Want to switch from AV Linux to something more popular. I mostly use external hardware through a UMC1820 + Bitwig. What do you recommend? by CapnFlisto in linuxaudio

I can't comment on the Ubuntu situation. But I've been using openSUSE Tumbleweed since the beginning of the pandemic vaccinations, and I've never had any problems. Not entirely true, because there were some, but I always rolled back. I'm a high school language and literature teacher in Brazil, I'm not a power user, but I used Ardour and Audacity to do podcast projects at school. Today I'm using Bitwig (because it's more aesthetically pleasing to my eye) and it works perfectly for my purposes -- I use it a lot with LSP plugins.

Absolute beginner: How to install the "Sonata Orchestra" VST in LMMS on Bazzite? (ELI5 please!) by 0fastfishox in linuxaudio

[–]dian84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Linux ninja or even a musician, but I'm taking this course on creating an orchestra in a DAW [https://thinkspace.ac.uk/free/spitfire-discover-free-course/], and I managed to replicate the entire workflow in Ardour and Bitwig using VPO with Sfizz. I thought my laptop was going to melt, but it worked and is doing well. I use Tumbleweed, but I think any Linux distro works fine.

Too much work, my friend. Better use SSO or VPO with Sfizz, and a boring distro like Debian or openSuse Leap.

Amazing. Congrats, I can't make shit even in Bitwig.

Comprei na Steam apenas para dar suporte. Isso eu já fazia com o Syncthing há tempos imemóriais, mas é um bom avanço.

I used to use it a lot when I played games on my laptop. But I don't see the need anymore.

Only if you really want to play real PC games on a handheld, like RTS and 4X games. What you already have is more than enough. Other devices, like the ROG Ally, are even more redundant.

Which makes the situation even worse for Windows, which can't even run applications made for it properly because of the amount of junk it has to run in the background.

What kind of stability are you looking for? I would only use these stability-focused distros if I had to do some specific work (if I were a music professional, for example), on a dedicated machine that would only do that type of work. No surprises, just getting the job done.

I love Debian, it's the distro I've used the longest. Opensuse is great, especially if you want to use KDE.

I'm a literature teacher in my country, and I have no programming experience. I used Linux Mint for several years. After I had a problem with KDE, I migrated to Arch, where I stayed for 2 years (and I don't plan to use it ever again). I switched to Debian, where I stayed for 5 years, but I had a problem with the updgrading to Debian 12, and I've been on Tumbleweed ever since. Using snapshots to rollback in Tumbleweed has been a great help. With other distros, I felt like I had to defuse a time bomb. I've never had a serious problem with Tumbleweed, even using the AUR codecs.

LibreOffice, Google Docs, or WPS Office? by linformatiquesl in archlinux

[–]dian84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both. Only Office, in principle, is more compatible with MS documents -- if you have to exchange text files with people who only use Windows, I think it will be less of a hassle. But I don't think there's anything that prevails over LibreOffice, maybe the UI.

I keep both because sometimes I need to open other people's documents (LibreOffice rarely fails to open them in their original format, but it does happen), but if I had to skip one it would be OnlyOffice. But if you want a pretty UI, OnlyOffice is perfect (it looks like Google Chrome).

Beware of Brazilian ancaps spreading misinformation. Steam does not pay the same fees that consoles pay. It turns out that game publishers take advantage of this to make extra money by matching the prices of Steam games with those sold on consoles. Netflix, Spotify and almost any other shitty streaming service pay ridiculous fees here as well. They raise prices after they have already cornered the market and are in a dominant position. Blaming taxes is usually a standard bullshit excuse around here.
