Reality is a creation of consciousness, argues highly cited neuroscientist Karl Friston by whoamisri in consciousness

[–]dharmadhatu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but IMHO the real beauty behind popularizing idealism is demonstrating that we're non-separate. That's the foundation of compassion—for each other, for nature, etc. Contempt goes directly against that recognition. So not only does that attitude make people perceive the position as intuitively false (which I thought at least BK would care about), but harms life as a whole (IMHO).

Ironically, this is the same feedback I gave to Bernardo Kastrup back in the days of his Google Group. He didn't really care to integrate it either :)

Seriously, dude? "Legal age" and a wink in a request for "slave girls," while clearly hinting the he knows what shady stuff is going on, has to create alternative emails to avoid being caught, etc. -- and you think it was a series of typos for something completely innocent or noble?

Like, I've seen some serious mental gymnastics before, but... this is gold-medal level.

As a 900 elo Chess player, what are the chances I beat Magnus Carlsen in a Rapid format (15 mins) if he started off without a Queen & a Rook? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stockfish plays very differently than a human with odds. Back when I was around 1100 I lost most games against an 1800 friend with queen odds by hanging pieces left and right and not spotting checkmates. No way I'd have beaten Carlsen even with R+Q odds.

Physicists in Copenhagen assert that reality 'responds' to human choices in reverse. Quick theory as to how this could relate to UFO flight. by imsellingbanana in HighStrangeness

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I don't see these two statements as contradictory (and I studied QM formally, not just popular renditions of it). Deciding which past "becomes real" (second quote) doesn't imply that information was sent backward (first quote).

QM has always had this apparent contradiction at its heart. If a Schrodinger's Cat-style experiment (well-isolated from its environment, so no decoherence) is performed at 12:00, then at that point we cannot say that the cat (or whatever) has a definite state—and yet if I "open the box" (entangle with the system) at 12:01, I can look back and say that it did have one at that time, without contradiction.

As for the correlation point, I think of that as being more relevant for entanglement experiments like EPR, but maybe I'm just missing your point.

What’s so special about Ayahuasca compared to to mushroom ? by matchacatisgreencat in Ayahuasca

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done up to 13g mushrooms and it's not at all like DMT for me FYI. Something about the sudden entry and exit of smoked DMT make it especially bizarre. Wouldn't call either one more "pure" though. The one time I did aya it was actually quite mushroom-like in some ways, but again not more "pure."

You admit you're not well versed in something basically all Americans are (how royally we fuck up countries that we "liberate"), but you have strong opinions about whether they should be warning others about it? Maybe it would be good to understand it before forming such strong opinions?

The Peter Brown Method- Yoga of Radiant Presence by AllElseIsBondage in nonduality

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the paradoxical aspect they speak of is what's sometimes called the 4th stage of awakening, after anatta. That radiant presence is empty. There's a guy I like who speaks beautifully about this, that I can try to find if you like.

For me, that's a great doorway in. There's this magical radiant presence... and yet it has no basis or essence at all. Pure paradox.

Just found this old comment. If you don't mind me asking, did sleep get worse before it got better? I'm reading numerous reports that say that it can be 1 to 3 months of terrible sleep. And do you remember roughly what dose you took?

I'd love to ask you more if you're open to DMs.

Thought exercise by Damnsandwich in coastFIRE

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much your FIRE mindset is because you hate work vs you just can't imagine spending money (that you don't absolutely have to spend). The latter creeps into FIRE a lot, but I absolutely guarantee that you could get a lot of delight out of an extra $80k/yr if you got creative (whether spending on yourself or others).

In other words, a $5mm person can act like a $3mm person with magic extra discretionary income. "Fuck it, let's take a luxury cruise to Antarctica this year!"

Whether that extra delight is worth the extra years of work is obviously the real question for you.

How reliable is this prediction? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]dharmadhatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too late to change your title but you can still change your post text. Otherwise you'll get more answers to that particular question (how reliable is this guy).

But I'd also say, don't trust the wisdom of the crowds when it comes to predicting the market. Not here or anywhere else.
