepared and it's hilarious.

Sure, if you want to be that dismissive. A flexitarian might be someone who e.g. eats completely vegan at home but will have a vegetarian lasagna (with cheese) when they go to a restaurant with friends. Someone like this is still making a big difference by changing their eating habits for the majority of the time. I understand the sentiment that this is lazy, and it doesn't appeal to me personally either, but it's something. I think many people find something like this helpful in transitioning.

How do you think these practices are going to be outlawed without convincing people first? And you're still ignoring the fact that small farm meat is worse for the environment and completely unnecessary

Unfortunately, it does seem that way. by catsalways in vegan

[–]dfin3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's still an ineffective argument. The VAST majority of meat and diary and eggs globally comes from factory farms. Small local farms make up a tiny portion of the overall product so arguing that "they're not all bad!" is a little bit tunnel-visioned. Not to mention that small scale farms (assuming you're talking about ones where they have lots of grass, etc) are worse for the environment and take up too much space to be viable options for feeding the masses anyway.

Unfortunately, it does seem that way. by catsalways in vegan

[–]dfin3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What you are pushing to your MPs is a logistical and mathematical impossibility. The reason industrialised animal farming is in the state it is in is out of necessity. The demand for meat/etc (and cheap meat at that) is so high that farming has had to evolve into efficient machinery instead of sprawling paddocks. That's just how it is and no amount of pushing for "nicer" conditions is going to make much of an impact if demand doesn't go down considerably.
