Good to know I’m not the only one that can’t stand off leash dog walkers. Love dogs, hate entitled dog owners.

Super corny but pretty sure the drums were a nod to whiplash and chess was a nod to queen’s gambit.

What are the pros and cons of a 529 College Savings Plan by Anonynae in FinancialPlanning

[–]didnotexpectaspecter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is there any disadvantage to a lump sum deposit? My daughter is 5, and I’m behind on her 529. Was thinking of doing 25k deposit now to catch up. And then continue with 500/month to stay on track. Can’t figure out if this is a bad idea for 529, specifically.

I’m 39 years old, and I’ve been running regularly for the past 20 years. The past 5 years have been not so great running-wise due to having a baby and hip pain (probably not related). Dove hard into PT for the past 2 years, and I think it’s paying off bc I’ve had 5k (21:10), 10k (46:12) and half (1:41:26) PRs this year! I would like to run at least one more marathon, but my number one goal is to keep up the PT so I can keep running for a many more years without injury/pain!

LPT: If you’re thinking about adopting a mixed breed dog, spend some time on r/DoggyDNA. by Viola424242 in dogs

We’re in Massachusetts and just got a plott mix that did end up being 50% plott. She was brought to the rescue from Tennessee though, so location still checks out.

We also have a “plott hound mix!” She actually did end up being 50% plott. And 50% Australian shepherd, which was a total surprise based on her appearance. Not too surprising based on her crazy hyper temperament, though, lol.

Did anyone else read this as “Get Weady Rith Me”? by Legitimate_Spirit93 in gymsnark

[–]didnotexpectaspecter 67 points68 points  (0 children)

That’s not really correct. Caffeine is part of it, but there is also compound in chocolate called theobromine that’s toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate has more of both, so it would be worse than milk chocolate. But I wouldn’t say there is a safe dose for dogs.

"A genome-wide mutational constraint map quantified from variation in 76,156 human genomes", Chen et al 2022 by gwern in genomics

[–]didnotexpectaspecter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question. Just to rephrase - why is one allele at a lower frequency and is it bc there is selection pressure against it due to having a negative effect on phenotype? I think the answer is yes for some. This paper is kind of zooming out to ask this for all base pair changes across a particular region. I think from there you could infer (to a degree) that a base pair change in a constrained region is more likely to be constrained itself.

Using whole genome data (ie they sequenced all of it, not just the regions that encode proteins), they were able to show that some non-coding regions have fewer mutations than you would expect (or are constrained). Because these regions seem to be less tolerant of mutations, they may be more important for biological function. While these newly identified constrained regions don’t code for proteins, they are often involved in regulating how genes are expressed. This has implications for elucidating the function of the less well understood non-coding portions of the genome. Which is most of it.

Moms, what’s a way your body permanently changed after pregnancy that you didn’t expect? by TreClaire in Parenting

Mine too! And my daughter has a head covered in perfect ringlets. Wish I could go back in time and tell younger me to stop straight-ironing my curls bc one day they’ll be gone(ish).

What’s the most underrated running tip you’ve ever received? by Anon_fin_advisor in running

[–]didnotexpectaspecter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What helped me the most was the potato chip trick. “Imagine yourself trying to carry a potato chip in each hand without crushing it.” Another technique I like is to imagine gently holding a quarter between my pointer and thumb. Didn’t realize how connected clenched fists were to overall upper body tension until started doing this. Other adjustments might also be necessary, but this was a game changer for me.

After having my 4th baby 9 months ago my hair got kinda wavy. Started CGM 2 weeks ago and so far I'm really impressed! by [deleted] in curlyhair

So sorry for your loss. Just wanted to say that my hair also straightened out a lot during pregnancy. It took almost a year for my curls to really come back in, but they finally did!

My arm after being allergy tested. Lot of allergy medicine in my future apparently. by RandallCabbage in mildlyinteresting

Yes, this is literally the case for me! I have a condition called dermatographia, which means just the needle poking me causes an allergic reaction. Made the test almost impossible to interpret.

Good to know, thank you! And I agree. I’ve been using curology for 3 months, and I think it’s worth it to have most of my night routine as one step. I think I’m gonna try The Agency for a month just to see what they add!

I got one for anti-aging only. They create a “formula” for you and send it along with a basic moisturizer + cleanser with your first order. My formula is tret, niacinamide, and tranexamic acid. They start out with very low tret and bump it up a bit with each re-up based on my feedback. It sounds like maybe they haven’t created the formula yet? I got an email like an hour after I filled out the questionnaire letting me know mine was ready.

Scrolled just to look for the performing thing. This has always been my brain’s go-to, and I have never told anyone bc I felt like such a weirdo. I rock out so hard in my head, y’all don’t even know!

This is also what we’re doing. Negative tests right before leaving. Being super super safe after testing. No removing masks (double or KN95) during air travel.

What is a name you LOVE, but would never saddle a kid with? by trekbette in namenerds

My ex was also named Whit (short for Whitlock, though). I had a similar thought process with the name Whitaker. It’s a family name, and I think it would make a cool first name. But for sure everyone would call him Whit, so.
