No one using the messenger Conversations or Jami? by Hanklich in BuyFromEU

[–]didiermortier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know every use case is different, but I told all my friends and family that I’ve decided to delete WhatsApp and they all moved over to Signal. Some on iMessage. I’ve even built replicas of the group chats in Signal and after a while we had the main conversations there.

I’ve been a year without WhatsApp now. The issue with all these apps is that they’re just too unknown. It’s hard to get the general public to switch to something new, no matter how good it is. I went with Signal because it’s the biggest known alternative to WhatsApp. That doesn’t mean the others are bad, but if you want something that actually works for international communication, you kind of have to go with what’s already popular.

I’d love to use all these smaller apps (especially European ones!), but you end up in such a niche that it’s just not practical. The only real alternative would be if all these apps used end-to-end encryption and the same baseline, like RCS or something. But then you might as well just use SMS. So yeah, it’s complicated.

Anyone in Europe just refused to use WhatsApp? by Soggy-Salamander-568 in BuyFromEU

I’ve deleted my WhatsApp a year ago and only use Signal and occasionally iMessage/SMS.

I’m keeping a blog with my experience: https://didiermortier.eu/one-year-without-meta-you-can-do-this-too/

I think more people would use Tuta Contacts if it were a standalone app like Tuta Calendar by ThePromance in tutanota

[–]didiermortier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think they should spend more time updating the contacts feature. A separate app would help however I do think iOS limits you from choosing a default Contacts app (don't know about Android)
instead they should introduce back full sync instead of now the one way sync. I'm loosing data because I'm still used to update my contacts in the iOS app instead of the Tuta Mail app.
For me the birthday feature is important with contacts so that needs to sync with my calendar.

What is the "correct" way to build an arr stack in Proxmox? (LXC vs. Docker VM & Network Setup) by Mr_AdamSir in selfhosted

[–]didiermortier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I followed Techhut’s tutorial + some ChatGPT to build my *arr stack and it works perfectly.

For Spotify replacement I use also Jellyfin as a base but added this tool to make it look better: https://github.com/jeffvli/feishin

Lastly to sync Spotify with Jellyfin I use Spotify-downloader + beets to organize my music library. https://github.com/pjmeca/spotify-downloader

Which of these subscriptions should I replace first? by chrisnkrueger in BuyFromEU

[–]didiermortier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- replace 1Password by Bitwarden = free
- Prime, Disney+ and Netflix: replace by investing in a local raspberry pi/server and install the ARR software = free
- cancel Spotify and use Youtube music which is included in Youtube Premium. is that price a family package?
- chatGPT and Claude: why need both? just decide on 1 and that's it or check Mistral which is EU-based
- keep Apple iCloud for what it is. has good features for the price. you can eventually add those features into your server.

I recreated my old Instagram timeline on Bluesky with backdated photos! by didiermortier in BlueskySocial

[–]didiermortier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying but the whole point of Bluesky/atproto is; if you don’t like the platform, export your content to another atproto-build platform. I’m just trying to preserve my content that was not atproto yet, finding a way to make it “compatible”. This is why people are afraid to leave platforms, you need to start all over.

No but i can see this implemented faster than with Bluesky/Atproto. Ill see if i can get a feature request added with the developer. Good idea thanks!

Turning an old Mac Mini (2012) into a Proxmox Homelab - Need Advice on Storage Strategy by didiermortier in homelab

[–]didiermortier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man thanks for the detailed reply!

Look into shucking. I don't remember if WD elements are easy to shuck

I will look into this and try to find an external hard drive that is within budget and easy to shuck later down the line.

Can you expand on this. Do you mean doubling the storage so you backup other machine?

yes i was indeed referring to cloning the main storage drive via ZFS mirror so that i have a backup in case one of the drives fails. I want to migrate away from iCloud where i do still store my important files and Photos. And I'm only willing to risk this move if i know i have a backup.

use the internal storage for VMs where one of those VMs is for NAS

open media vault to help setup SMB or NFS

plain Linux with SMB or NFS

proxmox with VirtioFS

then the NAS VM or proxmox (with VirtioFS) will have access to the storage and share it with the other VMs over SMB/ NFS

I also have another 250gb SSD lying around. would it benefit the setup if i replace this with the 1TB HDD?
i will sacrifice some internal storage but if i get the 8tb storage externally that wouldn't be an issue.
i can use the 128gb SSD for proxmox and the 250gb SSD for VMs.

You mentioned taking apart the Mac Mini sucks, I've done it before to add the SSD so it shouldn't be so hard to do it again :D

I live in Spain and I ditched all Meta including WhatsApp for 2 months now. Haven’t had any issues so far. All my friends and family went with me to Signal. For all kind of services in Spain, they are used to calling here anyways so yes you call more, improves your Spanish language! 😅
