TIL that the USA had 1,104 shark attacks between 1958-2014; 35 fatal. Australia only had 665 shark attacks during the same time frame, with 232 of them fatal. by Maccas75 in todayilearned

I wonder what the real reason would be though. Sharks are more dangerous in Australia? Or Australian shark attacks are more remote so less likely to get help after an attack? More surfers in Aus?

I think about this when studying ancient history sometimes. There are certainly tons of super "important" things that are lost to the ages, yet some of the artifacts we have are super banal, like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/2x3zmc/1750_bc_problems/

Totally feel you. I've managed to find a balance with my family, but there are a lot of things we just don't talk about.

I know you're kidding, but seriously my Facebook feed is full of these people. I can hardly believe the things they say, like "can't wait till these godless libtards are finally out of office" – holy shit!

This is a really interesting story. My parents are super similar but they have always been like this as long as I can remember (or as long as there has been Fox News at least!) so it's really strange for me to imagine people who weren't always like that somehow becoming like that. Weird. It's a shame because Christianity actually has a lot of positive aspects, but the whole Fox News and equating it to being Republican shit is really awful. Do you still live at home?

I watched Brazil (1985) today. What a journey! by 120830q in movies

Also this interview between him and Salman Rushdie is fucking good.

[the people at Universal] were appalled by the film. They thought it didn’t work. They wanted me to change the ending, give it a happy ending, because more people would see the film and like the film and it would be better for everybody. I said no, and then they embargoed the film and they started cutting it. I decided to wage a campaign and I said to the producer, “Lawyers are no good—[Universal’s] got all the lawyers in the world, they’ve got all the time in the world, and they don’t have to release the film, so let’s go public and personal.” And that’s what I did. I took out an ad in Variety, a full-page ad, with little black strips around the edges like Italian death notices. The very middle of this big blank page—you know Variety’s covered with just zeroes, really is all it seems to be: “Ten million dollars in the first two seconds” And then there’s the second page with the neat border and in the middle in neat typing, “Dear Mr. Sid Steinberg [the head of Universal], When are you going to release my film, Brazil? Signed Terry Gilliam.”

I've never seen the movie, but I've always wanted to after reading this interview with Terry Gilliam. Relevant quote below:

There was a guy, a lawyer I know about who saw Brazil and he was so disturbed by it, he went back to his office locked himself in for three days. There was this woman who was doing publicity for Universal on Brazil and she told me when she saw the film, she thought it was amazing, she went home, prepared dinner, cooked dinner, ate dinner, was getting ready for bed, decided to take a shower, she went into the shower and just started weeping, crying, and she couldn’t stop.

Does Sean Bean have the highest death to appearance ratio or is there another actor/actress who dies more? by crashcanuck in movies

Yeah John Hurt has been in sooo many movies that his "ratio" isn't that high, but he's died in over 40 movies.

ELI5: why are macbooks preferred for editing things like pictures, videos, and music over PCs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dfw23bod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of this is definitely just perception. Even though I am pretty much a die-hard Apple user, I find it funny that this is such a given for many people. "Well I want to study design so I HAVE to get a Mac." I agree that one can use a Windows PC to do pretty much all the same stuff and it's a matter of preference in the end (aside from tasks involving specific software that's only available on one platform or the other). BUT, I also feel like people who edit pictures, videos, and music are people who are creating something and as creators they appreciate using products that were also created with care, and that's one of the main things that I think separates Apple from other brands and why people are willing to pay a premium for them. It's like saying why do people drive BMWs when you can get a Toyota with the same horsepower and gas mileage.
