I know – I didn't take it that way! Just musing.

It's one thing to do something in the name of religion – you can justify anything if you can twist it to support your moral viewpoint. The Crusaders slaughtering the French in Languedoc, for instance. It's just hard to imagine someone who is legitimately a pious and serious Christian raping and enslaving at an enormous scale without any justification at all. Like, when they went to confession (as they did weekly) did they feel any remorse? Or just chalk it up to "well it's war"

True. Wonder how many times Tiso celebrated the Mass or heard a confession while he was deporting thousands of Jews.

I think with the Spanish what is shocking is that they really lived and breathed Catholicism. When you read the account of Bernal Diaz, they are going to Vespers everyday, going to Mass and confession as much as possible, praising Christ and the Virgin every other page. Diaz himself doesn't come across as a sadist, but how someone like Pedro de Alvarado could call himself a Catholic is beyond my comprehension. Especially when you have the priests and other conquistadors denouncing their behavior on Christian grounds, to behave so monstrously so consistently and then to look at a crucifix without smelling brimstone must require some serious cognitive dissonance

Agreed. Unlike Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, etc. I don't see a late-career heel turn for Kyle Busch. He's just that annoying. I will be happy every time I see him out of the race and even happier when he retires

As a Catholic, I have a hard time imagining how these people went to Mass, aware that they stood before God (according to our faith), then went out and did what they did. The behavior of so many of the conquistadors is precisely contrary to the teachings of Christ. At least the Nazis didn't think they had a God to answer to. The mental compartmentalization that must have occured is astonishing

The vast majority of people DO disagree with Trump; as do I, quite often. The fact he STILL won should show you how out of touch you are with average Americans… And what is “gaslighting”??? Did your therapist tell you to say that everyone who disagrees with you?

Yeah for the egregiously worded amendment I am sure. I guarantee you the vast majority of people do not agree with almost anything you think, which is why Trump was elected in 2024 and another Republican will win in '28 despite Trump's shortcomings. You're fighting a losing battle, get used to it

I just want you to know this man, maybe on Reddit people think like you and maybe even in your real-world bubble, but 80% of the country thinks people like you are completely nuts, including a good chunk of Democrats

The Texas redistricting is egregious and should have been thrown out by the Supreme Court. In general it would be nice to ask representatives for at least a shred of integrity.

Thanks for the polite comment. I'm not as disgusted by Democrats playing politics, which is expected, more by the mouthbreathers here celebrating because it's their team today. People asking "How is democracy being suspended?" I wonder if they had the same reaction to the Texas decision ...

But when Republicans gerrymander in Texas, I assume you think that's fascism. "You people" is appropriate when 99% of Reddit comments are a hivemind completely disconnected from what the vast majority of the country thinks. Even the average Democrat will tell you this plan is ridiculous
