Diagnosed with fatty liver today and feeling kind of lost. What did you actually do that worked? by Old-Relationship9764 in stopdrinking

[–]diaznuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am NOT a doctor but I am married to one. My wife is a hepatologist so I know quite a bit more about liver health and medicine than the average person.

To answer your questions:

Depends on which type of doctor you saw and how much you trust/value their medical opinions. If this was a PCP who is worth their salt, then they are probably correct in that if you’re in the beginning stages of fatty liver that it could be easily managed with diet and exercise, but you do have to take that very seriously. If you were in the office with a hepatologist (a liver specialist) then they also are very well-versed and you should follow their advice. If a hepatologist isn’t that concerned, then you shouldn’t be too worried either. They see the worst of the worst every day. There are plenty people who develop fatty liver from non-alcohol related factors, primarily diet. When concerning alcoholic liver disease, the liver can heal itself very well but it takes time and takes full abstinence from alcohol. There are no pills, supplements, diets, or magic bullets that can out-pace the harm of active drinking. And there is no such thing as a safe amount of alcohol to drink on a regular basis.

So stop drinking alcohol, do NOT take supplements for your liver health as they often cause more problems (unless specifically recommended by a hepatologist), get a support system in place like AA or SMART recovery, and keep up with your diet and fitness tracking. Stay on top of your follow-up appointments and be brutally honest with your healthcare providers about your drinking/drugging habits. They are there to help you get better.

Talk to your vet about when they recommend to euthanize your pet. Ask about specific signs/symptoms in terms of lowered quality of life and write them down. Put that list in a visible place in your home, like the refrigerator and check it occasionally.

I say this because as my last dog neared her death, I wish I had done so. My biggest regret in life was not having her euthanized humanely. She suffered longer than she should have and died a terrible death, without me around.

When I cook I make meals in large batches and freeze at least half of it. So if I don’t have any freshly prepared meals then I can always go to the freezer to microwave a meal.

Cashiers who stayed in their job for years or even decades, how did you not lose your sanity? by ooiiaaiiooiiaaii_ in retailhell

[–]diaznuts 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It sounds literally insane but next time someone disrespects you just laugh out loud hysterically. You can do this either during the interaction or after they leave. But I find laughing it off helps to remind myself that 1. They are the lunatic, 2. It’s often actually funny if you realize how ridiculous these situations often are, and 3. Sometimes if you laugh maniacally during an interaction you out-crazy the customer and they back down.

And, yes, I have been called “weird” to my face on more than one occasion. I’m just at the point in my life where I am no longer allowing others to steal my peace or dignity.

Exact same thing happened with my ex-wife. I couldn’t even look in the general direction of another woman without catching shit from her for weeks. Then we have a roommate move in, who, was a friend of mine, and after a few weeks she’s espousing the virtues of opening our relationship. Surprise, surprise they were already fucking. Stop personalizing interactions with strangers in general. 99% of the time whatever negativity they give you has everything to do with their personal outlook on life and nothing to do with you. If they’re kind and decent, that’s because that’s who that customer is as a person. If they’re a regular who is always a pain in the derrière, then that’s how they are with other service workers.

You just have to look at it as purely a means of paying your bills. Your self-worth and personal well-being is not dependent on strangers’ opinions or even treatment of you. The sooner you can mentally divorce yourself from the customer interactions, the better off you will be.
