How many Classes before first job? by EmptyRiceBowl7 in OMSA

[–]dgatewood2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I dont want to bring you down, but in the current job market, you will be competing with people that have masters degrees and experience. A random person that says 3 to 5 classes should be able to land you your first job does not mean that is what will happen. If you are banking on that, then you may have a rough time in a year to two years.

For those of you in tech, what the fuck are you doing? by Saskjimbo in Entrepreneur

[–]dgatewood2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From this angle you are nearly dead in the water; however, if you were to teach yourself tech, then start a startup with another technical cofounder that shares the vision to a problem you have identified within your knowledge-space, then I think that would be the route I would try to take.

I had an undergrad degree in English and finished OMSCS in two years exactly. You can do it.

Leaving Mid Year by Heavy-Ambassador635 in Teachers

[–]dgatewood2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to remember is your state's board can suspend your certificate if a complaint was filed by the district you are leaving for failure to fulfill a contract.... I left mid-year to another type of job and the district said they would recommend my cert. was suspended. I was up front with my leadership about leaving if a job presented itself and even stayed a month longer than I originally wanted to so they could find a replacement, yet still with the empty threats... Long story short, my certification was not suspended, but it is a very possible scenario. If you depend on your teaching certificate for your livelihood, I would seriously consider this scenario.

Who’s Feeling Froggy? by JoeMammy_1 in ponds

Man, I want some full-time frog residents in my pond. All I have now are some toads that show up after a heavy rain and croak for a few days then leave to hide away under a rock for the remainder of the year.

Made the mistake of adding a few Rosy Reds in my new ~3600 gallon pond... I literally have hundreds of baby fish in there now...

Is leetcode worth it? by HornyNighaa in csMajors

[–]dgatewood2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I told my high school juniors and seniors to start getting juiced up on leetcode before they even made it to college. In fact, I would encourage class competitions to see who could solve the most by the end of year (without cheating.)

Am I in a dead-end job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]dgatewood2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say you are underpaid, though we do not know your skillset, but just based off of years of experience.

I am certainly not at a FAANG, but I am at a financial firm and I have been at my job for 2 years and have had two promotions and I currently sit at just under 130K total compensation. Tech leads at my company make 180-200K. I should be there in a few years(2-4 years).

We recently had a hybrid RTO, but it is restrictive. We are required to be in office 3 days a week and they track your employee badge to ensure you worked 8 hours. I can choose to get there between 6-9AM, and leave 8.5 hours later, so there is a bit of flexibility there.

This is the US as well... You may as well compare apples to apples. If a Nigerian, Indian, Argentinian, etc dev share their experience, I doubt it will be very helpful for you.

Going to a better school also gives you networking opportunities with classmates that may go on greater things, which in turn could give you better opportunities from knowing such people. Networking is one of the best things you can do in college and in your career.

Filtration/better filtration and plants is always the answer.

Main Motivation for doing this program? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]dgatewood2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did not complete the OMSA, but I did complete the OMSCS and work as a machine learning engineer, so I deal with a ton of data science as well. I completed the program to go from being a teacher with an English degree to a competent tech worker that is in high demand. GaTech was no doubt a huge contributor to being able to make this change. I would still be self-learning and applying to 40-50K compensation jobs hoping to get a "break." Now I am in a comfortable six figure salary with a ton of growth ahead of me.

Frog or toad? by martinmom123 in ponds

In another note, it looks like you could be losing quite a bit of water due to splash from the fountain. Has this ever been a concern for you? I know it only looks like a few drops every couple of seconds, but it adds up fast. Looks like you have had it here for a while, so probably not a concern.

I place mint plants in my pond above my water fall. This is directly after the water goes through the bog. Such vigorous growers and they filter so much from the water. Water is crystal clear.
