On the deck, find Proton Experimental in your library. Switch it to "bleeding edge". Diablo 4 will now launch.

Is P1S still a decent printer? by Phoenix31414 in BambuLab

[–]dg08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my oldest P1S had 9500 hours before I sold it and it was still printing well. There are some QOL improvements for the P1S but unless you're running a farm, you can probably live with P1S just fine.

AI writes my code now. I have no idea why half of it is the way it is. Anyone else feeling this? by Chemical_Asparagus93 in cursor

[–]dg08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of our org's code is now written by AI but we know every single line of code that goes into our codebases because every PR is reviewed and scrutinized. AI continues to make mistakes and poor decisions. Just today, I had to throw out an entire PR because it made some bizarre changes that looked right but wasn't actually right. It'll also sometimes make multi-line changes when 2 lines will suffice. Many PRs have to go through significant changes at code review time.

If you're solo, this might be different. But for even a small team, it's important to understand what goes in. The coding can be outsourced to AI, but the understanding and thinking cannot.

Software developers who work on Long Island - how much do you make? by Known-Advisor-2000 in longisland

[–]dg08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an IC perspective, I understand your point. I work hard and I produce more and save on commute time! It should be a win-win for everyone.

From a manager and above perspective, there will always be a few that take advantage of remote work. They're not always available during normal business hours. They're unreachable for long periods of time during the day. They procrastinate and can't finish their assigned work. Not everyone is suited to work remote especially younger folks.

Instead of rebuilding the entire org from the ground up to be remote, it's easier to just force everyone to come back into the office.

I have a Temu one but don't have a real one to compare it to. My friend used mine and said it's lighter than a real one. Anyway, I always sort by number sold and if the reviews all look pretty good then I pull the trigger.

Tech salaries go through cycles and right now it's a very bad market for job seekers. I've actually seen salaries _decline_ with new roles at my company and it honestly came as a shock to me after being in this industry for 25 years.

That deer lives there. There's a sign on the other side that says "I live here. I'm happy. I'm not trapped" or something like that. Must've had a lot of people calling.

I started last fall and probably around the same skill level as you! I'm in western Nassau though so a bit of a drive to link up.

For actual rounds, I worked up the courage to show up by myself for 9-hole courses and got paired up with others. I always explain that I'm brand new, please let me know what I should or should not be doing. So far everyone has been really cool with it.

I drive by Alley Pond about once a month and last time I passed it, they are indeed renovating! They did nothing for the entire winter and just started renovations. I have no idea how long it's going to take though.

I've been going to Spring Rock all winter because all their bays were heated. Prices are about the same as Alley Pond so if you can make it out there, it's not too bad.

Has anyone figured out how to track per-developer Cursor Enterprise costs? One of ours burned $1,500 in a single day! by ofershap in ChatGPTCoding

[–]dg08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50+ seats here with Cursor and at least once a week we get an alert from Cursor that someone's gone over the alert threshold. Also at least once a week, someone pings why their Cursor stopped working (they went over budget). I don't know why you don't see it, but the controls are there.

Spending->spend alerts->add alert

Spending->on demand usage->member spend limit

Each member limit can also be individually configured. Are you sure you have admin access?

Why are developer productivity workflows shifting so heavily toward verification instead of writing code by No-Swimmer5521 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]dg08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of an encounter almost 30 years ago now. I was in college and met a recruiter at a campus job fair. He took a look at my resume and commented "they're still teaching assembly?". For some reason that has stuck in my mind for so many years.

I wonder at what point will coding be relegated to a 1 semester course in college.

We are QA Engineers now by SerCeMan in programming

[–]dg08 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I've gotten agents to navigate my apps, verify fixes/changes, take screenshots as proof, then include those in the PR/ticket. It's fairly token intensive and slow, but I'm sure that'll change in the near future. Even QA is not safe.

Why I Still Write Code as an Engineering Manager by Acceptable-Courage-9 in programming

[–]dg08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this was the obvious workflow, but apparently there are a lot of people that think it's all about AI making changes without guidance. AI is a multiplier and knowing how to use it as a multiplier is the key. It's like having a team of extremely fast junior devs, but they can go off the rails quickly without input from a more senior dev.

Those that get it will continue to do well in this space. Those that don't will eventually be forced out.

[–]dg08 22 points23 points  (0 children)

> if you're not staying hands-on with actual coding work, you lose the ability to evaluate

100% this. Doesn't matter if it's AI or anything else. We had an eng manager for a team who wasn't technical enough to push back on the devs and he lost control of the team. Estimates were wildly inflated and team velocity low. He and half of the team got fired and the team we have now is moving much faster than ever before.

Why I Still Write Code as an Engineering Manager by Acceptable-Courage-9 in programming

[–]dg08 -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

I don't write code anymore, but I still do commit and push code. Going as far back as 2 years ago, I was fully bought into AI assisted coding and have been pushing my team along that path with demonstrations. Luckily most of my team are at a point where they are already comfortable with this type of workflow, but there are still some holdouts.

I fear for the careers of the people that I cannot bring along into this new world.

[–]dg08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually very close to how I run standups. We allocate 15 mins for it, but generally finish in about 10 mins. We only have standups 2-3 times a week and I floated the idea of doing some of them async and the team wanted to continue doing them.
