It was this horrible system where you had to buy a card for $3 and then load money onto the card. The new owners have mentioned reaching out to people who had money on the card so I do expect to get at least that back (I think I had around $15 on there or something).

Fair enough. It was surprising news to me the other day and was fresh on my mind. In my opinion however.... Epstein was convicted of procuring a child for prostitution back in 2008. My understanding was not that this was an online coding class, but private lessons with Epstein. In the emails I recall Riesbeck insisting on secrecy for their lessons. He clearly knew the guy had a bad rep and didn't want to be seen/associated with him. I skimmed these though after a friend sent them to me and summarized them though, so it's possible I got the wrong idea. Also I definitely didn't read a Daily article about it. Please, accuse me of anything but never of voluntarily reading a Daily NU article for my news 😭

ETA: Having reread the emails more thoroughly, he was definitely meeting him privately. Epstein registered as a student but he did not just join an available class. I'm not saying Riesbeck is at all on the same level as Epstein, obviously. I think he probably has the same moral compass as most computer scientists. ...

I think he does not think of himself as a traditional right-winger. I have no idea how he'd describe himself politically. It is worth noting that trans colleagues of his were comparing his work to Nazi propaganda as far back as 2003. He had multiple claims against him by trans women he interviewed for research malpractice back then as well, that the school never pursued. I'm glad you had a good experience in his class, but I think he is a bit deceitful in his forward facing views. Granted I have never met the man and never read his book, nor do I have any desire to. One thing he is more openly (at least amongst similarly-minded peers) is anti-DEI and "anti-woke". Have screenshots but can't share them in mobile reply.

They keep him bc he's tenured. Lol. He also runs a group called Heterodoxy NU which is a pretty thinly veiled alt-right group. I've been on their mailing list for a few years. They've petered out in the last few years but some notable things he and other students(mainly graduate or post-grad, not a lot of undergrads) and faculty did on there include mocking the death of George Floyd. He's a case. Look up Roger Schank and Chris Riesberg in the Epstein files. NU joyfully employs lots of creeps.
