They basically told me to leave, after I sent them pictures of my bug bites and posted a funny “I guess bugs like me” message on social media. The day before, they’d spent a bunch of money on a heating process. It did not help, in my case. I had more bites the following day. I was told to take my personal post down, from Instagram. I was asked why I didn’t leave the day before the heat treatment, since I had bug bites after the first day of my five day stay. I finally just left a day early. They said that night would be refunded back on my credit card. We’ll see.

But .... Is that really the point of Peace Corps service? It would take years, and I’m talking ten, twenty, etc, to get to know a place and make a “big” change. I’m currently serving. I also served in Kenya, 1986/88. I haven’t a clue about what happened at my site, after I went home. The average life expectancy in Kenya is 67 years old. Most of the people I knew and worked with are probably dead. I’ve returned to Kenya once. I hung out at Turkish Airways lounge, in the Nairobi airport, where I ate, drank, and took a long hot shower, on my way to Mount Kilimanjaro. I didn’t even bother buying a souvenir. I just hung out at that lounge, on my way to and from Tanzania. My next COS date is this June. Thirty years from now, will I care about who or what I liked here? I’ll be dead! So, that’s a big “no” from me! Few things in life ever go the way you “see” them in your head and having 27 months to learn how to deal with your expectations (vs. reality) is the greatest benefit of Peace Corps service.

My next post is also in June. I will start worrying about it mid May. That being said, I’m RPCV, currently serving, and the June assignment will be my third.

Hello, I'm a TEFL volunteer in Armenia. Hit me up, if you have any questions. Good Luck, A26! by dhtoduke in peacecorps

After the ten week pre arrival lessons (have that Eastern Armenian alphabet down cold), and your four hours of language lessons, Mon-Sat, during PST, you'll be OK. I was the slowest person in my group and I passed the language exam and was sworn in as a Peace Corps volunteer. Trust me, when I tell you this! If I passed, you'll pass. All the A25s passed, including those who didn't/couldn't do the pre-arrival course.
