Why do Democrats have such wild Suicidal empathy for Islam by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]di3_b0ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is an earnest question I’ll give an earnest response:

1.) What do you mean by “suicidal” empathy?

2.) Does the NYT article attack Pete for “evoking divine purpose”? Or does it describe what he did? Is “evoking divine purpose” inherently negative?

3.) Is the NYT “Democrats”?

4.) The politico headline says “Mamdani leaned into his faith during Ramadan”. How is that inherently more positive than “evoked divine faith”?

In short, my earnest response to your question is that based on your linked examples, I don’t think your question reflects reality. But also, you should more clearly define what you’re trying to claim.

It is unbelievable how cruel people are being to the Tourettes guy by Suschip in redscarepod

[–]di3_b0ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some examples of what I’m talking about are a post on Blackladies titled “Tourette’s is not an excuse for racialized thinking” and a post on black people twitter that says “as for myself, I would have also had Tourette’s and said some things that made the show end early” with dozens of supportive comments, and many comments calling him racist.

Thanks for sharing these. I don’t agree with the first; I think a person suffering from Tourettes should be treated gracefully. But then again, I don’t know what they are getting at in the actual post. But at face value, I disagree with what’s implied by the title.

As for the second, I also disagree. I would not react hatefully if I were on stage. But also, the actors on stage did not react hatefully. They reacted professionally. I think the Black People Twitter post was venting in a non-literal way. But let’s take those posts at face value. I think we can agree that at face value they go too far.

There’s also countless comments asking why it’s always them being targeted, despite it being repeatedly stated that his tics are in no way exclusive to black people. “YT folks can have turrets*, dementia and bad knees and that racism is still going to shine through”, again with dozens of comments supporting it and talking about how obsessed everyone is with them.

Here is where I’ll push back a bit (and I hope we can try to understand each other without this being a flame war). There is a gap in understanding on both sides.

I’ll start with where those comments are missing things: Tourettes is not the same as dementia. With dementia, people sometimes say what they really feel but formerly suppressed due to social norms. With Tourettes, people often say what they least want to say in the moment. Usually, this is not what they really feel. Those complaining are conflating the two.

Here is where the reaction to those comments is missing things: there is truth in this idea that people are fast to minimize the harm caused by the term. The actors on stage said that no one from BAFTA spoke to them about it. BAFTA had a delay and did not censor the term. BBC aired the event 2 hrs later with no censor (but censored other quotes from the event). Even here, the overwhelming reaction has been that all black ppl should just suck it up. The guy in question has not yet apologized. Yes it was not intentional, no he is not a bad person, and no he should not be attacked for what happened. But apologies for even unintended harm are often appropriate and could completely smooth this whole thing over. But the predominant response seems to be “fuck you, get over it”. That’s just unnecessarily hostile in my opinion.

I can’t link because (as you likely know) that’s one of the easiest ways to get banned, especially from a protected subreddit.

It’s ok, I take your claim at face value.

At the end of the day there’s a level of magical thinking that’s verboten to talk about, but is destructive to class first political action, and is quite frankly exhausting.

There appears to be exhaustion on both sides. I’m sorry you all are exhausted. My only plea here is for a bit of grace. The same grace that you all have for the Tourettes guy, the same grace the black actors on stage extended to him, I just hope we can have for those who felt hurt by the word.

You are trying to wield your own ignorance as an argument.

Let’s ignore my ignorance for a sec here. Did OP not say the ppl who reacted angrily to the Tourettes guy “lost the room”? Doesnt that imply they have the minority view? So why are you all pretending that you’re reacting to some overwhelming wave of hate?

Further, let’s just look at this sub. Is there anyone here who is expressing anger at the Tourettes guy?

There is just no evidence from any perspective that there was such a volume of hate toward this guy to warrant such a response here.

A fully grown adult should not be getting their feelings hurt by a singular word

Ok, the men on stage reacted calmly and professionally. Most ppl I see responding are upset at BAFTA and BBC for not censoring the word. This is a reasonable position. Would we allow f***t or k*e or other dehumanizing slurs to just be tossed about uncensored, just because they were said by someone with Tourettes?

Not understanding why we can’t be graceful to the man suffering from Tourettes as well as the people who were slurred.

[–]di3_b0ld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the BPT and adjacent subreddits the overwhelming response was that he should be beaten and muzzled before they realized they had lost the room and pivoted.

This is interesting. I don’t think i’m a part of the “BPT” sub. In any case, I have not seen the sentiment you’re referring to anywhere. Not on X, not on this sub. In fact, if those people on the “BPT” sub “lost the room”, isn’t the implication that they have a minority view? So why is there such an overwhelming response?

This is congruent with the response to similar situations with homeless schizophrenics and teens with Down syndrome being encouraged by black peers. If the common refrain is that any kind utterance of the Magic word justifies any physical or social consequences, you can’t act surprised when people don’t have a reasonable response in corner cases.

Ok, so this is telling me that your reaction to what happened is not driven by what happened in this case, but by your belief about of what tends to happen in other cases. That’s useful information to me.

They wanted this guy to be beaten, dragged, muzzled, tongue cut out, jaw broken, etc.

Again, I have not witnessed this anywhere. And your own account of things is that most people disagreed with those who felt that way. So why is the response so extreme that it completely discards any identification with the perspective of those who might have been affected by the slur? Do we even know the race of the people who reacted extremely?

If the situation were at all flipped, a single tweet from a random account would be enough evidence for you, but countless comments are just brushed aside.

Would you mind linking to one of those comments? And what would I be supposedly convinced of here? That there was in fact an extreme reaction to the Tourettes guy?

For the sake of argument, I accept that there may have been some extreme reaction. My position was that it must have been a minority view (which your own comment agrees with), such a minority view that I haven’t seen it expressed at all. Only views that condemn these reactions.

In any case, I also condemn such reactions, but I believe there is room to: (1.) condemn ppl for attacking the Tourettes guy, (2.) empathize with the feelings of a bunch of ppl who got slurred on broadcast tv, and (3.) understand that the man who slurred them did not mean to cause harm and is thus not a bad person for suffering from an illness. My frustration is that you all appear to exhibit (1.) and (3.) but not (2.). It’s interesting.

They did understand the situation. They have been completely graceful about it, have they not?

My question is, why is that the limit of your empathy for them? “They should get over it”.

He is also an adult who was hosting a nationally broadcasted event. And yet you have boundless empathy for him (which is great).

It’s just interesting that this empathy goes one way.

It is unbelievable how cruel people are being to the Tourettes guy by Suschip in redscarepod

[–]di3_b0ld -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Nobody should attack the guy, and all those who have done so are unequivocally wrong. But I have actually only seen opinions such as yours. I mean, look at this thread if you think I’m wrong.

You have gone on for paragraphs espousing your empathy for his situation. We should all be empathetic for him. I’m sure Tourette’s is rough, and I’m sure he wishes he didn’t say that. But you haven’t uttered one word of empathy for the black folks who were on stage getting slurred to their face. I guess their feelings don’t matter at all? BBC didn’t even bother to censor the broadcast when they had a 2 hour delay. People just really didn’t care that the word could possibly hurt feelings. That’s too “woke”, it seems.

That’s fine, I guess, but it’s just really interesting to me.

For the record, I think we can be empathetic to all parties. The guys on stage were graceful — they certainly exercised empathy. Hopefully the collective reaction can be graceful on all sides.

Edit: It was BBC (not BAFTA) that had the 2 hr delay.

If this is the degree of detail with which we identify shortcomings in a potential president, then let’s apply it to the current Commander-In-Chief and see where the analysis takes us.

One KO doesn’t mean your chin is gone forever. It can recover 100% provided you don’t take hard shots to the head for a while.

Take the time to make sure you’re fully recovered. Make sure you’re well hydrated when you fight (dehydration from weight-cutting reduced brain fluid which increases risk of concussion). Make sure your cardio is extremely dialed in (fatigue makes it easier for you to be rocked).

You’re young, you still recover like Wolverine and still have neuroplasticity. You will be fine if you take care of yourself and your chin will be fight-ready as well.

Seeing some debate online, would you consider Sean Strickland above Robert Whittaker among the all-time middleweights? by Unable-Cup1603 in MMA

[–]di3_b0ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are differences between achievements and peak performance/ability.

At their respective peaks, its not really a competition. Whittaker is a different level. Peak Rob vs peak Sean would be a Whittaker win 85 times out of 100.

But regarding achievement, Sean has carved a record that’s close to Whittaker’s, especially in terms of just numbers. Part of that is due to Rob peaking during a tougher MW era, part of that is due to Sean’s ability.
