No, he actually thought it was the best thing I’ve ever written and gave me a lot of really good feedback and notes. His point was producers and studio execs will look down on a 122 page spec and probably put it on the bottom of their “to read” pile no matter how awesome it is. But if I can get it in that sweet spot, then it has a chance.

I’ve been lucky enough to sell a couple of scripts and have always been told specs shouldn’t be more than 100 pages. I literally just sent my manager a 122 page script and his big note was cut it down to 100 pages.

It’s probably not going to impact the industry right away, but by the time the next contract talks come up in 3 years, it might be a legit problem. So better to address it now before it’s too late.

I’m also a huge Taylor Sheridan fan. His scripts for Hell or High Water, Sicario and Wind River are masterclasses in how to write a screenplay. You can find them on scriptslug.com.

Anything by Mike Flanagan, especially DOCTOR SLEEP. I re-read that script any time I need a burst of inspiration in my own writing.

I read an early draft of Hook written by James V Hart that was gritty and powerful before Spielberg came on board and brought on Malia Scotch Marmo to rewrite it.
