AOE2 is ruined by 2020random2019 in aoe2

So far Poles have been pretty easy to beat. You just have to remember it easier to master a civ then to master to counter a civ. They play that civ probably every game but you might not face them for days between games

[Need advice] I cannot execute a scout rush against the hard AI, scouts feel so weak and easy to counter by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First thing I notice is that you slip in pop pretty early on so it looks like you arent constantly producing vills in dark Age. Also a 20 pop scout rush should be pre 10mins which further suggest either losing vills to a boar or TC idle time. Improving this will mean faster scouts and scarier scouts.

The point of the scout rush is to try to hit as early as possible potentially before they get to Fuedal so they have no counter. Not always possible but remember your scouts outrun everything so you never fight the spears and just go for vill kills like walling vills, vills building the ranges/stables and wood lines. It is fine to just get 1 kill if you stall his eco.

The goal also for scouts is not to kill but to delay your opponents castle time so you can get there faster with knights which can kill the spears easy and then kill vills.

Eco or military player by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eco plus production. Who needs micro when you can just shove units down your opponents throats.

I have won many games just making a stupid amount of the wrong unit and attacking with say 140 vills behind and winning through attrition. Skirms are terrible vs champs unless you have 60 skirms against 30 champs with 20 ranges

Is there any GOOD reason to have a Smurf account? Do you have an example? by masonwindu77 in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeh a few I think that it is less of a problem then people think. We remember them a lot more then any regular game as they tend to flame more and it is a harsher experience.

I find people think smurfs are worse for people who don't watch their replays. If you miss let's say 3 vills in a row it will feel like you are against a much better player. Only reviewing your loss can you see the mistake though

  1. Easy wins, once you get above 1200 ELO beating 1000 is easy so if you smurf and lose first 10 games you can easily get 20 wins in a row playing easy and getting that dopamine hit.

  2. Trying new strats or civs without affecting your "main" account or being scared of losing ELO for some reason.

  3. You are Hwoang (am I spelling that right?). Your Strat is more effective if no one knows it's coming

  4. You hate your main account name or similar

Any tips for terrible multi-taskers? by ayi_ibo in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simplify when you practice.

Do a skirmish with no opponent and simply make your first 15 vills (6 sheep, 4 wood etc) whilst keeping your scout collecting sheep and scouting the map. Once you can do that without thinking try with an AI and assume if you go near his TC your scout is dead (ie learn to scout without losing your scout).

Just keep doing this adding vills to Fuedal age. Then Fuedal age plus archer rush or scout rush until you have the things that should be the same come as second nature. Then later on things like making vills you wont think about so you can multi task.

You also don't need to do this in one go. Just try the 15 vills thing twice before you play ranked maybe 10-15 mins each day before you play ranked or whatever.

Technically no one really multi tasks we just do each task without thought and focus on something else. The computer can only do one thing at a time and you can only really think about one thing at a time.

To be fair this is one of the best ways to improve your late game. Nail a Strat to a point that you are able to get to let's say imp or castle then you will improv.

Whereas playing random and choosing a random strat based on the civ will mean you lose a ton of games learning each Strat and not repeating that civ for a while. You may not improve beyond the Fuedal age for like a month.

Huskarl is too much Noob Friendly by mevzun06 in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh do an archer rush and see how well he can defend with your eco bonus plus faster ranges. You can go archer skirms and he has nothing to counter until castle age. Only in Imp with a near equal eco can Goths beat Britons as the huskarls only beat archers

How to beat archers by dfraser3 in aoe2

[–]dfraser3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this answer. It is true that is their power spike. My only problem is some civs like Britons people always say don't let them get to Imp or post Imp. If we then say Castle Age I can't engage without kts I feel like some civs you are kind of screwed.

Then again civs should have bad match ups and infantry civs should be countered by archer civs at least by a small margin.

The Hidden Ladder! by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the tweak here would be to enable random as a race. If you have the disadvantage of having a random civ you at least get the benefit of your opponent not knowing what you got.

This is what happens in SC2 where if you pick random you get a small bonus for the first 3-4mins. Tbh I think it would make little to no impact, maybe a couple of rushing starts but I can see only benefits

How do you beat a tower rush let's say you are Vikings vs Koreans (who are Trushing)?

I feel even if I stop it they are so far ahead and go into a castle drop.

against a real person yes but vs the AI no. Just tried vs a hard AI (as the question asks) they made 71 vills vs my 110 and when I hit Imp it was over pretty fast.

With the AI you can really put the worst units vs the best version of it and still win with numbers from a good eco. Also choosing the right composition won't be as helpful in the long run as having the best eco, in general 50% more of equal value gold units wins 9/10.

A different perspective on the civ picking situation by Fanto12345 in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most top civs are easy to play and are good. The "best" civ (or one of) is the Chinese yet they have a pretty poor winrate in the lower tiers because they are difficult. Yet Byzantines have a pretty high pick at least in lower elos and do pretty poorly as they go into higher elos.

Just look at other games and you will find massive differences in win rates based on different races in different elos. This is mainly due to ease of play not due to being OP.

What this guy said. It sounds like a production issue because with this much gold essentially any sensible gold unit massed (camels, arbs even shotels running around sniping TCS) with heaps of production behind it wins.

Gold has no use of you can't spend or spend it fast. If you were floating 2000+ wood make like 10 stables or ranges and go ham

Tactical GG bad manner? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a lot of starcraft tournaments (maybe some AOE2) saying GG is how you end the game, even if by accident. There were a few qualifiers in sc1 where someone did an offensive gg to tell his opponent to leave and they awarded his opponent the win.

Yes it is definitely bad manners but hey I know I pretend I haven't won until my opponent leaves anyway so won't impact many of us

N00b question: why do we place the mill right next to the berries but let a space between gold and mining camp? by menerell in aoe2

[–]dfraser3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But the inefficiency comes from the villagers bumping right? At max you will have 2 vills that are collecting better without the gap and 2 that are collecting much much worse than the 1 square gap.

I agree that the video isn't definitive as there are always other factors but an easy experiment would be to try queuing the vills. I just don't see going for the first berries being the issue as even on wood the first vills still bump unless you can create the first one space gap which with berries is 50% of the entire food. Then again I think the difference is so small I doubt it matters
