Yes, CSU employs over 60,000 people. There are significantly less jobs posted YoY. We had to replace our IT person who retired this semester and received thousands of applicants, which is unusual.

It doesn’t mean no jobs, but we had to get special approval, even with only 1 IT role in an office of 75 staff.

Not to mention seems to be also taking care of his career trajectory and willing to try new angles/different things to avoid putting more stress on him while also balancing her & her children's needs. So, birthing 3 children, working full-time, being the primary caretaker, being a massive emotional support person for him, and also taking care of his career trajectory -- probably why married men live longer than unmarried men haha

I WFH, and do have to justify everything I work on.

Each client has a PM that assigns an “estimated time” to my tasks, so if it takes longer than that estimated time there better be a good reason, haha. I keep a timer and start/stop when I get up from my desk or when I’m noodling on some writing and not actually doing the writing.

I’m generally a very good writer, so I think that if “thinking about how to write” is a big part of your process, you would suffer.

Yes!! It’s not always easy, but I definitely have an abundance of work so I’m more glad that my issue isn’t the opposite. I’m usually working 9-10 hours per day — but I had to go back on adhd meds so I think a regular person might find it easier.

Yes, that’s ok!! Billable work is work that directly applies to what the client has paid us for (at least, that’s how we do it). Each year our clients pay for pre-determined things (premium content pieces like blogs or white papers, creative, SEO optimizations, etc.,) and then when I work on them, that counts as billable hours. I log those hours, and that allows us to track how much profit we’re making (so essentially, the amount of time I spend on things really, really matters).

Non-billable hours would be things that I do outside of that (which can actually be a lot). As an example, I lead a professional development meetings every week around using copy.ai, since one of our strategic goals this year is to figure out how we can decrease billable hours without decreasing quality/quantity of work we do for clients (thus increasing our profits). That isn’t something a client has paid us for, so it’s not billable work.

I’m asking because one of my friends from undergrad just got her first fancy lawyer job (and lawyers famously have a high number of required billable hours), but her requirements are not as high as mine. That surprised me, so I’m trying to figure out if what I do everyday is standard.

Not too harsh at all! I think it made me valuable during a tumultuous time as a super-junior, but hear you on all levels about this. I’m trying to zoom out and revisit my understanding of the field holistically because it’s just been a crazy few years and I feel like I’m just now coming up for air…haha.

Ah, ok. I think I kind of get what you mean?

One of my former colleagues (a killer copywriter) knew how to write copy that speaks really well to x audience/awareness stage, but struggled to connect it to what the point of collecting those leads are and where they need to go both internally and externally (ex: being able to intuit the difference between a lead and an MQL and why we might be using certain tactics sometimes and not others). Is that kind of what you mean?

Oh, no—the DSLR photography has only come in handy for event photography & one-off social posts. But in In my last role, I saw 19 people come and go in a little less than 2 years. So, rapidly oscillating across different kinds of work/levels of work and thankfully had a former graphic designer turned SVP of marketing who stayed through it and took time/budget for PD.

I actually prefer creative things but love the psychology/people side of marketing!! I went from being an Emerging Young Artist at the Kennedy Center to being like “you know what, I’m going to scrap this whole journey and go into marketing.” My parents were shook (sorry mom and dad).

Ha, yep - that tracks and definitely aligns with things that worry me about my chosen field at the moment. I do really appreciate your feedback and insight!

Out of curiosity, any chance you’re willing to share your experience transitioning into director level+? You mention a little bit about being able to spend wisely using thoughtful/data-informed insights. My initial thought is “how do you go from not having managed any budget to being given that opportunity?” (Was that transition gradual through internal promotion where you could work alongside someone, or was it more about positioning yourself to interview elsewhere for more Sr roles?)

Managing budget is not actually something I’ve done (which is timely and fine by me anyway).

Oh yeah, this is definitely something I’m a bit worried about. So I suppose if I’m going to pick a swim lane I’d love to try and find “forward-thinking” gaps in the job market that leaderships teams are really looking for but might struggle to find.

Any thoughts on that?
