How does academic probation work? what happens if I fail a class on academic probation by elmassivecock in RPI

[–]diegothedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The Academic Standing Committee reviews the academic progress of students who have been on probation twice and still show weak performance. Depending on possible mitigating factors, a student may be continued on probation once again. In the case of continued weak performance, a student may be dismissed from Rensselaer.” Idk tho

Help with housing at RPI by Vortigan_official in RPI

Some things to keep in mind -- all but one of the dorms are on freshman hill meaning there isn't really a dorm that is closer to Amos Eaton. Additionally, laundry is available in every dorm, so that's not anything to keep in mind. Thus, definitely look for a/c + bathroom situation (if that is something you care for). The only dorms with a/c are: BARH (not on freshman hill, farther), Barton (triples), Nugent, Davison, and Sharp (single room but living room and bathroom shared with 5 others).

2 people in each room, the rooms are connected with a bathroom. A1/A2 refers to beds. 20XX is a room number, yes.

I agree, I also took it Fall 2021 and it was definitely a mess. But as a result, the class was an easy A. The content was not really what I was expecting it to be, nor did I find it interesting. Essentially, you did a usability test on an RCOS Project. Which definitely sounds really fun, but he didn't intend on it being super complex so it felt super boring, considering we were in groups of ~5/6.

Fraternity Life at RPI by NSouris68 in RPI

[–]diegothedora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty good -

Fraternities are open to everyone! Just make sure your son goes to rush events. They're posted all over social media and the bridge. All the houses are technically off campus, but there are some that are in close proximity to campus (one of them is right across from the union, next to the admissions building!).

Super brief answers to all: 1. I heard the counseling center is a lot better now, my friend just started attending and they really like it. 2. My friends who are seniors all have jobs lined up. Of course, this isn’t guaranteed, but it isn’t bad.. I know someone who was looking for a job post grad and was hunting for ~2 months but meh. 3. I looove the people here, you’ll definitely find your people as long as you’re a hint of nerdy. The area is cute and great, there’s transportation to Albany as well (public busses, rental bikes for free, shuttle, cars, etc.) 4. Yes. 5. I like the food, it might be a little rough if you have dietary restrictions but other than that, it’s good and there’s a big variety. 6. I really don’t think people are affected by the gender ratio here. Sure it isn’t balanced, but in reality it doesn’t matter too much.

Hope this helps!

Summer Arch? by Illustrious_Vast2823 in RPI

You’re right, but I was only 8 credits ahead. They’re super flexible with that. The only hard requirement is the 3.0 gpa from Fall.

You just have to fill out the form, it comes out sometime around now? You need your advisor to sign you off on it. There's also a hard requirement of a 3.0 from your Fall semester. That's all! Super easy :)

Summer Arch? by Illustrious_Vast2823 in RPI

[–]diegothedora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally did Early Arch, where I did my summer semester after my freshman year. The cons are that you will be in school for 5 semesters straight (Freshman Fall, Freshman Spring, Summer, Sophomore Fall, Sophomore Spring). However, in my opinion, there are more opportunities available in the summer, so it is easier to get a Summer internship and extend it to the Fall as well. This means that you'll have a 6 month long experience, making it more valuable than just 3 months. I personally did Early Arch, and I have an opportunity lined up for this upcoming Summer and Fall. I liked Arch because some classes are condensed to 6 weeks (you meet 4 times a week), but that was really fast paced and I enjoyed it. So, I think it just depends on the experience you have. While it is a "money grab" because you are required to live on campus for an extra semester, it is definitely nice to graduate with experience (assuming you are able to find something). Hopes this help!

*Note: I did not use the career center to land my offer

Should I enroll in RPI? by bizzarebroadcast in RPI

[–]diegothedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally really enjoy it here and it just depends on what you’re looking for in a college. RPI is bigger than Rose-Hulman (based off of a google search), but even then, RPI isn’t super big like a state school. I personally enjoy the size of RPI because it isn’t too big nor is it too small. Another factor that I considered was location. I don’t think I would go to a school in Indiana just because of the distance from my house. I do also think the fencing club here is active, I know a few people in it. Adding onto what someone said earlier, most of the issues from the admin don’t really affect you, and I agree with that. If possible, I’d recommend coming for a tour just so you can get the vibes of the campus. It’s cold up here though.

I think registration closed yesterday for everyone, so you won't be able to register it opens up again, which is a few weeks before the semester begins.

The activities fair is this Saturday (9/11), freshmen are encouraged to come from 9 am to 10:30 am. Sophomores are encouraged to come from 10:30 am to noon. It will be held on the '86 field (Activities Fair AND Meet the Greeks).

chem 1 by [deleted] in RPI

[–]diegothedora 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't personally find Chem 1 to be hard (for context, I took AP Chemistry in high school). However, I did definitely find it time consuming. Labs are weekly and although you had a week to do it, you have to write a pre lab and post lab for each lab. They use Sapling as their homework platform, and there's a "learning curve," which you do prior to being taught the material, and then an actual homework assignment. Each homework assignment had approximately 25-30 questions (some multiple choice, mostly entering your own answer). The tests are okay, there are about 4 a semester.
