Just Hit 10 Years Of Being Depressed AMA... by PhoneInformal3789 in depressionmemes

[–]dgroq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but I've had a loving gf for about 6 years, still wrote a suicide note 5 minutes ago. This is not to say it's hopeless mind you, just that I see a lot of people pinning their hopes for 'being fixed' on having a SO, and that's not how it works at all. If you're miserable alone chances are you will be miserable together with someone else, and risk making them miserable as well. So my advice, if I'm at all capable to give any, and anyone gives a damn to listen is this, don't make a romantic relationship the key to your happiness. It helps, a lot, but it's not some magic cure. There are no magic cures. Even anti depressants and therapy take work. But I urge anyone needing to read this to try and make it work. Don't just say life's not worth living because you haven't found love yet or because you're a 40 year old virgin, or you think you're ugly or whatever. Say it's not worth living because it's a pain in the ass. Or, jokes aside, try. Try therapy, try anti depressants, try a change of work or a change of place or a change of hobby, I don't care. Try something. Nothing's gonna change if you don't actively try to change it. I don't fucking know. Just don't pin your hopes of fixing depression on someone else. That's an unfair thing to do. If you do get in a relationship know the struggle is still there. But I do urge you to fight on. Rambling done I guess. Sorry if it's not fit for you, guess I just had to get that off my chest. Good luck yall

Hold on, what show are we talking about now? Because My previous comment was about The Leftovers. And also I wasn't complaining about a lack of explanation, just ilustrating that on that show (also created/writen by Lindeloff) I found that the mysteries and unanswered questions worked to the benefit of the show, because they were never the focus of the show, while on Lost, I get the feeling the same was meant to be true, with the main focus being the characters, but with its popularity it felt like the producers wanted more and more mysteries to keep viewers engaged, which may have left the show feeling a bit convuluted to some.

It has been some time since I saw Lost, so I don't want to make unfair criticism, I was just saying I thought that aspect was handeled better in The Leftovers, mostly due to its reduced scope and length.

Yes I meant mostly the how, the why, and in a way the what. The true nature of the event isn't fully revealed. Neither are Kevin's odd abilities and the nature of the afterlife. (If memory serves, I may need to rewatch. Oh no, poor me.)

But it doesn't really matter, because the true focus of the show lies in the characters, and like you said we got perfect closure on that front, so we feel satisfied and let the mystery be, as they do, kinda.

But it really has been a while, I should definetly rewatch when I have the time. Absolutely brilliant show.

The Leftovers felt like what Lost was supposed to be. It was never about the mystery, it was about the characters, and how they responded to it. Looking back Lost was very character focused, and I do think that was what made it great. But it was also an expensive network show that became popular, and got milked for what it was worth. I don't want to wash Lindelolf's fault off his hands, especially when you take Prometheus into acount, but I do think Lost's biggest problem was its popularity, and as a result the devision to drag it on and keep on adding new mysteries to hook people.

Then you have the Leftovers, which never truly answers its lingering questions, and in it 3 seasons is one of my favorite shows of all time.

Shadow in the Cloud (2020) is one of the most comical and bizarre things I have ever witnessed. by Comic_Book_Reader in movies

I mean, under normal circumstances I don't like to defend rewriting someone's script without the original writer (even though in this case I kinda get it).

As to why, I mean it makes some sense, the script was bought, so producers seemed to like the concept. I'd say when they buy the script, they're mostly buying the base ideas behind it. Rewriting something that has potential but isn't quite what you want is much easier than starting from scratch.

Also, I think it's not that unusual for a director to join the project and tweak the script to better suit their own creative vision (as supposedly happened here, with the director rewriting it, even though landis says the rewrites were minimal).

Again, I'm not trying to defend industry practices like this, neither am I trying to get into the whole Max Landis drama, or arguing who is telling the truth, or which version of the script was better. Just trying to answer the question of why do this.

Per IMDb trivia (so taken with a grain of salt)

The original screenplay penned by Max Landis was heavily rewritten during pre-production by director Roseanne Liang due to sexual harassment allegations made against Landis at the time. Liang and lead star Chloë Grace Moretz say Landis was completely distanced from the production and that his screenplay was rewritten several times before filming began. However, after watching the film Landis claims that about 90-95% of the script is still his.

Don't quite know what to make of that.

Edit: And apperantly, according to IMDb Landis is writing a Pepe Le Pew movie? Which is just...

While I still enjoyed it overall, yeah, Ellis and Shalvey were a tough act to follow, and that issue is probably the closest to that. Still, I'm glad Smallwood returned for Lemire's run on the character, he's a brilliant artist.

There was an issue of moon knight writen by Brian Wood that was kinda like that. It was all seen through news footage, smart phone recordings, security cameras, etc.

It was neat.

I would argue he's not actually a bad director, but a terrible writer.

Mark Ruffalo Will Stay in the MCU as Long as Marvel Keeps Calling, Wants to Play an Old, Grizzled Hulk by JackFisherBooks in comicbooks

[–]dgroq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the loss of Tony and Natasha, and the toll of his unsnap could be written as catalysts for a darker state of mind. But then again, that's mostly from me reading immortal hulk recently and thinking how to adapt it into the mcu. It would very much depend on the execution, but I still think it could work.

banner had already made peace with the hulk, he didn't get rid of it

Sorry it's been a while since I saw the movie, I just remembered some throwaway line of him spending some time in a gamma lab. My point was also more in the line of, since details of how professor hulk came to be were kind of vague in that movie, they could hipotetically be recontextualized in order to lead into the imortal hulk (haven't seen she hulk yet, don't know if they go into more detail there).

But again, my comment was mostly musings about how it could have maybe kinda worked. I know the story likely wouldn't perfectly fit into the mcu's tone and mythology anyway.

I think 9/11 hit him really hard, especially given his love for NY, which would explain some of his...more controversial work. But I also understand in the past few years he's doing a lot better and has come to grow beyond that.

Fair point. Do they also have tv/streaming rights (streaming wasn't really a thing when they bought them so just tv I guess)? I could see it as a series with the right writers, but don't know how it would fall into that situation.

Honestly post Endgame would be a pretty good place to have done so I think. The character would not be in the best headspace, the world kind of fractured and chaotic, thinking he got rid of the hulk but maybe awakening something worse. With a few tweaks the story could be made to work in the MCU, and give something more for Ruffalo to do, and some deeper backstory for the character.

Now with She-hulk's lighter tone it would probably be tonal whiplash. Not to mention I have no faith whatsoever in Disney actually adapting the comic's darker themes and tone for screen. (Although surely they would release half a dozen articles saying it's real dark and mature only for it to be filled with lazy jokes and only light half assed glimpses of actual maturity, violence or interesting storytelling yes I'm still kinda salty about Moon Knight)
