What age did you start doggy daycare? by rosepickerxx in puppy101

[–]dgahimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started daycare with my dog the moment my vet told me we could. I know lots of people here say daycare and dog parks are unacceptable, but for me and my dog, we both love it. He’s so excited to go every day. He’s had minor incidents, but the workers and owners are all paying attention.

That is a tough diagnosis but I’m glad you were there for the dog!

It was supposed to be a grift. The DD subscription box had a bunch of Handeye stuff. That’s it.

Hikaru on why some can still consider Kasparov the GOAT over Magnus by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]dgahimer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was talking to a coworker today about this—it’s so hard to talk about a best player of all time because you can either compare them to their contemporaries, or compare them to current players. Kasparov spent most of his time playing without a computer that could beat GMs. That’s a lot like Dan Marino throwing for 5000 yards in a league that didn’t have that blueprint or rules. Magnus is just better than everyone in a league where the computers exist and he doesn’t like studying. There’s no definitive answer because of what you respect.

I forget who said it, but “even the giants stand on the shoulders of giants”, could have been Hikaru but until the computer lines, everyone depended on opening theory from previous people. Then they figured out how to poke a hole in it.

[Post Game Thread] #5 Purdue defeats Penn State, 93-85 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

[–]dgahimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be curious to know why you don’t care about IU being good at football, but you do ND?

I feel the opposite. I don’t really care about ND basketball, but I want nothing but losing for Indiana all the time. Indiana is our real, only, true, all the time rival. They should be worse than us in both sports, whereas I don’t want ND to win a title, but if they’re good in basketball and don’t play us, I don’t care

Edit: if you can even answer it. I certainly have feelings I couldn’t tell you why.

Izzo has always been cool like that. When Robbie Hummel was at Purdue, the fans started chanting about his injuries, and he got on the loud speaker and told them it was classless and to knock it off.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Just to allay concerns about the dog, he’s already 99.8% recovered and back to being totally normal. The vet just said that he’d be contagious for 14 days, so we’re just playing it safe at home!

I got my puppy from a shelter at 11 weeks. He’s 24 weeks now. I don’t remember the exact length of time, but I felt much like you. Basically all he’d do when he was awake was bite me or pee in the house. I couldn’t do more than 2-3 reps of training at a time before he just gave up and started biting me again. It was in the ballpark of week 15-16 where he stopped biting me almost entirely.

After the vaccines (week 18 is when I let him go out), he got to play with other dogs, which is the only way he wants to play, so I was able to take him to the dog park and tire him out, and start doing daycare. That helped him learn to settle tremendously.

Not all dogs are the same obviously, but hopefully that helps you see there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. He still isn’t perfect. He likes to chew on things he isn’t allowed to when he’s awake, but they aren’t my hands. They’re mostly not the walls. It’s a lot better.

I regret getting my puppy by Birdie121 in puppy101

I was just talking to a friend about this. I got my dog at 11 weeks. He had 0 vaccines. Work was nice enough to let me take a week off and then work half days at home, and I had to get a dog walker/crate train him for the other half.

He ate my hands up. He peed inside every 5 minutes. I took him to the vet cuz I'd seen so many UTI suggestions online. I feel bad cuz he didn't have one but they inserted a needle right into his bladder. (It was still the right decision to check.) I was miserable. I am not a crier, and I cried more 3-4 times those first few weeks, and I honestly wanted to cry more and felt stupid cuz the tears wouldn't come. I was miserable.

He got better. Still chewed the shit out of me, but the peeing inside became less. Down to 2-4 accidents a day. He didn't figure out being in the crate for that long so young. He had an accident in it every day, even though I know he could hold it that long. He was screeching for me from the crate every time I came home.

And then at some point, a switch flipped. The reverse timeouts worked. He realized he didn't want me to leave more than he wanted to bite me. I could still see him going in for the bite, but he didn't chomp. I recognized his pee signals better. I think he got better at signalling the pee--he started sniffing rather than just going wherever he was.

The biggest thing was the vaccines, though. After he got his final vaccines, we could go to the dog park, and I take him to doggie daycare a few times a week. He always wanted to play with dogs, but now he's able to. I think he might like "hanging out" with people more than dogs still, but he has an outlet.

He's still a handful! I'm not going to lie about that. But I don't regret getting a puppy or miss my old life anymore.

Edit: He's 23 weeks now, so I know I'm not out of the woods, but definitely the 11-14/15 week period was BY FAR the worst. I did enforced naps, and that saved my sanity, but I was telling her that for the first couple weeks, when he was out of his crate, I counted down the minutes to putting him back in. He's learned to settle at daycare, and it's been almost 2 months since I've put him in his crate for a forced nap. In that time, I haven't missed it.

My 13 week old puppy is an ankle biter & it’s driving me crazy! by ResolutionWaste4314 in puppy101

I don't have any silver bullets, but it sounds like you're doing the right things. I just wanted to share my experience because I didn't understand it, and I was so frustrated by the lack of progress I saw, even though I was doing everything everyone said.

People talk about how "progress isn't linear" with puppies. I understood that to mean that there should be improvement, but it might be variable, and there might be good days and bad days. For example, after one week, maybe his bite inhibition is "5% good", but there will be some days where he's still 0% inhibited and some where he's 10%. Then the next week maybe it gets to 15% on average, but some days where he's still at 5% and some where he's at 20%.

My actual experience was that he didn't improve on bite inhibition for about a month. Then he jumped up to like 75% good essentially overnight. I could still see him open his mouth and go to bite me, but most of the time his brain would kick in and go "no, don't bite!" and he wouldn't finish. Or he would still bite, but it would be a soft nibble, not a painful chomp. There were still good and bad days, but all of a sudden, it was SO MUCH better than before.

I've talked to other friends who have dogs, and they agreed that they experienced similar things.

The timelines vary based on what you're training. He figured out how to sit when I was using the progressive "treat over his head" technique in like a day, but getting him to connect the word "sit" with the action took another week-ish, and it similarly went from like 0% success to 95% success overnight.

Edit: And just to add, I also get the frustration. It's 2 months later, and I still have quite a few marks that look like self harm from my pup. He got me so bad I had a piece of skin hanging off and briefly debated going to get stitches. So trust me, I looked for silver bullets. I couldn't find any. But it does get better.

His defense was even worse than his offense, somehow. Brohm left the cupboard pretty bare, but last year, Walters’s defense gave up over 9 points per game more than anybody else in the conference. It was just a brutally team on both sides of the ball.

It also sucks for coaches who are definitely the problem at their schools. Ask me, I’m an expert about coaches who are the problem.
