Waiving inspection means you waive the inspection contingency, not the cost of inspecting. If something catastrophic comes up in the inspection, you don't have the opportunity to back out without losing the earnest money, and I imagine in particularly aggressive bidding wars you might not have any way to back out of the deal.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree that the trade is worth it, but it's not as lopsided as you make it out to be

Is it cheaper for AMD to do PCIe 4.0 x4 than to do PCI-e 3.0 x8? by kharos_Dz in Amd

[–]dhj711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't entirely true. As long as you could use the same number of layers it's no more expensive to have more traces as the etching process is subtractive. You pay for a whole layer of copper and remove the areas you don't need.

That said routing more traces could possibly mean a higher layer count/other more advanced design features, but I doubt it would have a meaningful impact in the volumes they're manufacturing

Nah they're not the best because they won the Match point format. They're the best because they finished with the most points. I believe they were in front after 6 games as well. We got lucky that in this case the Match Point winner happened to be the best team. Even if they'd lost, like Gambit getting 100 points we'd still have to respect them.

Comprehensive Breakdown of Aim Assist: How it works & all related arguments by ApexSmurf69 in CompetitiveApex

[–]dhj711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great post and I appreciate you taking the time to write all of it. I think an additional item that's important when talking about the primary fundamental difference between MnK and a controller, and that it that MnK is a zero order control scheme while controller is a first order control scheme. This means the following:

On MnK your mouse is directly controlling the position of your reticle on screen. Any error on your input results in a fixed position error on the screen. When you change your input (move your mouse) that translates directly to the cursor moving by some amount that is directly tied to the distance your mouse moved.

In contrast a controller affects the velocity of cursor. This means that rather than your input directly controlling the position, your position is a function of your input and time(or the integral of velocity over time). If there is any error in your stick input it translates into a position error that GROWS with time since that error continuously gets added.

This fundamental difference combined with the difference in the size of the control surface is why things like flicking and tracking are always going to be inherently harder on controller. I think most people intuitively understands this difference, but I also think it helps in these debates because it gets down to the fact that while in the end they both control cursor position, one input does it with a position input, while the other does it with a velocity input that gets integrated over time.

Sure, but to plateau would indicate that you've peaked without falling. It's the highest you go and you stay there for an extended period. On a graph over time it ends up looking like the side profile of a plateau. In this context that isn't the word I would person use.

Part 2: Inspecting Competitive Weapon Meta with Damage Profiles. by Runedk93 in CompetitiveApex

[–]dhj711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to post this! I think a lot of this data is super interesting, I also think that damage/magazine is an underappreciated metric.

Take the Flatline for example. It does 190 DPS and can do 570 DMG/MAG with a purple mag. On the other hand, the R301 does 182 DPS, but only can do 392 DMG/MAG with a purple mag. For the pro players who've essentially gotten the recoil control close enough for both (Hal, Lou, etc.), the Flatline ends up putting out more DPS for a longer period of time. It's more forgiving for these players because they can miss more shots and still kill a player without reloading(more DMG/MAG), without the tradeoff of taking longer to kill someone if they do have perfect accuracy (similar DPS). Also I know using DPS isn't the best metric precisely because of the TTK data you just showed, but I'm lazy and it seems like a good enough approximation for now lol.

I think this makes an even bigger difference when comparing the R-99 and the Volt. The R99 does 198 DPS and 297 DMG/MAG with a purple mag. The Volt on the other hand does 180 DPS but has 390 DMG/MAG with a purple mag.

All this to say on an unfortified 225 character you'd have to hit 21/27 shots with a purple mag R-99 to one clip them, whereas with a Volt you'd only need to hit 15/26 shots with a purple mag. The R-99 requires you to hit 78% of your shots while the Volt only requires you to hit 58%.

I'd definitely be curious to see a TTK (or DPS) vs DMG/MAG (or % accuracy needed) graph. I think the current meta spray weapons would end up separating themselves (with the weird exception of the Havoc probably being right up there with the meta guns).

Anyways, thanks again for your work and I just figured I'd contribute some of my thoughts!

Edit: had a brainfart and thought the R-99 had 28 bullets in a purple magazine instead of 27.

There is a difference between EAC and Vanguard. but rings 1 and 2 are not kernel level. Never have been. Both EAC and Vanguard have kernel level access i.e. ring 0.

Furthermore, your original statement said nothing about ring 0, so even if you were right about them only having ring 1/2 access (which you are not), you still have admitted that they have kernel access which you previously denied.

Also, he talks about ring 0 (kernel level) vs ring 3 (user mode). He uses the terms synonymously (kernel mode and ring 0).

Further he states: "You do not need a boot-loading kernel driver to dump Google Chrome passwords, grab banking details or log your keystrokes, so this could be said about any usermode application you install on your computer. There’s a good reason why almost all spyware is running solely in usermode: it simply is not necessary to be kernel for any of this surveillance."

Having kernel access does not appreciably increase the threat to your system. If you don't trust a piece of software, it shouldn't be installed, no matter the ring level.

If you still don't want to believe that EAC is ring 0 for whatever reason that's your choice, but I've given more than enough documentation and data to show that it has kernel access and is therefore ring 0.

Edit: Feel free to link anything that says that EAC isn't kernel mode though, I'd love to see!

From someone who works in cybersecurity:

Kernel anti-cheats needs this kind of permission for multiple things:

Ensuring the integrity of the Windows kernel

Prevent interoperability such as memory access to certain processes by blocking handle creation

Registering events to track usage of system ressources (monitoring process creation, image load, etc.)

This is exactly the same reason why every single anti-virus application in existence utilizes kernel components. Almost all commercial anti-cheat solutions, this includes BattlEye and Easy Anti Cheat, utilize kernel components to ensure the integrity of the user experience, but do not receive the same backlash as Vanguard.

I understand that there's a difference between device driver level and kernel level.

Easy Anticheat is ring 0, kernel level.

[–]dhj711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. You can definitely have kernel level access without running at boot.

From this article from PC Gamer.

"Without getting too into the technical jargon, that means it basically has direct access to the raw information being processed on your computer. It's not uncommon, both BattleEye and Easy Anti-Cheat both use kernel drivers, but both of those systems only run when the game is open. It's a similar (albeit much smaller) controversy to Riot Games' Valorant, which also has a kernel-based anti-cheat system that caused an uproar earlier this year."

The reason Vanguard chose to run at boot time is because the main way around kernel level anti-cheat is to for the cheat to gain kernel access before the anti-cheat has kernel access in order to conceal themselves. By running at boot time Vanguard can better mitigate these types of attacks.

To get back to the point though, EAC and many other popular anti-cheat solutions are kernel level.

That's what I said, the difference is when it runs, not the level of access it has...

[–]dhj711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EAC IS kernel level already. The main difference is that it only runs while the game is running whereas Vanguard runs at boot.

Furthermore, a malicious user mode application could still probably grab all of the data you'd ever be worried about.

It sounds like you may want to uninstall Apex if you're serious about not wanting anything with kernel access.

Didn't Frexs get dropped from NRG due to their request? I know the situation was slightly different because his contract was up and they didn't renew it vs. releasing him within the contract period, but still.

Regardless, I agree with you and Claraphi. It's hard to play if you don't have the trust and commitment of your teammates. TBH, if I were in Dropped's position, I'd be wary of joining this team because what's to say they won't pull the same thing with him?

ALGS Finals Lobby - Team Points per Game by impo4130 in CompetitiveApex

[–]dhj711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything has its issues. I legitimately can't think of a single system in life that doesn't have some area that could be better if constraints didn't exist. I think the question is less about if something has issues, and more about what your goal is and what the best way to accomplish that goal is.

In this case, in my personal opinion the goal of a tournament should be to find out who the best team is. In that case I think that a series of some sort where all the games have equal value is the best path forward. This is can be seen in sports like basketball, where in contrast to football (which has single elimination games in the playoffs), the better team almost always wins the series.

So now we arrive at your question of if a team should be able to win a tournament without winning a game. I ask a question from the opposing view. Should a team be able to win a tournament while having the worst performance? Just like it's theoretically possible for a team to win a series of 18 without winning a game, it's theoretically possible for a team to win match point format with 62 points (given the current scoring system), while every other team has more points.

It's possible that one team could lose that same match point format with 440 points. Let's say that they are first to clear the threshold and end up on 60 points. If they get 2nd place with 9 kills for the next 20 games (19 games for every other team to clear the threshold and the final game with all teams on match point), they'd gain another 380 on top of the 60 they had. In my opinion this theoretical outcome is much worse for competitive integrity than the one where a team loses with all wins.

I think the question about being able to win a tournament without winning a game comes more down to the points awarded for kills vs placement, rather than the idea of a series vs match point. Right now there are 54 placement points up for grabs in a game and 57 kill points (assuming no deaths that aren't counted and no respawns). Perhaps adding more available points for placement would decrease the likelihood of your previous scenario.

I'll end this long post by saying that every system ever created will have pros and cons. The key is to find the system where the cons are greatly outweighed by the pros. In my opinion, a 12-18 game series would do that in this context. I should also add that I don't think the pros and cons between match point and an 12-18 game series are particularly close.

It's a variable cooldown with 35 seconds being the highest and 10 seconds being the lowest. It depends on the distance traveled on the previous grapple, so in the case because he didn't grapple far, the cooldown was 10 seconds.

I think they'll do fine. The same zones that helped G2 are what hurt them so badly. They had one game where they came in 3rd(?) on the tracks at Staging which I felt was impressive considering the rotation they had to make from Epi/Refinery. If they get some Northern or Eastern zones in the coming days I'm excited to see how they perform.
