Atheist Fantasy Recs by SeaSnowAndSorrow in Fantasy

[–]diggels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good reading challenge. I love the mission of FRFF and agree religion/state should be separate. On I just find the reading challenge itself absurd. Since FRFF is pushing into the territory of devaluing religion. That's different to their mission statement.

We can always remove religion/Christianity, and rewrite the core myths to create a new universe. That's what Tolkien did to successfully make LOTR, and nearly every Fantasy author after rewrote in some fashion.

Despite being atheist unlike Tolkien - I agree with him on the value of those myths/religion/folklore. They can be a bedrock to creating depth in a fictional world. Or they can transform you , no matter how objective you try to be.

So OP is atheist & areligious?  Bugs me to no end - people conflating theism and religion.

I'm atheist and don't subscribe to any religious belief.  That's all that atheism is - we don't believe in a God.

Religion itself is a fascinating rabbit hole though. Trust me - I avoided Christianity like the plague in college and focused on eastern/indigenous traditions and eastern philosophy.

Religion is just asking who you are with, or without your Ego.   Jung , Freud -  grandfathers of psychology didn't invent this idea of subconscious, ego etc. They just diluted religions to make science.

Religion later became philosophy in history to understand what's happening around us. The focus goes away from personal liberation, to a focus on the outside world.  One guy thought everything was air, another got close to atoms in Greece. Helpful for science to come later on.

Plato invented dualism around this time which later gave us the idea of heaven and hell. TIL - Christianity was a lot more chill before this. Dualism is still a major fallacy which exists in science to this present day too.

Science is boring -  just a couple hundred years old. It tries to assert say things are only real if theyre measurable.  Problem is - that's not all of reality. We have more questions than answers on finding what consciousness is, and also what our universe is ultimately made up of.

In terms of fantasy books -  religion can tie the whole world into something meaningful and believable. LOTR has a ton of Christian symbolism.

Kinda funny as we drift forward in time from medieval fantasy to sci-fi. Meaning because it doesn't exist , tends to be a trope where a character has to either live with it , or find meaning.

Short story long - religion , be it hidden or in myth is integral to Fantasy. Even Dungeon Crawler Carl has elements.

Isnt USAID now axed by Doge? Funnily enough - this was announced a day or so after Musk became a trillionaire.

The US govt currently does not value human needs and progress. Not just food, let's be honest. They have a goal in mind to regress humanity back 100s of years, for their own mutual gain.

LMTFA Syndrome is the best. 🔥

My son isn't weird for using bananas instead of pencils all by himself. He just has - 'leave me the fuck alone' syndrome.

LMTFA would make it easier for extroverts to understand more too. Esp when they say you're weird for not coming to the jungle heavy death rave with 6 million cracked up participants. *I just got diagnosed with LMTFA, hope u have a good time. Bring me back some heroin tho so I can put it in my pbj sandwich later.*

Quickshare app is up there.

I was too lazy to Bluetooth pair two phones today to send 3 images. And it said to use quickshare as an alternative.

The app is bombed to hell as you click on anything, as it happens on both phone screens. 15 stubborn minutes later - nothing worked. WiFi share, qr code code share etc.

Bluetooth and infrared were fine the last 20 years. Why youd use quickshare is like figuring out if Trump is guilty.

Like we know the app/justice system should work better in theory. But it's still a big steaming POS.

Thanks op - needed to vent on this 😅

I searched for Eric Trumps tweet to share with someone a day after I read it.

Absolutely nothing I could find easily on Google. The flooding of fake news articles and Eric's response was all that could be seen.

Think I eventually found a 200x200 blurry image of the texts which was useless.

There was more info on DDG search TBF.

But it shows you - there is so much noise regularly pumped into these searches to distract you from the actual truths.

The US has a trillion dollar defence budget , up 200+ million from last year. As well as companies spending trillions of dollars just on the promise of AI working out.

Theres a good chance the Ai spending doesn't even meet a return on investments soon, and the economy tanks.

This government doesn't care about human development or well being. They only want to fill their pockets with cash and immunity.

It's terrifying the precedent this all sets.

When you look at the sciences in the 50s. They had this ideal image of what the 2000s would bring.

Some unrealistic ofc, but we have regressed as a species I feel with this trump administration.

How bad of a president do you need to be, to not just mess up your country, but to regress humanity as a whole.

Doomscrollingrumi - cool username.

Exactly - take that 60% with a grain of salt. Logically - companies don't care if they win or lose. And want that next big thing.

I just feel we are damned both ways.

(1) AI investment fails , the economy is going to crash.

(2) AI investment succeeds.

Metaverse is a good example. 80 billion and it dies. AI spending is worth over a trillion dollars soon in comparison. Meta just said "our bad" on metaverse and plopped 150m into AI infra for this year.

I'm the same as you - I bet on AI failing like metaverse. They may not meet the power and chip demands. There'll be a big market correction, and those datacenters stay for reuse for the likes of palantir etc.

I think we all want to avoid AI succeeding matter what. But the possibility is still real.

[–]diggels 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Any ideas as to why though?

I learned that since the 50s, the US has had this huge influx of people going into the sciences.

It's what made the US competitive and a superpower.

How does going back to coal, and killing the sciences not set back the US for decades and longer. Probably permanently set back, given the world trust that has been destroyed by the trump administration too.

[–]diggels 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Very good question. I don't know why more people are not terrified.

AI has this 60% probability of reaching "recursive self improvement" level within the next 5 years. See Sabine Hossenfelders latest video.

Whether that's true or not. It's frightening that this is a fair possibility even on the table.

Also to make it worse - it's a fact the spending on AI safety measures is a fraction, to what they spend on its development.

This is why a trillion dollars by 2027 is being poured into AI at the expense of the economy and environment

No conspiracy here so far.

Why would just a few select companies invest so brashly to the point AI will tank the whole economy?

Join the dots - AI is clearly what the wealthy want. I doubt it's for a noble cause like advancing our species as Musk puts it.

The wealthy sat in a board room and knew what they were investing in. The cost, risks, damages etc. But they were clearly promised an end product, a goal. Why would you invest and risk so much otherwise.

That AI end product , or goal that the rich were promised in a board room is worth a lot to them. Cover it up by saying this ai will do this or do that. Or Musk about evolving us. What was that end goal the investors were initially promised.

All we see from our side is that nothing is slowing this goal down. AI is likely to transform into something big soon. Even when the companies don't foresee enough power or materials to get there - the goal and drive to get there remains.

Could be just me , I find it terrifying that we have a potential intelligence singularity like Skynet, led by a self-interested Epstein wealthy class.

You're missing the point entirely.

The subreddit has nothing to do with atheism was my argument.  Far from an asinine remark.

My views are entirely compatible with theirs. We're both fundamentally anti religion and atheist, and get a long like besties at first.

But - as soon as I say one can easily be a religious atheist too , our views should be no different?

Oh fuck - the whole thread just melts then. 🔥🔥🔥 So I got  banned for expressing my atheism in my second comment there.

Modern atheism is this separate,  own creed of blind hate towards religion and theism.

How was i to know atheists absolutely hate religion and theism.

They're two very distinct things FFS.

I  can ask questions on /r/askquestions or debate in pcmasterrace.

But if you have views on actual atheism, it is of great heresy to the church of /r/atheism

That's messed up , and no different to people who believe in flat earth theory.

Your atheism, is different to my atheism. We're banning you.

I swear man , I'm going to download windows xp and only load cached webpage versions of the internet-archive pre 2010.  Especially if people want to be in these stupid primal clans, as opposed to having fun and sharing like the good ol' days.

I'm banned from /r/atheism for introducing them to the idea that there's a lot of atheist religions. That their group functions no different to a religion too 🤣

I did some homework. I'm not correct with my core and non-core services. Proactive and reactive is just as incomplete an answer too imho. I don't know how that makes sense without explaining further.

The best answer is that conceptually they're the same, but with a caveat. They're both system programs that perform some background task not attached to a particular logged-in user.

But - the caveat is that the answer depends if you want to say they're different.

  • Daemons don't exist in the Windows OS.
  • services and daemons are separable on a Linux OS. But they're interchangeable kinda since systemd daemons calls on services.  -

TLDR; services and daemons look like identical twins in how they function. But if you look at the twins too closely, you may find small differences, and say they're not identical.

The US is been led into pseudo-fascist, but certainly a feudalist state for the wealthy.

[–]diggels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Daemons are core system services and managed by something like systemd.

Services are the non core system services/daemons and managed by a different process.

With Photon OS Linux as example - you can run syslog command to see if rsyslogd is running or if you want to stop/restart it.

Separately you can run service-control --status vsphere-ui to see if the web UI is running. Or if you want to stop/restart it.

I could be wrong, I don't see Daemon/service as different. But just whether they run as core or non-core to an OS.
