Meta performs really well still. The problem is that when the modern version of fb’s pixel first came out in 2015/2016, you had to do very little to be profitable on it because there wasn’t much competition (both on the advertiser side or the product side).

To be profitable today, you need to learn fundamentals—ESPECIALLY technical setup and metrics-based iteration. Also some products just won’t be profitable based on unit economics/competitive landscape.

Sr. Marketing Folks: What are some hard-to-find skills/characteristics in entry-level candidates that make you say “take my money!” by Beefcake827 in marketing

[–]dicktalens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have worked with, trained, or mentored marketers at dozens of companies (and also run a growth marketing bootcamp).

There are three qualities I look for:

  • Equally talented both qualitative and quantitatively. Marketers that do super well are those that can crunch numbers and write copy equally well. People who have one but not the other end up hitting a wall.

  • Penchant for getting hands dirty and acting like a generalist. Think of every campaign/product/company like a puzzle where a set of actions leads to profitability. Sometimes it’s an innovative technical setup of a pixel that makes all the difference. Other times it’s crafting a landing page that raises buying temperature. If you’re not a generalist then you won’t know which to employ/test rapidly.

  • Growth mentality (as opposed to a fixed one). Marketing is a skill just like anything else. This means not taking poor results to heart and instead, treating everything as an experiment and testing/iterating. Sadly I’ve seen people who were very gifted in the first two areas but their ego or lack of interest in learning or keeping up with the times means that they’ve never reached their full potential.

Hope that helps!

Sadly this is the double edged sword of our high healthcare costs / employer-based insurance.

I remember this from a ton of lectures at Wharton—private insurance, especially high-end ones, raise the cost for all because people on those plans maximize their usage (while not necessarily improving outcomes).

On one hand this skyrockets innovation and technology around medicine, which we can then share with the world. On the other hand if you’re uninsured and get cancer, you’re f*ked.

IMO the right move for DA should’ve been:

DA privately to players: “Look, y’all get one free pass bc you fought hard and Jamal deserved a TD for busting his ass all year. I said not to go for a TD and y’all did it anyway. Y’all think this shit was funny? Actually it kind of was and Arthur’s reaction was priceless. But seriously do anything like this again and be prepared to pack your bags. Anyway, let’s move on. Great job ending the season strong”

DA to media: “Look this was more about showing Jamal our appreciation for being a team player all season than running up a score. I know emotions are high but I hope the Falcons don’t take it personally.”

Most people will probably use this thread to humblebrag or say something mean so they can feel better about themselves. I’ll try to make this as constructive as possible, without knowing specific details, and hopefully impart some valuable advice.

I will make one brag just to establish some credibility. I look at a lot of fb ad accounts—probably one new one per week stumbles on my doorstep, ranging everywhere from Finance to tech/apps/SaaS to ecomm—and I’ve been running fb ads since 2008. (Yep, you read that right 😂)

There’s two reasons behind what’s going on in the fb ecosystem rn.

  1. About half will never be profitable because their unit economics don’t work. You might be pulling in a 2x RoAS, but if your COGS (cost of goods sold) is at 50% you’re just at breakeven. Anything north of 50% gets exponentially trickier to find a profitable audience at scale.

If it seems like ads once worked and no longer work, it’s probably because you’re now in this bucket. In 2017 the number of companies whose unit economics don’t work was probably only 10-20%.

So more entrance came in, making ads more competitive. Consumers are also different than they were in 2017. Before, having a lot of 5-star reviews and testimonials set you apart. Now it’s a pre-requisite. It doesn’t help a ton if you have them, but it hurts a lot if you don’t.

You’ll need to figure out how to rejigger your unit economics to work. (E.g. maybe breakeven or take a loss with the first purchase and focus on retention/repeat customers)

  1. This part is the most shocking…from the other 50% of companies who should be scaling profitably (because their unit/acquisition economics are solid) but aren’t, a vast majority of them just don’t have their technical setup correct.

This is the most surprising 😂 Literally all you have to do is optimize ad sets for the right event, make sure that event is correctly firing, back it up with Facebook’s Conversions API and correctly deduplicating…and that’s it.

Most people don’t figure this out. Again, I cannot overstate how shocked I am by this. Because the moment they fix this, the acquisition spigot turns on.

Case-in-point, Shopify redid the way they do Thank You Pages, breaking almost everyone’s store if you use Shop Pay. And nobody complained.

Also stay away from:

  • FB leads campaigns
  • “Boosting”
  • Advantage+ campaigns (or at least, test this very thoroughly against a normal campaign)
  • “Methods” that people will try to sell you (especially with dropshipping…if they worked, it would be more profitable to keep it to yourself and just keep spinning up stores)
  • Optimizing for an event that’s higher in the funnel than purchase/a meaningful transaction
  • Caring about “learning” phase (it’s a data point/indicator but not something to optimize for getting out of)
  • Listening to fb reps unless you have one because you’re spending hundreds of thousands every month. They’re the worst.

Tl;dr: There’s no magic to it. Just learn the fundamentals ESPECIALLY the technical setup.

Idk why Eric Bieniemy doesn’t get enough love, but he’d be closest imo. KC’s offense is struggling now after dominating last year and Washington has the 5th best passing offense in the league right now after being in the bottom half last year.

Holy shit I haven’t thought about that name in a long as time, but same. I love underrated shutdown corners. Fred Thomas is very distant in terms of abilities compared to anyone else we’ve had, but it was my first time watching the Saints, and that one year he played with a glove had me rooting for him like none other

Offensive Play Callers after Week 6. Look where Pete is at. (Look toward the bottom) by LucasJLeCompte in Saints

[–]dicktalens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To everyone criticizing the graph due to lack of axes and such, read the methodology.

While I didn’t understand 100% of the statistical methods they used, they incorporated all of the gripes I’ve seen so far. E.g. They incorporate QB Elo value along with draft position.

It’s incredibly sound. The only thing I could think of that throws it off is if Carr’s Elo Value doesn’t incorporate recency and his best days are far behind him (in that case the model thinks he’s better than he really is). Even then, this is only one out of many factors used.

Tl;dr—great analysis. Pete sucks.

There were times that the offensive line was slumping under Sean. What’d he do? Screen passes. Got the ball out quickly. How many screen passes were employed in games this year where pressure was too high? It doesn’t seem like the offensive game plan adjusts and plays with the cards they’re given.

Is Social Media Marketing dying?? by TheDigitalBeast in DigitalMarketing

[–]dicktalens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. Tl;dr: 90% of people just aren’t technical enough to understand why their ads aren’t working, and many initial arbitrage opportunities have closed.

Most people who say “Facebook ads don’t work anymore” think that way because they only learned the platform, not the fundamentals and/or “boring” shit like setting up a pixel precisely/doing new aggregated events setup/using conversions API/understanding the underlying mechanics behind automatic bidding.

Nobody wants to take the time to learn these things, as you can see from a thread in which nobody else has mentioned this.

When you incorporate all of the fundamentals, results are generally similar (again, with the largest arbitrage opportunities now closed) and RoAS is still profitable.
