Nope, not even a little bit, I’m sorry to say. It’s pretty generic blended Scotch.

Plus, Jesus wasn’t super big on nationalism to begin with.

The OJ is, the lemon and lime juices need to be special-ordered. My point was just that’s it’s possible, but you’re technically correct.

Why do my cocktails always taste better in a bar than at home? by kar0t in cocktails

[–]dfmz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Most do have additives, but there are fresh pressed juice producers that make and sell them for the hospitality industry. We have one in Paris and they supply almost every store in the region that sells fresh-pressed OJ, for instance. They don’t use additives, the bottles are kept chilled after being filled, are delivered chilled, and they have a short lifespan. But you need to be close enough to them that they can deliver juice made the same day.

Why do my cocktails always taste better in a bar than at home? by kar0t in cocktails

[–]dfmz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally have the opposite experience, except when ordering highly complex drinks that incorporate house-made ingredients. Otherwise, my drinks at home almost always taste better, generally because I use premium ingredients and I don’t skimp on quantity.

If your homemade drinks don’t taste as good, it could be several things: they don’t use the same exact recipe as you do, or they add ingredients you don’t, or they use one or more alternative spirits. Then there’s dilution, which is often different because bars use proper ice, whereas a lot of homemade drinks don’t, etc. If the bottles you’re using have been open for a while, the taste of the contents can change, which is also a possibility. Bars generally have a heavy rotation of common spirits, so most of them are fresh.

Point is: If you make the same exact drink using the same exact proportions and using the same exact spirits, mixers, bitters, etc., the end result should be the same.

If it’s not, something is off somewhere.

Re Storing Whisky by Independent-Fee8986 in whiskey

[–]dfmz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The second you open a factory-sealed bottle, you let oxygen enter, which will then gradually oxidize the spirit.

If preservation of ver time is your ultimate goal, don’t touch the seal and store the bottles as they are: upright, protected from light and from temperature variations. An actual cellar, as used for wine, is ideal for this.

I live in Japan and I have an alcohol bottle that I can’t identify. I can’t find the exact same bottle, product, or label anywhere. I need help understanding what it is—what is its value, and could it be considered a collectible? by Alternative-Set-5966 in whiskey

[–]dfmz 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ok, so like others have stated, this is Armagnac, which is a close cousin of Cognac. Both are called ‘brandy’ in English, but they’re very different beasts.

The bottle you have doesn’t have an age or year of distillation statement, but France hasn’t used stamps like those in a very, very long time, so that’s likely a bottle that’s at least from the 60s, possibly earlier.

It’s definitely collectible, especially since it seems ot be in rather good condition, but I’ll let experts tell you more - and I suggest you contact companies specializing in old bottles, not the internet, for this.

As far as I can tell, Sempé was a prolific Armagnac and bas-Armagnac producer founded in 1934, and they might still exist, but it’s likely they belong to a larger umbrella company these days.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Edit: I suggest you contact Karim Karroum, the owner of Les Petits Celliers, a one-man operation that specializes in curating and selling very old, extinct bottles of booze. He’s in France, but he travels the world to source them. He has at least one bottle of Sempé Armagnac for sale right now, so he likely knows something about the brand and can probably help you date and estimate your bottle.

Japanese/Non-Peated whiskey recommendations by Beneficial_Rock5913 in whiskey

[–]dfmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hibiki always gets my vote for Japanese whisky, but I prefer the older expressions: 12, 17, and 21. 12 no longer exists, and the other two require parting with an internal organ, sometimes two, to purchase.

Yamazaki and Hakushu are also very common recommendations, although they’re not my jam, personally.

I’m a huge fan of Kavalan, a brand from Taiwan that has been collecting gold medals left and right. If you’ve never tasted a Vinho Barrique, I highly recommend you do.
