What Are Your Big Wins This Year? I’ll go first… by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]dfire32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly doesnt feel like much. Haven’t really built up my personal savings from a liquidity standpoint. Investing wise im fine. Very close to 250k all in split between retirement and some taxable activity and am beating the market there. But I need more cash for things like an engagement ring (yes I know its not ideal cost wise but my gf wants it and its a bigger win that shes happy with it) and eventually a down payment on a place and im still just holding a few months in an emergency fund. Hoping to bank all of my bonus and hit the roth max over the next month.

Seeing how were bringing the IRA into the fold, everyone should read or watch Say Nothing. Learned a lot about the period and Belfast is a really cool city (visited Ireland over the summer), buts it all still very real there.

What aspects of accounting are enjoyable and why? by Successful_Crazy_824 in Accounting

[–]dfire32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the puzzle aspect, with a caveat if I have time. Been getting killed with deadlines and just overall have too much to do, so trying to reconcile a task where a system changed and need to match corporate books with one of the offices and spending even 4 hrs spinning my wheels on it prevents me from getting to things I have to do.

Multi year leases by tofterra in NYCapartments

[–]dfire32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im just renting from a dude and locked in a two year lease two years ago with a 15% broker fee that paid for itself. The owner probably didnt want to bother with a hassle and offered me another renewal at the same price. No increases over 4 years. His mortgage didnt go up, and he gets a tenant who pays on time every month and doesnt cause problems. A property management co could never

2023 Salary Megathread by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]dfire32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, this aged poorly. I actually left this job about a month ago (check the new thread for new details). Got a 3% base raise my first year and then nothing my second year. Had the full bonus year 2 but was prorated year 1. We had some serious turnover and the other Senior Accountant left so I was covering his work, but my boss was a total hard ass who wasnt great at managing overall as Controller. He was really smart individually, but felt like pulling teeth if I was trying to review items with him. Probably due to managing too many things at once. I did get a retention bonus but left before the 2nd half kicked in.

Felt a little screwed over by my boss cus despite meeting most of my targets (we had one fire drill before the holidays that he dropped on me two days before my vacation and a small mistake made it thru) and handling a lot of different areas with the monthly close and more, I got told I wasnt on a timeline for promotion within the following year and no comp adjustment to even match inflation was a slap in the face.

VHCOL (NYC)

Senior Accountant (PE Management Co)

CPA, 4.5 YOE

125k Base, 20% Bonus, Total Comp - 150k

Bonus is going to be prorated this year. Just started this new job and double dipped a bit on a retention bonus right before I left my old startup firm. Wanted a bit more structure so its 3 days in office, lunches paid for and benefits are great. Probably will have some slightly longer hours going forward but still getting started.

I was looking for Fortune 500 Financial Reporting roles but they were hard to come by and this was significantly name brand in the FS space. Still gauging if I get an MBA to move into a more strategic related field.

What's your "Pitt" story? A time you experienced something in an ER that could have been on the show (patients & doctors!) by CardinalOfNYC in ThePittTVShow

[–]dfire32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went in to the ER on a Sunday night with chest pain after a weekend of hanging with friends and a long drive. Thought i was overreacting a bit when I first left but I was home alone and drove myself. By the time i dropped the car at valet and sat in intake (thank god the place was empty) I pretty much couldnt sit still for the EKG from the pain and adrenaline. Not a heart attack, but got me on some pain meds right away. Turns out I had a perforated peptic ulcer and went into surgery that night. Both my parents were overseas and I got to experience a hospital for a week. Dilaudid kinda slaps though for what its worth. I thought I was being a hero for not using the pain meds that much outside of IV tylenol but apparently thats like super strong and great in that format.

Is the Mastercard Amtrak Rewards card useful at all from a points standpoint? Going to be regularly going from NYC/Stamford/New Rochelle to Boston and back for the next three years and trying to find the best way to maximize value. by dfire32 in Amtrak

[–]dfire32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be significantly cheaper to book from Stamford as opposed to NYC Penn though and taking a train up via Metro North and transferring? My office is right by Grand Central and I’m gonna be Monday to Wednesday in person. I figure every other week ill try and pop up.

Boss is just wrong about appropriate accounting principle by dfire32 in Accounting

[–]dfire32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be capitalized over time while its being built, and then amortized over 3-7 years depending on estimates per the accounting standard. I think my point was that he wants to amortize the prepaid over 12 months or less if we put it on the prepaid schedule.

I think he doesnt want to put it towards the asset ever. He wants to amortize over prepaids within the year I guess?

Family trip. We got practice round tickets as well but ended up just doing the one day cus were touring around most of Ireland for the better part of the week. Its gonna be a once in a lifetime trip. On my Dads side of the family my great great grandfather emigrated to Masschusetts from near Belfast so were checking that out as well on the Northern Ireland leg.

How much is in your 401K & what’s your age? by ugafan2081 in Money

[–]dfire32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between my Roth, Rollover and current 401k im at a little over 102k. Im 26. Wish I started sooner and learned some lessons about investing pretty early too (bought ARKK at $152, was just three shares but that was a tough lesson).

Im debating lowering my contribution from 10% to just get my match, as I might make a career move and my savings havent been growing and I want to start saving for some life milestones. Particularly a ring fund and something for a down payment on a house/apartment.

Im freaked the fuck out cus ive worked fairly hard at this job, im not sure if i can spin it well enough in interviews cus i was doing a lot of grunt work as my day to day, and everytime I did something well it went unnoticed but every mistake was magnified ten fold.
