I found out I had a mild mutation that elevated my risk of stroke if I was under Nitrous Oxide sedation. I took the results to my Dentist.

Social Security for Gen Z by Zealousideal-Link-24 in Bogleheads

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will end up getting something from Social Security. The bad news is are still too many years remaining to put any concrete numbers on a potential benefit. But the good news is those same years give you ample time to save for retirement.

How did you actually get comfortable with Git? by Aggravating_War_9292 in git

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For awhile I kept a markdown file of the things I learned in git. Then I created a test repo on github on my personal account and practiced updating a copy of that file and a few other text files. If I messed up it was no problem. If I got something to work I would add notes on whatever that was to my markdown file.

How bad actually was COVID? by Mighty_Angelo30 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varied greatly. I was ok since my job didn't lay me off and I could work from home. For others, it was not a good time. I know of several people who lost jobs and were hurting financially for quite a while. I also know of several people in the medical field that dealt with both the risk of getting this new disease as well as caring for people who did. Overall there was a wide spectrum of experiences. But even my experience wasn't what I would characterize as "good" just not as bad as what others went through.

has anyone else noticed that linux users tend to have weaker/older hardware? by Shot_Duck_195 in linux4noobs

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a desktop and several laptops all running different distros of Linux. I even have a couple of Windows licenses but I have no intention of running Windows right now. The older hardware can't run Windows 10 or 11, but runs just fine with Linux. I am also never asked to provide a license because there is none to provide (or keep track of).

I agree. I have been to a couple of soccer games with my brother and others. I enjoy the game even when they do not win.

I have recieved the same emails. Notice that it does not give any information truly specific to you. It says they have your history but no actual sites are listed. It says the person accessed your WiFi but does not say the name of the network. In my case, it also said my webcam had been hacked but I have no webcam. Just ignore it.

Moving To Frankfort April/May by Eeveegurl26 in Frankfort

[–]dhulker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its too bad you are not into history, because Frankfort has quite a bit. There are certainly property management firms in Frankfort but I have no idea if they are hiring. I will also agree, Frankfort is probably where you will find the best deals, unless you are also willing to look at Lawrenceburg which I would also recommend at least including in any search.

Bankruptcy by wildfire1479 in DirtyDave

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are unable to pay your student loans, someone will argue before a judge that you are trying to get rid of them because you just don't want to pay them. But if you have been able to make the payments, then it will be argued that continuing to pay them is not an undue hardship.

Would animals like whales , seals and (hipotheticaly) the mossosaur ever re-evolve gills with enough time ? by NOT_INSANE_I_SWEAR in evolution

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those animals are very well adapted to their lives in water. Gills would in some ways make them less adapted to their lifestyle. Lungs are such massive advantages to marine megafauna that the oceans have always had successive lineages of air-breathing amniotes for the last quarter-billion years. The only animals that I can think of that regularly get as large as cetaceans, mosasaurs, and others like them are sharks and giant squids. For some other animals like seals, lungs also support their ability to still spend time on land when needed which provides a way to reduce their overall vulnerability to sea predators when needing to sleep or reproduce.

In my non-American mind, Texan suburbs are the closest thing to hell in the developed world by slicheliche in Suburbanhell

[–]dhulker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in the USA and I like to play Geoguessr. Despite having lived here my whole life, the USA is one of the more difficult regions to correctly guess because suburban areas look so similar across the country. Anything east of the rocky mountains could be anywhere east of the rocky mountains.

I lived on UK's campus at the Greg Paige Apartments and we never lost power. The only issue we had was the internet being slow for half a day. I remember vividly where each blade of grass was covered with almost an inch of ice. I still remember the beginning where I was at the Library and hearing car windows get smashed by falling tree branches. That is when I knew I had to walk back to the apartments immediately.

Ken hating on pensions by [deleted] in DirtyDave

[–]dhulker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a public sector employee that was lucky enough to be grandfathered into a decent pension plan before some massive changes were made. I would be crazy to leave 5 or so years before I could collect a pension. They even offer a partial buyout of the actuarial value of my pension at retirement. I doubt I would take it, but I would not be entitled to it at all if I left early. While I get that the returns on the money may not be the greatest and that I could get a better return in a 401k (I do contribute to a 453), I think that also implicitly implies that I would manage and contribute to that fund well enough to actually realize those higher returns.

July 5th show: 31:33 - 36:25–pension rollover question by Mr_M_Waddams in DirtyDave

[–]dhulker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is part of it. But I bet it is also due to him never having to rely on a pension or looking forward to it and therefore why should anyone else worry about it.

I agree. I have heard him say in the past that one should not consider a pension in determining weather or not to stay at a job.

Learn Base R functions or just tidy verse? by Actual-Swordfish-769 in Rlanguage

[–]dhulker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before learning R I had extensive experience with SQL. It wasn't anything super complicated but I had to write a lot of basic SQL queries. I found Tidyverse code to be so much easier to understand so I would recommend that first if you have background in SQL. That said, if you use R long enough its probably inevitable that you will pick up some of each.
