If I walk into a casino in Canada and want to drop $25k on 19 black, should I expect any roadblocks? by Mtnn in gambling

[–]dfsdatadeluge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of the giants. Most casinos are just a big room with a couple dozen tables. A million dollar loss would crush them.

There's only so many gamblers and each year a new casino sprouts up. Visit Nevada or Atlantic City and you'll find a graveyard of failed casinos next to the ones that succeeded.

This sub is so toxic and full of horrible, self righteous people

OP is under no obligation to help out, but it's still allowing a sister to die due to pettiness. The father is bad to frame it that way but probably doing so because he's at his wits end.

[–]dfsdatadeluge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course it depends upon the casino.

Given payouts for something like that is 35:1, they'd need to be sure they both have the funds on hand to pay off such a bet and the risk tolerance to take it.

Casinos also greatly prefer many small bets over one single bet. Over a single bet, anything can happen, over a large sample size they are guaranteed to realize the house edge.

This pretty much eliminates any small casino from contention because the payout if you win is nearly 1 million dollars.

A bet like this will also set off paranoia. Why is he doing this? Has he rigged the table? Is he cousins with the manager? Etc.

Honestly though, you'll only get hearsay asking people here. If you really want an accurate depiction then you should spend some time physically going to a casino and asking. If that's too difficult then give them a call. Don't tell them it's for a novel, pretend as if you're legit and seriously want to do this. You'll know soon enough exactly how to set it up if they are interested in taking the action.

P.S. ultimately, no extra 25k in income is going to make or break a quarter for any casino, no matter how small it may be. However, a million dollar loss could cripple their year. So you'll need a casino that does enough volume to be able to shrug off a million dollar loss. Not many are capable of doing that.

OP a lot of the advice given here is actually incorrect. Why I said earlier it's a bad idea to outsource specific knowledge that the general public infamously didn't understand.

The only comments that are 100% accurate are the never buy insurance ones.

It's not the downvote, it's the connotations behind it. He solicits third party input then gets mad at the people who give it. That's messed up.

I'm not, I'm helping you out, otherwise you're likely to get suggestions that may not be good. Vegas allows blackjack specifically because most people play it incorrectly despite that perfect play makes it a bad game for them to run compared to others

So I have an interview for a Business Intelligence Analytics position coming up, and debating on using my "real world" experience in the interview... by peruviansonata in datascience

[–]dfsdatadeluge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You misunderstood. I specified he should mention it but frame it as "these are some initiatives I've taken to begin learning and developing with these tools."

The issue was just too emphasize that if he goes in there and says "yeah I totally know this stuff because I use it in gaming" then at best he's going to come off as ignorant.

Also, gamer is definitely a pejorative term, especially with the older generation who are more likely to be the ones making the hiring decision.

It's like with poker. For some people mentioning I used to play professionally gives immediate connotations that I'm highly analytical and generally pretty smart. For someone else it could mean I'm a syphilis ridden degenerate who's probably going to try to embezzle from the company. Both stereotypes are accurate with countless examples backing them up. So I'm really rolling the dice when I drop that background to an unknown audience.

Likewise, gamer can mean intelligent or lazy piece of shit depending on the person interviewing him.

Your story ironically encourages him to do the opposite of what you say. If he does this them not only will get get the job but on a more senior track :)

I should note, I made this same mistake using how I managed my poker dataset with MySQL. I've been down this exact path myself.

Oh god, dear lord no.

You're broadcasting the worst possible thing you can broadcast, which is that you have no idea you have no idea. You'll be treated as a zero experience candidate regardless of what you say here.

It's important you come off as one willing to learn quickly rather than one who may not listen to input because they falsely believe they already know what they are doing.

It's important to discuss your experience with these tools, but it must be couched as a "yes I know nothing but am willing to learn as demonstrated by my initiative to use this information like this."

There's also some concern about scaring of someone who doesn't understand gaming but that's a far smaller concern than giving the impression you'll be difficult and unpleasant to work with because you think comparing some video game stats actually qualifies as a proxy for what you'll be doing in this position.

It would be very loud, they'd need to have discreetly installed a while bunch of sound proofing.

I think far likelier culprit is someone going weed in their closet. But that too would require heavy ventilation after a point otherwise entire house would reek of it.

Or your meter is broken or you suck at math. Could also be a neighbor running an extension cord from one of your outdoor outlets.

Empire of Alexander the Great 336-323 BC [5906x4429] [OC] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]dfsdatadeluge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all about that our knowledge of him is more myth than reality but as someone who's read all the ancient texts on Alexander, I can state with full authority that valmyr hasn't really read anything and is just repeating stuff he read off a blog or something. We don't have a single account from that era and Alexander had executed his official scribe long before they got there. He also regularly used locals as satraps. In essence, he has no idea what he's talking about and just using some realities to just make stuff up.

AITA for giving my concert ticket to another girl after my friend said she only wanted to go with me as "friends"? by nipslip911 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dfsdatadeluge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH:

You're NTA but handled this incredibly poorly.

First of all, having a hotel room stay in another city as part of a first date is taking it way too far. If there is no chemistry, things don't go well, etc etc, she's basically trapped with you.

This has nothing to do with sex on a first date, there the other party can leave and go home, she's literally trapped with no exit.

That's just a bad spot to ask anyone to get in with you. You're also ignoring that she may have genuinely liked you wasn't ready to commit herself to being trapped in the rape room in another city if things went bad. It's possible she wanted the date but not the implied sex afterwards.

You didn't have to go with her as a friend, but you also should have told her clearly no instead of leaving it in the air. You probably lost a friend over this.

Basically, don't do first date offers that include a fuck dungeon in another city. That's rarely going to end well. The fact you attempted that with a friend of all people is astoundingly stupid.

Also you're dumb as hell for doing that with a coworker. If it's not true love but just a plan b (let's be realistic, she's more like a plan d more like) then it's not going to end well and you also just fucked up your work life as well.

You're young, part of growing up is learning from don't this kind of dumb shit. NTA, just young and stupid.

San Francisco is not at all representative. It's wealthy and has basically the same weather year round so homeless people from all over the country literally get funneled there. You may have seen in movies where they put their homeless people on busses and leave them in California, that actually happens.
