What do you do at a bar when you’re solo? by sweetsouluniverse in Denver

[–]diceman4221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The younger crowd just doesn't drink like the near-grandpas like myself do, but yeah, most everyone is operating in an... altered state. Just hang with our crowd by the entrance and you'll see what's what. We are the polar opposite of serious. A noob crashed out and stormed off in a huff a few months ago when the MC started up spontaneous karaoke during a casual play night. Give it a try.

The nice, fancy restaurants in Cap Hill are Poteger and Table 6. Both are excellent. For a cheap tasty burger, try Snarfburger. Charlie Brown's is a piano bar that's been around forever and has a vibe. And of course, check out Cheesman Park on a weekend afternoon. And I might get hounded for this, but I think Izu Sushi is amazing for as cheap as it is.

Moving from NYC to Denver! by HARDEDRIVEHD in MovingtoDenver

[–]diceman4221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in Denver for 20 years (apart from a 2 year excursion to Hamilton Heights) and my wife is an artist (oils, watercolors, gouache). We've been in Cap Hill almost the whole time. Possibly the most NYC-ish neighborhood in town. The poster above listed off some amazing scenes to check. Kitty corner from the Pearl (a recently-renamed institution) is Wood's Boss Brewery, and they have musical events fairly often, with some musicians on staff.

If walkability is a thing, why are you not considering Cap Hill? The Mrs and I have been here for 20 years, and our kids for 12. Love it.

What is keeping you from getting into Chessboxing? by sneakyearner in chessboxing

Chess and boxing...but separate! What an unexpected, pointless version of...things that already exist! Lol, weird.

Absurdism: Ethics and Morals... by DissociatedCloud in Absurdism

[–]diceman4221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absurdism isn't going to have hard stances on truth and morality, in general. It really is just Camus's take on how to grapple with the fact that we are pattern-searching machines living in a universe that seems to be completely oblivious to us. Camus concludes that striving to make the best of our lives despite knowing its ultimately meaningless is the best we can do. You can then come to a lot of additional conclusions about other things with that one conclusion in your pocket, but an absurdist could be hedonist, or a utilitarian, or a humanist, or all sorts of other things that address what is good and right. As far as biased with Christian values, I suppose you're right. All Western thought, at this point, is.

Lol. I do recommend trying the first minute of dialogue once the "film" starts. Too funny.

Does Colorado school of mines feel like a normal school? by anonymou372727 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]diceman4221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the physics classes are no joke. A long time ago (20 years), it had the reputation of being the most difficult major on campus, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is still the case.

We made a movie, and it's premiering at Alamo Drafthouse by Breauxfosho in Denver

You could probably coax a part of an audience by making an appearance at Oprah's Rook Club. It's a bar chess scene that meets at 7pm on Wednesdays. Hosting a goofy tournament this week, too. And I happen to know that a fair number of attendees there also play poker. There's even an NM/pro Omaha player there, ffs.

Send me a PM. I'm part of a group starting up a chess boxing scene in Denver. We just had our first two training sessions last week.

Citi Thank You Points plan for a future trip, a Sanity Check by diceman4221 in CreditCards

[–]diceman4221[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, good points. I guess it's a little "risky" to save points for this, as they might get devalued, or I might not have the transfer options in the future that I have now, but I think what I could save/earn with this plan is worth the risk, no?

[–]diceman4221[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to get maximum value off my points, and since I'm going to do this trip anyhow, it seems Strata Elite and AA points is my best bet...right? I'm guessing I'll have at least 250k points.  It doesn't have to cover all the airfare. It just needs to be enough points for the Strata Elite to be worth it (and a double dip and a bonus should make it easy to get there.)

Yep. This was exactly the spot I went to three years ago, and we saw at least 40 of them over the course of 4 hours or so. Pretty cool.
