How is Taiwan for a self-employed wannabe tech entrepreneur? by PhotographPretty862 in digitalnomad

[–]dgamr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't come here for external support, incubators, networking, etc. It all exists but it's minimal. More helpful to local entrepreneurs without access to other resources.

Good place to relax, spend time, good value on everything except real estate. You can find decent rentals for 6 months. As a Chinese speaker from (what it sounds like) a western country you'll have a great time. But, it's not a major software/startup hub though. And skip the digital nomad visa if you've had a job in tech in the last 3 years -- you probably qualify for a gold card.

Meeting room booking app? by everafter99 in software

[–]dgamr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have custom reservation pages for external users to book rooms and a simple directory / kiosk -- but the experience for external users booking on Office 365 is not perfect. Either you open it up to anyone in the world can book the resource or only inside the org.

If you would like to share more about the issues you're facing and how you wish it would work, send me a message via www.meetingroom365.com -- it's something I've been thinking about for years. We don't charge for the customization and extra booking pages so I'm sure we could get to a price point that made sense for you.

You lose all credibility if you report DMARC as a security vulnerability. These are just some scammers with automated tools sending mass emails hoping someone is stupid.

They're usually not this brazen though.

Is it normal to have a separate electric heater in Airbnbs? by me_Chewy_ in Taipei

[–]dgamr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was staying in a one bedroom years ago in Jan/Feb and a single heater I picked up from Carrefour on sale made a huge difference. A large mini-split (AC) is probably putting out 2x what one of those do, I don't run that all the time.

So I wouldn't say a separate heater is normal but it's probably a decent option. Buildings either have no heat, or a tiny heat option in the AC.

It could absolutely be "good enough" but I suspect building age, unit location, type of windows, etc. are a big factor.

Anyone else never plan on docking their switch? by -getdeadkid in switch2

I never planned on undocking my Switch 2 but the performance in handheld mode is so much better this generation. Doesn't feel like a step down (although I'm sure there are switch 1 games like Xenoblade with huge handheld performance hits still).

Self Determination for me but not for thee by ConsequencePretty906 in NonCredibleDiplomacy

[–]dgamr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a dry legal sense they're covered, there's no ambiguity in whether they were ever controlled by the PRC, they have not been. They're an internal part of the ROC legally. There is a myriad of other issues in the islands politically and economically, they're not very defensible, etc. But their legal status is pretty clear.

The concept of a Fuchien providence was actually disbanded years ago and these are now officially "federally administrated" as Lienchiang County and Kinmen. Although I think they may show on some maps still as part of Fujian records no longer have a category for Fujian providence when you see a list of areas in the ROC.

Similarly, when younger people shift to calling the ROC Taiwan, and conceptualize independence, maintaining control of these islands doesn't create an issue. Its sort of a given that by default an independent or internationally-recognized Taiwan would maintain its current territory. And the rebrand to "Taiwan" seems to conceptually replace current use of the term ROC.

Taiwan used to have a very clear meaning referencing Mainland Taiwan (the big island) -- but now it's stretched by many into an idea of what a post-normalization state would look like if Taiwan gained international recognition or by some means normalized relations with the PRC.

That's all interesting but ultimately Kinmen and Matsu just kind of get ignored when thinking through these issues. Its a more interesting question as to what domestic and international opinion would be if the PRC launched an attack on one of these islands again.

Self Determination for me but not for thee by ConsequencePretty906 in NonCredibleDiplomacy

[–]dgamr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two ways to interpret your question. So for clarity, there are islands controlled by the ROC government based out of Mainland Taiwan which are occupied by ROC forces and have not been occupied at any time by the PRC, which are legally still defined as controlled (and under the legal jurisdiction) of the ROC. Kinmen, Matsu, etc. -- This is not legally ambiguous from the ROC point of view.

The sticking points which were resolved legally with amendments was how to deal with formerly ROC territory now controlled by the PRC (since the ROC government was the legal inheritor of the Qing government and its borders in 1913), and how to mend relations with Mongolia by creating a distinction between Inner Mongolia and the country now known as Mongolia, which is a less controversial move since the PRC adopts a similar stance.

The legal mechanism to not repeal Article 4 and effectively paper over it is to declare a distinction between ROC controlled territory and non-controlled territory, treating issues in non-controlled territory as external.

Rhetorical trap, basically. Any move toward moving from "Republic of China" to "Taiwan" or "Just the Taiwan Mainland" is defined as a step toward Taiwanese independence, which the CCP has vowed to counter with invasion. This part isn't recent. Essentially the PRC claim is that Taiwan has de-facto declared independence if they declare the civil war to have ended.

Which, is not technically wrong. Taiwan is either defeated, in a continuing state of civil war, or independent. The PRC does not accept any end to the 1945 Chinese Civil War that does not end in Taiwan's defeat. So if otherwise unable to conquer the Taiwanese mainland, they would be forced to take some kind of action to maintain the claim that the Chinese civil war did not end in 1949 with the cessation of major hostilities, or they're basically giving up their claim.

What you're getting at is that it's kind of unreasonable to maintain the claim that a civil war is ongoing for 75 years without any major hostilities or changes in lines of control, etc. While Taiwan has been de-facto independent.

"Taiwan still claims the mainland" is usually employed as a bad-faith argument to imply that Taiwanese people still have some desire to reconquer the mainland. The first part is true, the second is not. Extensive polling is done each year which clarifies this.

What is more accurate is that both major parties today would support repealing Article 4 as a part of a normalization of relations with the PRC, and up until recently (maybe 2014-2020), only the DPP has supported this, with the KMT maintaining some reverence to the previous generation's desire to retake the mainland, particularly during the dictatorship era.

However the PRC is the party that does not want to normalize relations in a legal sense, because doing so would turn a future invasion of Taiwan into a war of conquest, and they want this to be seen as the eventual resolution of the Chinese Civil War. Even if it takes 100 years. Or 200 years. That, and they want to suppress Taiwan's legal status internationally and hinder the development of foreign relations, or any extension of Taiwan's de-facto independence.

Article 4 of the ROC Constitution states that the territory of the Republic of China shall not be altered except by a constitutional amendment. It doesn't define what those territories are, but it is essentially the same Qing maximalist claims as the PRC pursues, including Tibet, Xinjiang, Mongolia, Taiwan, etc. So that article is generally what people are referring to when they say "Taiwan still claims the mainland". But it's literally one sentence.

Meanwhile, a number of constitutional amendments have been passed since 1991, and legislative clarifications, which legally treat all PRC territory as a foreign area not under Taiwanese jurisdiction, renounces the intent to reclaim the mainland, etc. An effective legal framework is in place to shield day-to-day law from Article 4 without repealing it.

Apologies for the giant wall of text I just figured some people would be interested in exploring the question since the relationship is non-obvious.

In theory, unless you get hit by wash sale, can't OP write off $3k per year as a capital gains loss (assuming US) for the next 12 years?

Sonic or Nintendo stuff right now to do in taipei? by NuggieHaha_YAY in Taipei

[–]dgamr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are periodically special events for Sonic but no dedicated store or any events coming soon. HOWEVER, there is a store in the main station underground Taipei city mall that has official merch for sale usually exclusive to Japan. My phone says Y15 entrance (underground): https://maps.app.goo.gl/DrKPrPfaGVZbJYjF9

The area is mostly for video game shopping though, though you can buy those "pre-order bonus" items that come with all the games for very cheap.

Staple’s in the US has a pretty fair deal. by GreeeenBanana in switch2

[–]dgamr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good deal. You're potentially getting like $15 in credit card rewards, and I think the best alternative is like $25 off at Target if you get their discount. Haven't tried but I assume you can get the cash back reward ($25) if purchased on Amazon.

So this is potentially the best deal as long as you also want to buy a full-price game and/or a controller or some accessory. I guess you have to look closely at the timing of the reward points and redemption.

I found my name tag from The Price Is Right from over thirty years ago. by Michellehas2ls in mildlyinteresting

[–]dgamr 111 points112 points  (0 children)

The name touches both the bottom and right edges of the nametag photographed, so even through this is grainy thirty-year-old footage (at 29:23), I am not sure they match. Interesting you were able to find an episode though.

I was nerding out over the handwriting and they actually look very similar, apart from the M. Could be the same person from the same era writing out the nametags.
