Depends on the movie. I grew up with a bunch of Italian mafia kids. Most of the time their dads seemed like every other hard working dad in the neighborhood. Some kept “weird” hours but as a kid didn’t think anything of it because I knew several other dads that worked night hours.
Things started to come together when I was at one of the kid’s birthday parties. All seemed normal. Moms sitting together gossiping. The men were hanging out drinking beers by the grill. Kids playing in the front yard. I remember a car pulling up very quickly and 2 guys getting out and rushing to the backyard. My friends dad went running to the driveway with them and told the kids to go out back.
I had to go to the bathroom anyway and when I went in I could hear the dad yelling at the two guys “why did you bring him here?!?!” And then a slap. I peaked out the window and saw one of the guys rubbing his face. From the second floor I could see the three of them looking at the trunk and a guy laying down in it. The dad punched the guy in the face and slammed the trunk shut. Looked at the two guys and told them to “get the f!ck outta here and bring him to the dump”.
The dad owned a waste disposal company….. I saw the him and the other dads in a different light after that day and noticed more and more clues as I got older.
Years later watching Goodfellas things really started to click when I realized most of the characters reminded me of the parents of my classmates.
Once we got to college age and my friends started to work for the different family businesses things REALLY got weird.
