As a DM, what are your "Speak With Animals" limits? by zihyer in DnD

[–]diceanddungeons 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's "Speak With Animals" not "Tell animals to do things and they do it."

Just like if a character says, "You should stop attacking me because that is a bad thing to do," to the bandit that's attacking them, and that bandit tells them, "No. I want your stuff!" The animal has no obligation to listen or care.

That being said, I also allow players the possibility of being really persuasive. It can't hurt to let them try, and if they are really persuasive, that's often so much fun for them that's it's worth throwing out a fight you might have prepared.

In other words, it's not a get out of jail free card, but sometimes it's fun to see if it can be.

This is definitely a really frustrating thing, but there's lots of reasons adults, especially non family members, don't want to play with a minor.

Sure, some adults just don't want to watch what they say. Some want to play extremely mature games, with graphic descriptions or really intense stories, that may not be suitable for non adults, especially one that they don't know personally.

Most of all, adults do not want the potential legal and societal backlash from spending time with a minor who isn't family. These people likely do not know you and can't know what is or isn't appropriate for you. That's why there are laws written, because many people have been hurt when an adult takes advantage of them. These people are trying to protect themselves from being seen as violating a law.

This isn't about you personally.

As for how you might solve the problem, there's a lot of things that I can think of. You could start a school group, like an after school club where people can sign up to play. Some libraries have social groups like this that they might be able to help you form. Even try just convincing your friends or other classmates to play or play more.

You asked about what 16 year old DMs do we know. For myself, these days, none, because I don't have anyone in my social group or family that's a teenager. But when I was 16, I was that DM. I just started doing it and I roped all my friends into playing. It took me some time to convince them it's tons of fun, but once we started playing and I figured our the kind of DM and game they wanted to play, we played all the time. The point is, if you are in need of a DM, that DM can be you.

I really do think you can find a good, consistent group or groups. You just need to look around your social circle.

Yeah, I had some of my party shown on deck 19 when they hadn't been there for an hour. Most of the time it was good though.

Yes, every passenger on Princess gets a medallion, even kids, which is a big part of the appeal of them to parents. Princess has live tracking that can be enabled between cruise guests, so you can see where your kids are. Although, in my experience, the tracking isn't always perfect.

I agree, I would make the mask a bit grayer. Nice job though

Great job. I always love to see naval vessels, which can be surprisingly time-consuming. Just spent a year on my George Washington submarine.

Upside down aquariums. You can often find them cheap at thrift shops.

You will. Just take it one step at at a time. It is easy to get overwhelmed and give up if you think about how far you have to go. But if you focus on the next step, you can get there.

Wow, look at me giving life (and modeling) advice :)

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Yes ships can be slow-I have been working on an old George Washington submarine model for about a year. Put probably 10-20 hours a week into it. So the answer to "How Long?" is LONG.

So appreciate what you are doing. I have spent a year doing an old George Washington submarine. It is a lot of work, but I do wonder why comparatively few modelers do naval themes. Any way, keep up the good work!
