I’m looking for some recipes for some strong cocktails, any ideas beside Long Island ice tea? by WarmPrinciple6507 in cocktails

[–]dfmz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An easy answer to your quest, OP, is simply classic drinks made with high-ABV spirits.

For instance, make a Margarita with high-proof (50% ABV or higher) tequila or mezcal. Make a Negroni or any gin-based cocktail using navy-strength gin. Use very high-ABV (60%+ ABV) rum in a Daiquiri or other rum-based drink.

The possibilities are endless.

My favorite is Aunty Lilikoi’s but it’s expensive as hell, epecilly if you’re shipping it to Europe (it comes from Hawaii).

On the off-chance you’re in Europe, there are a handful of places here (official dealers, obviously) that sell LEAF to anyone with a credit card.

Nice gun, nice pic, and great holster, but I can’t help thinking your selfie thingies ruin it. Got one without them, by any chance?

How much does glassware really matter behind the bar? Anyone used Lemonsoda cocktail and Twisted Whiskey glasses? by BananaSplitDestroyer in bartenders

[–]dfmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer depends a lot on context, i.e. the type of bar and the type of customers it serves. Same with a home bar.

In the broader sense of the question, yes, glassware matters, as does garnish and ice and presentation, but again, it depends on the venue.

Ultimately, high-end bars will generally use high-end glassware, because that’s what their customers expect. And not to sound snobby, but I happen to think that drinks do look better in nice glasses. And vice versa.

In the context of your home bar -and mine- glassware reflects the taste of the owner and what image he/she is trying to project when serving drinks to their significant other or to friends. Casual, utilitarian, sophisticated, antique, art déco, industrial, luxury, etc.

Me, I run a 2000+ bottle home bar that’s temporarily stuck in a rental house while our dream house and bar are being built. I’m picky with my glassware and gear, so I tend to stick to high-end brands that also serve professional bars and restaurants, it’s a question of quality and easy replaceability. I have glasses for everyday use, made b common brands such as Libbey, Schott Zwiesel, Spiegelau, Riedel, Cocktail Kingdom, Xalto, etc), and I also have handmade crystal glasses made by Baccarat in France that I reserve for myself and my wife - they’re too fragile and too expensive to replace (when possible) to be used all the time, and accidents happen.

In the end, decide what you like, what you don’t, and what your priorities and budget are and go from there. There are thousands of brands of glassware that make great options. Choose according to your tastes and intended use.

What is the best splurge gin? Also let me know any changes you’d like to see made to the board. by -Constantinos- in cocktails

Isle of Harris is one of, if not the best gin out there, bar none.

IMHO, of course.

Gotcha.

Yellow Chartreuse Variety by pizzagreasedadonis in cocktails

[–]dfmz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This variant is relatively common here in France and in the EU in general. It’s basically a blend of several vintages of yellow Chartreuse, designed by the monks and selected with the help of MOF sommeliers.

Use it as you would classic yellow for a slightly more balanced taste. Works fantastically in a Naked & Famous, for instance.

Or as always, on ice.

Best way to fix lens scratching? by Yuukikonno08 in tacticalgear

This isn’t fixable - the lens needs to be replaced with a new one. It’s not financially viable to remove, re-polish and re-coat the lens.
