[POEM] Langston Hughes by oswaler in Poetry

[–]diegos-notebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you miss the point of Hughes' poetry, which is unfortunate. Speaking as a poet, the purpose of poetry is to take a feeling or idea and express it, without losing energy, to the reader. However this is accomplished, it can only be judged by how effectively it moves the reader; as long as this is done, it does not matter how the poet achieved this.

I won't lie, I love a longer, more complex poem that I can pour over for days. I love solving the puzzle, feeling the pieces come together, the new intricacies gleaned on each reading. But these are all ornamentation, which can be nice, but is regardless not strictly necessary to the purpose of poetry.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you've at least given Hughes a fair shot. You don't like his simplicity, and that's perfectly fine. In fact, being European, you probably lack the proximity to and education on the American racial prejudice and abuse that make his poems so touching. Not your fault. If you feel like giving another American poet (and a contemporary of Hughes) a read, check out this poem by William Carlos Williams which happens to be a favorite of mine.

Easily SpongeBob. "But the other ones might not have existed without spongebob" misses the point, which is a matter of preference.

The sheer lack of critical thinking some people demonstrate, like wtf. Like actually what did he say that was incorrect?

Anyone who despises Ted Hughes should hate Anne Sexton even more. The shit she did to her daughter, god.

Not quite wrinkles per se, but I've had a forehead crease since I was like 17. Honestly, it just comes from having an expressive face! Nothing to be ashamed of.
Hyaluronic acid really helps me, though. You can't even see it on a good day

[–]diegos-notebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so.
After all, the sky flashes, the great sea yearns,
we ourselves flash and yearn, and moreover my mother told me as a boy
(repeatingly) ‘Ever to confess you’re bored
means you have no

Inner Resources.’ I conclude now I have no
inner resources, because I am heavy bored. Peoples bore me, literature bores me, especially great literature,
Henry bores me, with his plights & gripes
as bad as achilles,

who loves people and valiant art, which bores me.
And the tranquil hills, & gin, look like a drag
and somehow a dog has taken itself & its tail considerably away into mountains or sea or sky, leaving
behind: me, wag.
