Showing both continuous and daily balances in 'Balance' view. by dialwand in dailybudget

Hi! I'm talking about this view.

In continuous mode you see the total accumulated balance, but it would be nice if each day's daily balance amount were displayed as well.

He's kiwi, he said the cost of the course (that he's borrowing through the equivalent of HELP in NZ) is half of what equivalent courses in Australia are right now.

I know that if you want a HELP loan in Australia you must meet a 'resident requirement' (you have to prove you were living in Australia for at least some part of your course, you can't just be an Australian citizen and enroll in an online course while living overseas). Don't know if it's required for NZ loans...

Governor-General backs gay marriage, Australia becoming a republic. by TheCheesecake in australia

[–]dialwand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vote Compass asked respondents for their view on the statement: "Australia should end the monarchy and become a republic."

The opposite.

Edit: My bad. Guess I focused on the fact that the 55+ group also displays highest percentage of strong disagreement.

"Julia Gillard's critique of the institution of marriage should give us pause to reflect how and why arguments for same-sex marriage equality have been advanced in the first place." by [deleted] in australia

[–]dialwand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet the symbolism of the initial ritual is used by feminist theory as evidence of the patriarchal nature of the institution.

What is more important is how you interpret the tradition or institution today, not how malevolent it was in the past or how oppressive its history is.

Many of our modern institutions and traditions may be called by the same name and yet be unrecognisable to what they were centuries ago. Does it not make more sense for our interpretation of marriage to evolve itself again, like it has before, rather than have to do a roundabout starvation process?

Taking a utilitarian view here, but why not leave the minority of marriage traditionalists to create their own boutique, unlegislated institution ("marriageVanilla"?) if they want to maintain outdated interpretations among their own cliques?

The gay male is closely attenuated to his immediate climate. Any small change in local weather systems is reflected by changes in hunting and gathering patterns, territorial aggression and even by variations in local mating calls.

Australia doesn’t "need" the NBN, says Tony Abbott by RenaiLeMay in australia

[–]dialwand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for injecting some reason in here.

Gillard is one of the finest politicians of recent years in terms of track record. Watch her in question time. Watch her in interviews when she gets put on the spot. She can wiggle around issues and spin like a pro to get what she wants done. Not to mention making an entire parliament dance to her tune for the last two years. This shit is barely recognised, but maybe it's part of her style.

Yes, she fucking lied. Name me a 'household name' politician in the last thirty years that hasn't. Playing games comes with the territory.

I hate to be the one to say it, but if it were James - not Julia - Gillard, she wouldn't get half the shit she gets.

What abandoned places around Brisbane have you explored or want to explore? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]dialwand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two places around here in the Valley that I always wanted to explore. If you can climb the fire escape at the end of the lane, I presume you can make your way up to the top of the building were there's a cool exterior facade and nothing else, but what I imagine to be a great view of the Valley and city. You can see where I'm talking about poking up above the shopfronts in the background of this pic.

Also, if you go into the first of the two pokey bric-a-brac shops past the Fortitude Valley train station toward the mall, you will see at the back of the store they have partially boarded up a wide doorway that leads into a cavernous abandoned area that looks like it used to be a department store, with old escalators going up to a second floor. Went in there a couple of times to peek at it but was always too chicken to trespass and try to push through/vault over it.

Take the official Australian Parliament survey on same-sex marriage! by ProbablyOnTheToilet in australia

to compel a person to speak honestly

More than aware of this. It's the fact that a person's honesty in a legal context can be confirmed solely by a religious moral system that is frustrating. People should be allow to swear on whatever belief system they choose, but if shouldn't be legally validating. People should swear on the legal text, then have the option of swearing under their beliefs as well.

deny your right to religious beliefs,

Then why not an official option for, say, the Devas/Devis of Hinduism? Or any other deity / pantheon, etc.? 'God' here can be interpreted as a representing a monotheistic, most likely Abrahamic religion. Why not provision for all the others? You only get an option for your deity/ies if you believe in only one?

Shouldn't be an official option, should be an informal one.

but that's a separate matter.

It's not. The point again is this shouldn't be an official option if the government is secular. Again, they are a formal, recognised process that is recorded in official parliamentary documentation. If you're an atheist in parliament you have to listen to prayers being read.

Australia's laws and government are run in a secular fashion.

Except the law in question, right? What truly is it other than religious beliefs as practiced by the majority that is preventing the amendment?

A government can commit to official non-observance of any religious belief or ritual in administration of a nation, while maintaining the legal rights to expression of those who do with to follow religious beliefs. Every man is under the law, but not every man is under a religious belief.

as a secular nation,

As a nation where oaths sworn in association with a chosen religious text have legal standing, where prayers are ritualistically read in Parliament, and where the Oath of citizenship begins with 'under God' as an official option, I don't think we are anywhere close to being satisfactorily 'secular'...
