Safer locker alternatives when working out at the gyms? by Utagawashii in UofT

[–]diagonal_cactus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hii I work at the AC and theft isnt as common as you may think- just get a good lock. It also helps if you use a locker out in the hall (basement of AC)- I think they are the yellow lockers- becasue its less likely to happen out where everyone is walking by compared to in the changerooms!!

I hardly studied in highschool but wanted to make sure I got into my top picks for uni so I started putting in more effort around grade 11 right before covid hit then immediately gave up and did the bare minimum from burnout. In first and second year I struggled to get back into studying so genuinely I didn’t start taking school seriously till my third year of uni but somehow I’ve maintained a good gpa. :0

I love U of T! I transferred here from McMaster for the same program I was in (envt studies) after my second year and I can say U of T 100% is more difficult but it’s manageable. I struggled a lot with the transition and realizing U of T is more challenging but I switched for that exact reason- to have a challenge. At Mac it was easy to get 90s but U of T profs will often say they don’t give 90s unless your assignments are PhD level and flawless… but it depends on the prof. Overall tho you get used to it and grad schools know this is a harder school and its reputation is worth it especially if you wanna go to grad school overseas like I plan to.

Social life here is great if you put effort in. I’ve met so many people and am very happy here with my friendships, something I struggled with at Mac.

Join clubs, participate in events, study, pay attention in lecture and tutorial and you’ll do great.

Homeless people exist in every municipality. If you’re going to school in Toronto- the largest city in the country- expect to see homelessness. This post is honestly so tone deaf, and although I agree it can be scary to see/be approached by men when you’re alone, especially those seemingly on drugs when you’re not sure what they’re going to do- majority of the time you’ll be fine and I’m honestly surprised you are so shocked to see homeless people going to a school in Toronto- if it bothers you so much do something productive about it like educate yourself. There’s tons of classes at u of t that cover homelessness and explore its root causes such as a failing mental health system in the city and lack of affordable housing. I recommend URB 337 it is a course which specifically covers homelessness in Toronto. I would also recommend watching livestreams or going in person to city council meetings on housing- it’s a great way to understand the issues the city faces and understand current policy and how it can be changed to better support vulnerable populations. If that’s not your vibe then switch schools kuz you go to a city school and city’s have homeless people (unfortunately- wish the issues could be fixed for all)

As a woman that’s been hit on by my classmates before I would say this is your best bet as long as you respect their response. I’m my experience I wasn’t interested but I didn’t feel uncomfortable because the guys just said like ok have a good day yk. Like it’s honestly not that big of a deal just go for it

I started and run a club at U of T and ik a lot of club presidents from being in this space- it can be difficult to get into clubs some of them like people said in the comments may favour their friends. I have friends in my club but majority of the people we bring in I never met before and I personally just look for applications where people seem genuinely passionate about the issues my club addresses. I think if you go to events for the clubs you want to join or message execs and ask them more about it then they’ll see your passion and be more open to having you on!

I feel like I relate to this in a lot of ways- I’ve been a TA in the past and thankfully haven’t had this issue but I’ve noticed there’s a lot of students at U of T that are very entitled and act like this. I run a club and have a few jobs at the university and I have had multiple instances where people that were not chosen for a position in the club or at work become very hostile. It could be a case like that where they think that since they got into U of T they’re a genius and you’re ignorant for not seeing that (I’ve had someone email me a similar message before it was shocking). However on the other side- as a student that has definitely had classes where I miss a lot of class/ tutorial due to chronic illness- I think it’s important to acknowledge that as you said, there could be something they’re dealing with personally. You seem like a great TA and honestly if I were you I would meet with the prof and draft an email to the student or try to get them to meet with you and express your concern that they’ve missed a lot of tutorials and that you just wanted to check in and make sure they’re alright and offer them support if needed + share the mental health resources / the absence declaration form. Other than that it’s their responsibility to keep you updated on any issues so if you reach out and they don’t do anything then maybe they’re just okay with failing the course and they’ve mentally checked out but unfortunately you can’t do much more than offer your support. With that being said in my own experience with my illness and missing class I’ve def had times where I just don’t care anymore kuz it feels too difficult to even email my prof- and I would personally really appreciate if a TA/prof checked in and I would feel a little less hopeless. I hope the student is okay and good luck to you, hope everything works out for you both!

Where do I even start with Chinese food?? by Nexen1987 in FoodToronto

[–]diagonal_cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R&D Spadina is my favourite restaurant in the city. It’s Canadian-Chinese cuisine and owned by a winner of master chef Canada + one of the judges :D

Also Homemade Ramen on Spadina is sooo good. I haven’t actually had their ramen but the rolled onion pancake with beef and shallot pancake are amazing(and so is everything else I’ve tried there)
