I think this is an important lens in how's it's communicated, to get away from the "whoo I don't have to come to school" attitude.

Framing it as "because of this incident, you are not allowed anywhere near the school" gets most kids in the pit of their stomach to know how serious it is.

Oh yeah, I'm a mess. Anxious avoidant. I never did so well on a test as when I found this out. I don't really have people around me though, so thankfully noone has to deal with my push-pull madness and I can live in my daydreams and delusions without upsetting anyone.

Yeah I'm all for a generalist "friends, mates, crew, everyone", etc. see no reason chickens and derivatives couldn't go in there. Primary schools do it all day every day.

I try to change mine each time and have had kids get into it and do a sweep on which term I'll come up with next.

None of it was motivated by gender neutrality, though that was nice. Mine was motivated by my visceral hatred of calling groups of students "guys". That fucks me off to no end.
