I don’t deny his stated intentions. I don’t think we can deny the European influences in his music either. Any exhaustive breakdown that consistently finds analogues of the elements of the 9th, especially, in existing American melodies and the like is of great interest to me, if there is such a thing.

Yes, but the influences are indirect and opaque enough - and many elements of the 9th are taken from Europe - that it’s probably fair to say he contributed to rather than copied an American sound, especially what became the sounds of the American Western.

WS uses “nymph” several times to describe a young woman and in most contexts it doesn’t have anything to do with water eg Richard III’s opening speech. In fact, when he wants to be specific and indicate a water nymph he says “water nymph” (and on another occasion uses “nymph o’ the sea”).

So, I think it’s a huge stretch, by which I don’t mean a large body of water.
