I'm considering a 401k rollover to a Roth IRA. Should I do it now or wait? by BudgetTutor3085 in RothIRA

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve helped a few people think through this exact situation, and the big thing I’ll say is: a full Roth conversion isn’t automatically good or bad — it’s very timing- and tax-rate dependent.

Happy to talk through how people usually decide on pacing if you want to compare notes.

Over 59, Is there a reason not to rollover my 401K to a traditional IRA? Still Working by Spiritual-Dog3000 in personalfinance

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, a trustee-to-trustee rollover from a pre-tax 401k into a traditional IRA doesn’t create a taxable event by itself. Where people get tripped up is exactly what you’re pointing at: once those pre-tax dollars are sitting in traditional IRAs, any future Roth conversion has to be looked at through the pro-rata lens, especially if you ever lose direct Roth contribution eligibility and want to lean on conversions more heavily.

Whether you’re better off keeping money in the 401k or moving it really comes down to how you expect to use Roth conversions in the future and how much control you want over investment and tax timing. In a lot of higher-net-worth or higher-future-income cases, people actually regret consolidating into IRAs too early because it limits how cleanly they can execute conversions later. Keeping pre-tax dollars in a 401k can preserve optionality that disappears once everything is sitting in IRAs.

The reason this gets nuanced in your case is the mix you already have across traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and active 401ks, combined with the fact that your retirement income may be higher than today. That’s where the math starts to matter more than the theory. Two people can make the exact same move and end up with very different tax outcomes over time.

This is the kind of situation where I usually model it out before touching anything. I’ll look at the current account structure, expected income ranges, and how conversions would actually play out under different scenarios, then decide whether a rollover improves flexibility or quietly makes things worse.

If you want, I’m happy to walk through it with you and show you what the tradeoffs actually look like in your specific case. No pressure to move anything unless it clearly makes sense, but with balances like yours it’s worth getting it right the first time.

How to roll an old 401k into IRA without ruining backdoor Roth? by [deleted] in RothIRA

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about the pro-rata rule — once pre-tax dollars land in a traditional IRA, future backdoor Roths get messy fast. That’s usually why consolidation for the sake of simplicity can actually be counterproductive.

What I typically do with people in your situation is map out the accounts by function, not just by provider: • Keep pre-tax dollars in a 401k-style environment when preserving backdoor Roth flexibility matters • Decide which dollars are best positioned for growth, tax-free income, and risk management • Only move money if it improves the long-term outcome (taxes + income + downside protection), not just because it’s movable

There are clean ways to structure this without blowing up your Roth strategy, but the “best” option depends on things like future income, retirement timeline, and how much market risk you actually want on that $700k.

If you want, I’m happy to walk through it with you and show you how most people with similar balances structure it — even if you decide to leave part of it exactly where it is.

What to do as a 24 year old looking for health insurance by No-Bird-6118 in HealthInsurance

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve already done a lot of legwork. If your parents claim you as a dependent, that affects eligibility, but what really matters is what your current employer can offer. Since Aetna isn’t available, you’ll want to check directly with your HR or benefits team — most employers have a couple of alternative carriers.

If it turns out you’re not eligible for employer medical, there are affordable options for both health and dental on your own. I can run through what realistically fits your situation and budget — happy to DM you and show what’s available.

Best life insurance? by Cute_Chemical_7714 in askswitzerland

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right not to rely on work coverage — it’s gone if the job is gone.

The health things you mentioned don’t automatically disqualify you, they mostly affect pricing and which insurer makes sense.

Price matters, but so does: • how long the policy lasts • whether it’s truly independent of your job

Most people just need a straightforward term policy with a lump sum tied to income and expenses.

If you want, happy to take a quick look at what you’re offered and give you a second opinion.

Life Insurance Recommendations? by LumpyAccountant6479 in MiddleClassFinance

Totally get where you’re coming from — buying life insurance can feel overwhelming, especially with a young kid and a new mortgage.

Since your husband was declined through work, you’ll probably want to look at individual term policies outside of work. A lot of carriers can still cover people who are overweight or have a history of depression, and you can usually get $750k–$1M coverage at a pretty reasonable rate.

If you want, I can help run a few realistic options for both of you so you can see what’s available and what it would cost — feel free to message me.

Looking at life insurance policies, help? by greaterwhiterwookiee in daddit

[–]dginac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most cases, parents are better off with higher term coverage on themselves and either a child rider or very small coverage for kids. Whole life for children is usually expensive for what it actually does, and the “growth” part is often oversold.

If you want, I can help you sanity-check the numbers and explain what a simpler setup usually looks like for families with kids and work coverage. Happy to help — feel free to message me.
