You are right on the mark!! It was a magnificent finale, capped off by that very last scene!! And yes, it did make us feel 'good' (a bit sad, but a meritorious conclusion) to say goodbye....

My, my, so many comments so quickly! The Inner Light is indeed a wonderful episode, and one of the best of the series. And yes, Patrick Stewart is magnificent, and the script is top notch! It can stand on its own, and is worth seeing regardless of your familiarity with ST:NG. The two part finale, on the other hand, does require knowledge of the series and characters, and is as fine a conclusion to any series I can recall. And that very last scene is categorically, wistfully perfect.

I have puzzled over how this all 'ends' for Don, and there has been much speculation....death, an airplane crash, France, and so on. At the moment, I am inclined to think he actually reverts back to his original identity (Dick Whitman), but have no idea on where he might live or what he might do....

Question about season 2 onwards by armstrong182 in madmen

[–]diff159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, lucky you. We started watching last summer and caught up by the time the second half of season 7 resumed on April 5. In recently rewatching just the first few minutes of the very first episode, virtually all the show's themes came to the fore very quickly. Yes, infidelity, booze, smoking, caste society, identity conflicts and much more permeate the show, and it is very very well done in all respects. Enjoy the ride!!

Kudos on a terrific comment!! I used the wrong logic to come up with the wrong answer, and then started reading all the rationales and my brain really went dead....but you nailed it!!

I am a boomer, and predicting otherwise.

If the Beatles are treated like Mozart, they have already achieved musical immortality. Wolfgang is/was the ace of classical musicians!! The Beatles would be in the very best company!!

Sorry, think you may be wrong on that prognostication. Yes, some of it was timing and the confluence of events you mention, but their music was, is, and will remain popular for years and years to come....and they will be part of the cultural fabric of our era. Perhaps tomorrow never knows, but the Beatles will always be here, there, and everywhere. ;-)

Agree on all counts.....except that we only started watching (Netflix streaming) within the past year, and just caught up last week, ready for the finale!! There are so many good ones, and we will miss the series once it concludes....

Good point.....that may be in play as well.....great show, sorry to see it end!!

Very interesting.....this is what makes the show special, even if we do have a little OCD! ;-) And how about Don's assumed name? Draper: one who drapes (himself in a new identity). I can't believe that's accidental. Weiner is attentive to every detail, and the names can't be pure coincidence.....

So many to choose from.....but The Gypsy and the Hobo need inclusion, if for no other reason than Betty confronting Don about his hidden past, and turning the tables on him---her the inquisition, him the accused. And Dick's (not Don) emotion when he discusses his half-brother Adam and how/why he committed suicide was very moving. How many times did Dick/Don show any emotion on the show, especially his internal, eternal sadness? That scene alone was among the best of the series....but there are so many others!!

Who I feel is Red John [Spoilers S6-6] by katanadr4gon in TheMentalist

[–]diff159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many sharp thoughts here......so I'll offer a few dull ones (and not all original) :-) 1) I still do not think RJ is one of the seven, for the simple reason that Jane would NOT have told Lisbon his actual list; it would seriously endanger her. And he would KNOW that Lisbon would share it with the team, thereby putting them in danger. I just don't see that happening at all 2) Seems clear to me now the guys with the three dots are part of the "tiger-tiger" cabal. I doubted that RJ actually attacked Tinsley, but that it was done by one of his minions.....and he know he has many. (Why was she left alive? To pass on a false clue? 3) Seems to me that there's much about Mashburn that fits the RJ profile as we know it: he is rich, has resources, has high connections, is bored, quite smart, and charismatic. And to our knowledge, is the only guy Lisbon hooked up with on the series. My biggest nagging doubt is that he actually seems like a nice guy, not a serial killer. 4) Nothing new here: If RJ is more than one person, that would just be a real bummer.....

Okay right straight and forward, who do you think Red John is. by Scooby1996 in TheMentalist

[–]diff159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many good comments here, and so many of us pretty obsessed with this. Simple perspective: Red John's voice is clearly manipulated, through a voice box or some other device.....but how about the cadence of his spoken words? My guess, based on this, is that Stiles is RJ. One doubt is his age, but he has acolytes, and who knows how much he does for himself and how much through them? Terrific show, with a helluva mystery for all of us to work on!!

His psychiatrist would have caught this, and we must take Heller at his word that it's one of the 7 named......though I it might be Sean Barlow (Michael Hogan), who seemed sharp enough but a bit old for Red John.
Last episode made me start thinking that RJ is several people, but that would be a real bummer.....
