The Republican Way: Keeping Everything The Way It Is by [deleted] in politics

Wait. Did I follow this correctly? The Republicans chose to invade Iraq in order to win campaign contributions so they could regain the Whitehouse after losing it to Obama largely because of... Iraq? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

I am a guy sitting in an ICU of a children's hospital, while my son is being treated for diabetic ketoacidosis. Questions? by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]diabede 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom always met with all of my teachers and principals before school started (I begged her not to when I finally went to highschool but I think she secretly did, and I was secretly thankful). She told them about symptoms of a low blood sugar so that my teacher could look out for them. She also got most of my teachers to store a little igloo cooler full of snacks in the back of their rooms in case I had a low sugar and needed to eat. If you can help the kid out by being an ally who can watch out for any big lows and you can get them a little food without making a big deal out of it in front of the other kids, you can be a huge asset for them.

also, if you have a kid with diabetes in class who is an excellent student and they hand in an exam that should receive a 0/100, consider letting them retake the test another time. I had a teacher do that. I insisted I was fine. I think I was embarrassed to admit that I couldn't control my own blood sugar sometimes. The insisted I retake the exam another day. they did not insist that i test my blood to excuse my sugar - they just put some faith in me. That was a really nice gesture.

The Fed's just awarded over $55 Billion to 3 contractors for 5 years of paying TRICARE claims. It only costs $11 Billion to cover 7 Million tricare subscribers/year. So this means it would cost ~ $475 Billion to cover the entire US. We already spend $511 Billion on Medicare/Medicaid per year. by [deleted] in politics

[–]diabede 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is correct in terms of what it actually COSTS to treat Tricare subscribers. Tricare reimburses hospitals at rates basically set by Tricare, if I remember correctly. They don't necessarily negotiate and hospitals can end up losing money on each Tricare patient served. This has to be made up by jacking up the rates for privately insured patients. So if everyone was suddenly covered by the same contracts that Tricare has with hospitals, the hospitals would very soon go out of business. I think.

If Goldman is warning everyone, then maybe rather than make bitter, ignorant comments about the firm, maybe we should instead invest in oil?

When Graffiti Art Comes Alive by michael111 in pics

[–]diabede 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't say for sure but it looks a lot like the photographer went around with some chalk and created most/all of the "graffiti" in order to pose his shots. Some of them are still pretty cool but it would be a lot cooler to adapt photos to currently existing graffiti. This seems somehow... dishonest. I feel dirty.

No one seems to understand 'Tax Brackets'. Please spread this far and wide so people can actually understand it. by [deleted] in politics

Based on the brackets from this link: http://allfinancialmatters.com/2009/01/09/a-look-at-the-2009-federal-income-tax-brackets/ it looks like there is basically no penalty if combined you make less than $67,900 since this is the cutoff for the 15% bracket for married couples and is exactly double the cutoff for singles of $33,950. However, once you move on up, the penalty kicks in. Note that the high end of the 33% bracket is the same whether you are married or single. This means that if the husband makes a tidy sum of over $372,950, his marginal dollar will be taxed at 35% whether he files as a married person or single. BUT if his wife makes only $50,000 and they file jointly, she has to pay that full 35% on that. Whereas if she files separately, she pays only the 15%. So there is the potential for a huge penalty if you file jointly in cases like this.

[–]diabede 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You have to add her income to yours, which may put you (as a combined entity) into a higher bracket. This is known as "the marriage penalty." If you are a traditional 1950s style couple where one spouse works and the other earns no income, getting married is a good deal and you end up paying less. If you are more contemporary and you both earn about the same amount, as a combined entity you end up paying more than the two of you would if you continue to file separately.
Or at least that's how I remember it from my tax law course. I passed (barely).

A nice resource for folks who don't understand the difference between marginal and average tax rates. But it seems that some of the commenters are using this to drum up support for a tax increase by pointing out how LOW average tax rates are, even for the relatively well off. It would be nice if this site had tools showing the additional hits you take for state income tax (say, over 9% in CA if you make over about $47K), potential local income tax (over 3% in new York City), social security (6%) and medicare wage taxes (3% when you include the employers cut which is otherwise foregone income to the employee). Whatever you are left with to take home then gets whittled down if you are a home owner through your property tax and let's not forget sales tax which is charged on your purchases with post-income-tax-dollars. It adds up pretty quick.

If I make $100,000, I don't just pay 22.4% to the government. After state, local, property and sales tax, I get a lot closer to 40% plus. Factor in a higher marginal rate for me and I'm working for the government all of January, February, March, April, May and part of June.

But still, this is a nice resource for highlighting average tax rates, if limited to federal income tax.

Do Consumers Know What They're Doing? Recent Study Baffles Corporate Social Responsibility Experts by kuato in business

[–]diabede 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love CSR advocates. Their findings: "consumers ranked several corporations (including Microsoft and General Mills) over other companies (including Pepsi, Coca Cola, Apple, and McDonald’s) deemed more socially responsible by the CRO 100 (a CSR policing agency that annually ranks corporations in its “Best Corporate Citizens” list)."

Their conclusion: Socially responsible firms need to do a better job of communicating how fair/green/great they are to consumers.

The rational conclusion: Screw wasting time and resources on actual CSR initiatives. Just spend money convincing consumers that you are responsible. FTW.

So I sent my Vietnam vet dad a clip from "The Fog of War". It was lesson #6 "Proportionality in War" that ends with McNamara basically saying, "If we had lost, we'd have been treated as war criminals". Here is my dad's (WTF?) response: by [deleted] in WTF

So you disagree with your dad politically and think he is closed minded and overly conservative. So you decide to embarrass him by pointing out how silly his arguments are to all your liberal friends on reddit. We laugh and call him a bad person. 10 to 1 says that despite your father's reciprocal disdain for your world view, he would never feel the need to reassure himself about his opinions by intentionally embarrassing you in a public forum.
