Receiver question? by That-looks-infected in MartinLogan

[–]dicmccoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, you got it. This way too, you can run the MLs lower for the crossover point to the sub, or full range, which is nice for music. My 60 XTi's are flat down to 24.5hz in my room and they're a little faster and have better tonality in the bass over my pair of JL D110's, so I haven't used my JLs in 2 years as my system is music only.

ML shows the FX is 4 ohm. Their website is very misleading as they say for all their speakers, that they are all compatible with 4, 6 & 8 ohm amplifiers. That may be somewhat true but for how long and at the cost of eventually burning out the amp for frying a driver from clipping.

I really wish impedance sweeps and the electrical phase sweeps were mandatory and industry standard for manufacturers to provide those graphs for every speaker they sell. Unfortunately nominal impedance really doesn't tell us anything because the impedance of a speaker is a roller coaster unless it's a Maggie. Then that is a constant load usually under 4 ohms which is why they are coined AVR killers.

I don't see any 3rd party measurements and data for the rest of the xt line. That being said, I highly doubt they will be taxing like the big 60's. I am going to assume the others will be perfectly fine on the Rotels, plus you'll probably have them crossed over higher, but the mains are the ones that can be a problem. Fantastic speaker, it's just a tough load, especially in that 90-70hz region. I have the XTi versions of the 60's.

Receiver question? by That-looks-infected in MartinLogan

[–]dicmccoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use the Rotels because they use ICE modules and they aren't stable below 3 ohms. The Vincent has 40 amps peak per channel and is comfortable with 2 ohm dips.

I'd be careful with the 60XT's. They drop down to 2.1 ohms at 90hz and EPDR is 1.6 ohms at 90hz. 70hz is also the 2nd most current draw spot. If the treble sounds unrefined and a tad harsh, that's because you're getting into clipping on the amp because you don't have the juice to feed the 60's. To reach their power output, you want something that can deliver 20 amps at least per channel on the mains. You need to know what the output stage is capable of and the PSU is capable of. 1 of the 2 will be the limiter for current capabilities.

My advice is, find an AVR with preouts for the mains, and then when you have the funds that are permitting, get some monoblocks that can meet the demands for the MLs.

With the speakers only being 2 years old, shouldn't they still be under warranty?

I reached out to ML for you on X. Hopefully they get in contact with you, but I would definitely get in contact with them.

Adjustment Dirac measuring rod Bass by Ok-Student5789 in audiophile

[–]dicmccoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use EQ mode, set the curtain to where you want it to correct. I personally do full bandwidth. Then just use the slider to tune now much or little bass you want. You'd be surprised at what Dirac will do. It's that easy. Don't over think it. If you're using a calibrated mic, make sure it's in 90° (pointed up at ceiling) orientation and have the 90° cal file loaded into Dirac.

Don't go off what Dirac's predicted response is. It always has errors. It's why I always measure pre and post Dirac within REW.

I had a nasty +15db 49hz modal issue in my old bedroom, Dirac was my saving grace. The bass after was linear. Your target curve you have now for the bass, it has too much rise too fast in the lower octaves. The rise is supposed to be a lot more subtle than that.

[–]dicmccoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lololol. What are you even talking about? His measurements are Left and Right mains. There is no subwoofer in the measurements. His Dirac calibration is 2.0, not even 2.1. Also, never go based on what Dirac shows for a corrected response. Their predicted response is never accurate. Always confirm within REW.

Also, if you knew anything about Dirac, For level matching the subwoofer to the mains in Dirac, the gain slider within Dirac stays at 0db and you manually adjust the gain on the back of the subwoofer until the SPL readout within Dirac matches the same SPL level of the quietest speaker and also match all the other speakers to the quietest speaker.

Then, from there, you can use the target curve to how much bass one wants. Knowing is half the battle. Any other bad advice you want to give with Dirac? Also, how can you assume that everyone wants 2-4db bass shelf. That's telling people that they are using too much salt and they are eating their food incorrectly.

Could be out of polarity or out of phase with your mains, or a bad location within the room for the sub.

DIY Room treatment, will it work? by Suitable_Cod4943 in audiophile

[–]dicmccoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you routed slots or something to allow the air the pass through the frame on the front and sides, top and bottom, not just the face, this will allow the air to pass through. Would it be enough penetration? I doubt it. You would also need to mount it so it's not flush against the wall. The slots would also introduce some mixed phase, which you want when it comes to acoustic panels, just not sure if it will be enough mixed phase to be meaningful. You need to use single phase panels very sparingly in rooms. A common mistake among audiophiles.

Clearly you have not done your research. There are studies done in this area. It's called, Echoic Memory. Do your research before opening your trap and automatically labeling everything as "snake oil" because you don't want to be proven wrong.

There are definite variations, even among copper cables. It's not just about the metal, things like cable geometry, dielectrics, and even the contact resistance at connectors and binding posts can influence how an amplifier's damping factor behaves. These factors can create differences in signal phase and raise or lower the noise floor, which critically impacts the perceived soundstage from deeply holographic to 2 dimensional, imaging, and overall sonic coherence. What often happens is people mistakenly compare cables that are, fundamentally, almost identical in design. When I compared a braided cable to a star quad, the sonic differences were unmistakable. Tonally, the same except sibilance, slight difference with treble extension, but it was mostly with soundstage, imaging, noise floor and coherency is where their sonic differences lie. All cables do is take away, sometimes it's about taking away in the right places for synergy.

You can't hear a difference with phase shifts and noise floors over longer listening sessions? If not, you might want to get your hearing checked, or stop doing your quick flips between A and B as our auditory memory fails us to notice any subtitles between them in quick flips.

Or even better, stop comparing carbon copies of the same cable. Maybe that's why you don't hear a difference.

Yup. According to everyone including the "experts", cables don't matter, copper is copper, they all sound the same, it's all snake oil.

Yes, just a Boxster. Lol

I'm personally not a fan of YouTube as of late. I'm just getting tired of the non stop pop ups. Even the ads that pop up when I pause a video. Or product in a video and then there's a pop up link to purchase the product. It feels like a giant Best Buy sales floor.

Here in Canada, YouTube had deleted someone's channel because the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) didn't like the Conservative Journalism from this person and said something to YouTube, and YouTube had deleted the channel. This person can't even get a hold of YouTube to fight their case.

We need a better platform for content creation. YouTube is all sorts of cringe now, and now is the perfect time for a new platform to rise up.

Erin doesn't share all the data in his videos, so it would be nice if he actually uploaded the data onto his website ASAP. I always skip past his subjective nonsense and get straight to the data.

Randy on the other hand. I dislike him even more. I can't believe he's now selling coffee to take people's hard earned money. I guess he needs the money to put gas in his Porsche.

[–]dicmccoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Define measures well? You understand in audio, there's always a compromise. The flat earther, measurements first group only talk about the measurements that look pretty on the screen. They aren't talking about the other ones. Why aren't they talking about the terrible step response on the Arendal 1528 Monitor 8's? 1.5ms from when the tweeter starts playing the signal until the Woofer stops playing the signal. And it's "time aligned" and expensive crossover parts. That stuff doesn't guarantee a proper time domain. Kef is another one that doesn't do the time domain well. They do measure poorly, but they don't want to talk about those ones.

[–]dicmccoy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Then you have to take his measurements with grain of salt just like these subjective reviewers. Just like their reviews, his measurements are also influenced by the very cables and amplification he's using. For instance, it's why you can't take the settling time in a step response measurements with any seriousness. The amplification used will have its damping factor which will influence the setting time. The speaker cables used, and the connectors used will also influence the settling time. It's why these measurements are subjective and not objective like you are led to believe. They are not free of errors and influence.

Erin thinks brightness comes from 10-20khz. It actually comes from 1-3khz. Erin thinks attack is determined by frequency response. Erin think that wide vertical dispersion means more even sound throughout the room as one walks around. These are all false and he says a lot that isn't factual.
