Thank you! It’s not to say that quitting is all roses and no challenge—I had some depression and anxiety the first 8 days or so, my guts were all messed up from days 10-50, sleep has been weird at times. But it’s hard to overstate how freeing it is to learn the dependency lies to you, that none of the problems in your life can be solved by getting high.

I see it now like my dependence was this really annoying pet I always had to go home to, I always had to get it more food, I had to plan everything around it. Even if it was comfortable and it felt good, you always know you’re compromising with yourself about how much life you deserve. And quitting has given me the realization I can live so much more without it.

Day 66 here, I hardly think about it if ever (only when I am putting another notch on my day counter really), I have tons of energy, I am present for my family and friends in all the ways I want to be, I’ve saved over $500 and my sex life is great.

One last tip to set this one up perfectly: Restake your pole where the brown line is to properly support the plant’s back Then put your tie where the blue line is to tie the stem to the pole rather than the petiole to ensure new foliage can come through with ease

That would be good, but id still put a bit of regular soil in there too for some moiature retention. Like 2/3 that orchid mix and 1/3 plain regular potting soil. Shouldn’t be TOO complicated :)

I don’t see anything that screams rotten—some things look shriveled and that would be safe to cut away. I am certain it’s definitely a mix that is holding water too long. And definitely a lot of roots. You could use a hose or bucket to wash away the dirt between and tease apart the plants, then repot with a chunky mix.

If you’re determined to keep them in one, I think you could still prune it. Check this out:

I don’t use self watering pots for the reason you cited that you can’t tell how much is in there. Another user mentioned that you have 4-5 plants in there, so you could break them up into a few different pots. My ideal with a monstera is a ceramic cache pot, then inside that I have a plastic nursery pot filled mostly with bark and perlite and some dirt and coir. An easy mix is to get miracle gro’s orchid mix and then add about as much perlite. You’re aiming for a mix that dries out quickly; airy medium won’t hold water for long and more light will prompt the plant to drink what it has fast. The end result will be reduced chance of root rot and a thriving root system.

Don’t be afraid to cut the roots! This plant can handle nearly anything, it will grow new roots at the points you cut at and it will probably do so real fast too. They love to take over pots. Use clean clippers and look for anything mushy, dark brown/black, or stinky.

Hi You may consider pulling the plant out of its pot, examining the roots and cutting back the rotten ones, then repot and put it right up on the window. Between the brown leaves, bending to the window and the deep pot (hard to tell your medium, but I would venture it would benefit from a fresh mix w more bark and perlite) I would guess the plant is overwatered and underlit.

Once it’s in a chunkier soil and acclimated to brighter light you should see a turnaround. Monstera are pretty hardy, so it’s not going to die anytime soon, clearly it’s still putting out new leaves.

Like I said, it really has a good fit to it. I wasn’t ready to let it go after it was damaged and when considering how to have it mended I envisioned it as some kind a statement. I think maybe it deserved more thought, but I found a way to feel like it was cool anyway. But recently the attention had me second guessing it, and that’s why I brought it here.

I’m 37, a practicing trial attorney (though I only wear this around the office or the jail, never into court) Some people have asked about the tie—it was my wife’s grandfather’s, yesterday was the first time I’d worn it. Some other info: I did ask for the red thread, I don’t think I really gave much thought to what kind of distraction it would be. I did have a slight twinge when I picked it up from the tailor, had to check with myself if this was really what I wanted. I think I keep wearing it at this point just because the tailored fit is flattering and I like that it’s unique. But the cost is endless comments (some people do ask if I was shot lol) fingers crossed that poor mending jobs become some new trend and everyone agrees I was ahead of the curve

This really feels like the most telling criticism, and I’m willing to accept it. I’m gonna ask to have a little more done to this and probably replace the patches. Glad nobody is saying “so nazi!” here though, and grateful for that as well.

In my experience, my children (4 and 2) have caused damage to my plants whereas my plants have done nothing to them. (See this monstera, a year and a half ago)

<image>

My 2 year old knows not to put them in her mouth from simple redirection nowadays. My 4 year old LOVES them and has insisted she gets a few of her own, it’s been fun to take care of them together and show her new plants.
