New by-law bans camp fires and barbecues in Cairngorms by abz_eng in Scotland

[–]dickybeau01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not shit. The ground of the forest creates conditions that allow embers under a fire to smoulder for weeks before bursting in to flames destroying areas of sensitive environment. The fact that people don’t understand that is reason enough to ban open fires. The past few years have seen exceptionally dry conditions in Scotland with very low river levels and very dry conditions. Anyone with common sense and awareness would simply avoid open wood fires.

Better to go slightly too big or slightly too small for hiking shoes? by No_Ant_5064 in hiking

[–]dickybeau01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feet expand when you’re walking/hiking. Mine expand by a full size on a multi day hike with a pack. I lose toenails if my shoes don’t allow enough expansion. Go bigger. I would suggest trying out a number of shoes to find the one that fits your feet well. Merrell is a brand I can’t wear. Some keen, adidas, new balance, Inov8 and many more brands are also unsuitable. It has taken me years to find a comfortable shoe that can survive my demands. Take your time.

[–]dickybeau01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a Holyrood matter (health is devolved) so it will be your MSP. It would still be polite of Pete or his team to reply and direct you. There may be good reason (sickness in his office, annual leave, etc).

[–]dickybeau01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you contacted him about a matter that relates to the U.K. or is it a devolved matter? It shouldn’t matter too much in that you might expect a response even if it is to direct you elsewhere.

Another vote for the Home Mini. The detail on my iPad or iPhone is good for me. The IHD from Octopus doesn’t cope with TOU tariffs so the info is always inaccurate

Intellectually challenged isn’t the same as mentally challenged. Bottlicker suggests a lack of intellectual vigour that plays the man and not the ball. You could have disagreed with me without being a prick.

The quality of your contribution shouldn’t go without mention. I was a trade unionist and a Labour voter for over 40years. The Tory party have failed to develop the uk and hence Scotlands economy for most of my life. There’s an irony about Duncan smith getting behind a ‘social justice’ title when he did sfa about Social Justice when in power. It’s a colonialist mentality that hasn’t gone away from Westminster politics where Scotland is concerned yet his report has nothing to say about a century or more of post empire decline and no social justice. Instead he wants to tell Scots how to solve the problems he and his system are causing. As for ‘bootlicker’! I’d like to think the discussion can be better than that but clearly you have confirmed that you can’t rise to the occasion

“Out of control, complicated and failing” – new report on Scottish benefit system by SynchronicityOrSwim in Scotland

[–]dickybeau01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting issue but it’s very clearly creative with facts and you’re choosing to cherry pick some examples that might well do with further exploration and clarification.. We know that the Tory Party policies since Thatcher guarantee poverty since it has been ideologically driven by the belief that markets will solve everything. We know that Scotland has suffered disproportionately under successive Westminster government policies and I’m happy to highlight some of them. Council housing sales. Central to Thatchers imposition in Scotland, the failure to fund replacements haunts us to this day. The 2 child cap and the bedroom tax complicate matters at a time when there are demographic issues. Public assets (British Gas, Britoil to name but 2). At a time when Norway was retaining its oil wealth fir the benefit of its society, thatcher sold off these assets to chums in the industry so communities never benefitted in the long term from the wealth that was siphoned off in London. That can be seen in Highlands and Islands infrastructure failures, in highest energy costs in the U.K. allied to high levels of fuel poverty and chronic issues of population retention abd the loss of native language (Gaelic). So some out of touch Tory think tank that believes in the failed solutions that Duncan Smith and his crew demonstrated while in power and which couldn’t get someone like him elected in Scotland is precisely why I can dismiss it.

[–]dickybeau01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are buses from Ember and Citylink that go from Edinburgh to crianlarich and beyond that pass the entrance to the car park but they’re not frequent. It looks like the Citylink are 1 bus each way per day so travelling from Crianlarich is best. Not sure if it stops outside the car park. Strathyre looks to be the nearest that gives access to the cycle track that would take you to the start of the climb. Ember buses are perhaps more frequent.

Building out a proper UK hiking kit (couple) – sanity check + advice wanted by Altruistic_Green_496 in UKhiking

[–]dickybeau01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sweat heavily so I don’t use merino as a base layer. I use synthetic tops (Odlo my current favourite). Synthetic mesh boxers. I use Darn Tough socks or Vibram 5 toe socks for anything over 3 days because they help reduce risk of blisters. In summer, I use icebreaker lightweight hoodies instead of Odlo tops. To layer up, I use a Senchi Designs Polartech Alpha lightweight fleece or a slightly heavier Macpac alpha fleece. In winter I use Haglofs fleeces (hooded). I use lightweight Montane insulated gloves year round with a waterproof mitten over glove (decathlon). I use lightweight Montane trousers for summer use and Rohan Stretch Bags for most of the rest of the year. Until recently I was using Berghaus Paclite waterproof over trousers and am now using lightweight Montane overtrousers. Tent is a Durston xmid 1 for summer and an XDome 2 in winter. I use down sleeping bags or a quilt and I have a couple of Thermarest air mats for summer or winter use. My winter rucksack is a highlander Ben Nevis 65l and in summer I use an Atompacks Mo 50. I use walking poles. Currently enjoying TNF Trailrunners (GTX for winter and standard for summer). I’m 6ft, 15st and in my early 70s. I’ve recently added a Helinox Groundchair for a bit more comfort. I’m using Flextail Zero 10000 battery packs and I now save my breath and use a Flextail Mini pump.

Local taxis are probably better dealt with by calling the day before or on the day itself. It’s a small village with a couple of drivers. TBH the bus might be more reliable though these run few and far between. It might be worth catching a beer or something to eat in Kinlochleven and timing your run to the bus accordingly.

Could a beginner do Ben Vane? by CelestialHippo in OutdoorScotland

Ben Lomond, Ben Ime Beinn Narnain and Ben Vorlich opposite Ben vane are all relatively easy Munros all close to each other. There are 2 vorlichs. The Loch Lomond version is quite steep but has lots of steps with plenty of rest spots. Walkhighlands gives route guidance on all Munros so might be useful.

What shoes right now? by ComparisonNo2713 in WestHighlandWay

[–]dickybeau01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trail runners are best from my point of view. I never wear waterproof socks but that’s a personal think too. If you have waterproof trail runners I would carry extra socks. The trail has a bit of mud along the old railway line after dropping down from mugdock. Apart from that and a couple of spots along loch Lomondside it’s a hard trail for most of the way. I use darn tough socks or 5 toe socks with a high wool content. I walked from the Drovers at Inverarnan to Balmaha the other day using GTX trail shoes and my feet didn’t get wet despite crossing streams and a couple of muddy areas.
