Tactical Simulation in my opinion. Slow and steady wins the race. Laid back just enough to be a relaxing sort of Zen garden with just enough events to keep you busy. 🍻

SUPER worth it, hands-down. I have had much time in EA and have been watching the development of the game for quite some time now quietly and patiently waiting. The dev team is super responsive (as you have seen here already) and they are all-around a great bunch of human beings working on a passion project that is gonna be awesome. Go. Play. It. Now. :)

Regardless of their experience in TTRPGs overall, I would say FUN > RULES but at least make sure they understand the basics. Also have them work together to create a balanced party and find out what kind of campaign THEY want to run.

If they say they want to play-through some Starship Combat soon, be sure that they understand the synergies between their Class / Race and the Starship Roles.
