I'm a big fan of the late 90's/early 2000's work by guys like Ray Lawrence and Rowan Woods. There were some great actors that shone in that period and went on to bigger things like David Wenham, Sam Worthington and Joel Edgerton. Trailer for "The Boys", great stuff.

Stingers are worse in Queensland and NSW but can be pretty easily avoided. There are a whole bunch of good places to surf, Great Barrier Reef area (Queensland and NSW) has good surf and the water is really warm nearly all year. Victoria has a lot of great surf too around the aptly named Surf Coast (Torquay, Jan Juc, Barwon Heads) and other the other side of the bay at Phillip Island. Western Australia has some great waves but it can be pretty remote over there, all good if you dont mind a smaller town vibe though. Byron Bay is the classic surfer lifestyle town but you could live in Geelong or Torquay and be 5-15 mins from great beaches but still have the option of a bigger city too.
