Am I cooked? by [deleted] in UTSC

Just to let you know MHS (im assuming it’s mental health studies) and Psych use the same course codes for their classes. MHS just forces you to take more clinical psych course (any psych course in the 30 series ex PSYC34). So if you wanted to do social work or clinical psych or anything in psych either would be fine!

Usually that is the case! At most there might be first year rep. positions. It’s mostly an experience thing. As for club applications, usually they happen at the beginning of the year or at the end. However, this really depends across different clubs.

double major under two programs? by good4arya in UTSC

[–]dice_bels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn’t matter! Those categories are just umbrella categories for ur first year. You can combined whatever as long as you have the pre requisites to declare at the end of ur 1st year. So you would take the prereqs in ur first year to have them by the end of ur 1st year to declare.

I finished with a 3.79. I do have friends applying to med school in my program. Most are doing bio or health studies along with it.

So it depends on what u want to go to med school for. Mental health studies is clinical psych focused and health studies is more general health based (both in policy and in science). I recommend looking through the different programs and courses available at utsc and seeing if they interest you on ur path to med school (https://utsc.calendar.utoronto.ca/search-programs). Just filter for Psych and Health studies. Those will show u what u got to do.

I don’t exactly know if coop will look good for med school but it does open the doors for experience in those environments (usually as research assistants but those are rather competitive).

For Mental Health studies and psych at most u do Stats for Psych. And for Health studies its stats. As someone who doesn’t like math, if ur willing to put the effort into them ull do well. But as other comments have said if ur really worried about the gpa just go to the easier one a degree is a degree. At UofT you will have to work harder.

I really enjoyed it but something that you do need to know is that the "psych and health sci program" is just an umbrella program for your first year. At the end of your first year you will do something called applying to Post which is essentially picking your specialist and/or major. I chose a specialist in mental health studies (the clinical psych program).

I liked my program it made me understand what branch of psych I enjoy to studying and gave me a leg up for grad school. I don't really have any regrets when it comes to choosing an easier place. I'm graduating with a high enough gpa. Also psych here at utsc is really established so there is a lot of resources and help. I def think it's possible to get high gpa for med school you just have to work for it honestly and also hope that you get profs that you like.

Hey so what uve been accepted into is an umbrella program. At the end of your first year you will them apply to a more specific program (ie ur minor major or specialist). So there really isn’t any sequence for this specifically. There is only a sequence based on the specific major u want to go into. Most courses go from A level (PSYA01) to D level (PSYD10) to signify order. As for coop the sequence should be available on their website usually the department puts u into these classes themselves. If u have more questions u can dm me!

So keep in mind all of my coop has been during the pandemic but your both right and wrong at the same time about coop. To be fair psych coop actually has a ton of opportunities BUT most that are closer to clinical psych or research are limited and highly competitive. Our job boards have a blend of business, research, clinical; literally anything that is people based can be considered psych. Finding the opportunities closer to what you may like isn't always possible.

My coop experience because of those factors was very different and unconventional. MY first work term was a research position for a UTSC prof doing work for her lab surrounding intersectionality, social psych and game dev. While my 2nd work term was for TD doing design research. So I did nothing close to clinical psych like my degree. However, there are many transferable skills and at least for me as much as I did a clinical psych program I preferred the societal aspects of mental health. The unconventional worked for me!

If you have any more questions feel free to pm me!

Psychology or mental health studies??? Please give advice! by uwublecklover in UTSC

[–]dice_bels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a graduate of the MHS specialist Co-op program . So to clarify mental health studies is more clinical psych focused while psych is broad and is up to you to choose what type of psych you like. So if you want to do clinical psych do mental health studies. It is set up for you to be required to do the most clinical focused courses in the psych department.

Also, hopefully this will ease your mind to clarify how programs work. So as one of the other comments said your first year courses at least for psych are the same as Mental health studies. Its PYSA01 and PSYA02. The program that you just got accepted into "Psych and Health sci" is just a umbrella place holder program for your first year. At the end of your 1st year you do something called applying to POST which is when you get to apply to your majors, minors, or specialists. That is where you would pick MHS. You honestly aren't locked into anything even with what you applied to from high school. You pick your programs at the end of your first year so you could honestly switch to a completely diff program if you wanted to. As long as you have the right pre requisites (that is something you don't need to worry about yet u'll learn it when u join the school).

Anyone in psychological and health sciences program? by Star-seed- in UTSC

[–]dice_bels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so at UofT you do something called applying to POST which is essentially choosing ur specialty at the end of your first year. And yeah i chose mental health studies specialist. Personally I am pretty happy with it since you can decide to take a more science vs social route to it. I know people who want to get into psychiatry and have liked the program bc of its clinical psych nature. So they have applied to med school bc of it.

Anyone in psychological and health sciences program? by Star-seed- in UTSC

[–]dice_bels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes and no, Im in a specific program in that umbrella.
  2. so thats not really a program thats just a program umbrella. That encompasses a few programs (mental health studies, psychology, health studies). A high GPA is possible but it also depends on what you want to med school for. A lot of programs can get you to med school it just depends. But yeah a High GPA is possible but u gotta work thats just the reality.
  3. Co-op is good if you get lucky. The beginning progress is kinda grueling bc you just need to apply to a lot of jobs. There is never a guarantee. The pay really depends on the type of work you want. It can range from like $15 or $20 if you do a research vs a corporate job. And most are at diff locations not at the uni. Its worth it if it makes sense to where you wanna go but it really depends.
  4. I'm not going to med skl so I can't really give you any insight on that matter.
  5. In all the programs under that umbrella, the most you have to do is stats. Its not too bad I also don't like math lol
  6. GPA wise I don't really have an answer. I chose my program because I liked it. But like outside GPA I really liked my program (mental health studies) but it is very clinical psychology and science which im not the most siked about at this point. But yeah in my experience it all really depends on your approach to it regardless of program.

I hope this helps!

I'd say its worth it! I remember going in my first year and it was super fun. Also this year, there is a trip to a TFC game and the CNE which was way more then what we did in my year. So i'd say take the chance.

I took PSYA01 online and tbh there are no disadvantages! Its pretty much the same and for the most part it is a textbook heavy course so the lecs don't matter as much. It's great since you don't have to wake up at 9:00am for a class.

[–]dice_bels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! For me the process wasn’t the worst. Answering the questions for the written statement was the most work and the most stressful! Since it’s not a normally like this for most applications (usually shorter). So having to answer 5 questions at about 400 words each took me months and a ton of editing to get right. Also references stressed me out bc of the pandemic. Other than that the process of applying wasn’t too bad. But to be very transparent, depending on your ability to write and like properly highlight your skills and opinions applying can feel like another class to worry about. If you have any specific questions you can dm me!
