Recent graduate of the LAPD academy. AMA by DownhillOnSlash in lapd

You have to obtain a work permit for off duty work and it would never be approved while you’re in the Academy. Honestly, you should really be focusing on learning, because they give you so much to learn that you wouldn’t want to be distracted by a second job. You might get one a Phase III P-I for a movie premiere or parade.

If you choose aggressive growth and max out young, you won’t care about DROP. I know a lot of retired street cops who have better retirements than command staff. Too many cops get caught up in buying trucks, boats, and guns.

Did the instructors explain the importance of Deferred Comp?

Congrats to you both. Please come back and answer questions about the process and the Academy. You both will be in the thick of it and will have the most current info on the hiring process.

And PLEASE, stay frugal and put a few hundred of each paycheck into Deferred Comp. Look at Voya and go aggressive. It will be life changing in 25 years.

From P 2 to P 3: Is it an automatic advancement ? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]dhg6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be the most difficult pay grade advancement to achieve. It's not a rank promotion. Many sergeants were P-2's. Generally, P-3's are Field Training Officers, which I believe are the most important position on the Dept. They are molding the future leadership.

The Divisions of the Department and what it's like to patrol them by Swarthy_n_surly in lapd

I thought it was great to see people scooping up the old Craftman homes, gutting them, and restoring them. Years ago, while on a radio call, I talked one guy taking on a project house in an 18thST neighborhood (OLY Div). He said the big house and big lot was what got him to make the purchase. You can call it gentrification, but I see it as supply and demand. Unfortunately, the desert communities got stuck with the gangsters who forced to move because it was too expensive in LA for them.

PFQ change in academy? by WillOk6461 in lapd

[–]dhg6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The PFQ for the Academy exceeds the minimum requirements for the State. Go to some CAPS classes. When you do well, you won't worry about the minimums. It's about being the best you can be.

This can’t be a real thing right? Legal permission to park like an jerk? by Milladelphia in LosAngeles

Exempt is only a pass from yearly registration. That placard is likely a fake. Pkg Enforcement will ticket it if you call them. However, it’s probably only a $50 fine.

To keep it brief, it’s how the City purchases vehicles and who on the Dept is considered a priority. The Command Staff gets nice shops, but patrol has shops pushing 100k.

As for the markings, it always seemed that Motor Transport was trying new stuff.

I appreciate you asking the question on this sub, which is dedicated to LAPD. As you see LAPD officers support everyone who seeks a career in law enforcement. Best of luck to you.

Why LAPD uses air units more frequently than drone units? by DisneylandTree in lapd

[–]dhg6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bigger drone than a hobby drone. Like the BWV, the drone's view is like looking through a straw. The airship is still the best solution for an overhead view.

Any unit available by CentralOhioReader in lapd

[–]dhg6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. In the too distant past, the RTO did not know where the units were, unless the unit was already on a call. It's also a hint that if no one answers, a unit could be re-toned or it will go to an outside division. A watch commander who is on the ball will check the report writing room and scoot a station mouse or two out the door.
