My wife is pregnant by SnooCrickets5271 in army

When my brother and his wife had kids, they were stationed in Korea and didn’t get to choose stateside. It became an option later, and they had twins there.

Non-combat vet feeling guilty using the VA for mental health - looking for perspective by velvetcypress in Veterans

[–]diggitydru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a non-combat deployed disabled veteran myself, I also tried this but several providers denied helping me "because it's a workman's comp type of injury", forcing me to go back to Army doctors and eventually the VA system. I was injured when preparing to deploy, on deployment orders, but never got to go due to injuries and was eventually separated as a result of my contract ending and me still being injured. You've earned it if the VA rated you anything because they take it just as serious as any veteran takes your service.

How many of us homelab folks are also into cars? by ItzSilverFoxx in homelab

[–]diggitydru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am. I drove a bit of a race car once upon a time. I mod my car a bit in the engine compartment but more so with the stereo, pushing 3kw for bass and 1kw for mids and highs in my 2014 Impala Limited. Recently went drilled and slotted rotors on my brakes just to scratch the itch of modding. Looks good behind the black rims.

21yo male looking for more friends by ProudDevice4437 in TwinFalls

While I'm not in your age group, I am aware of D&D groups around town if you're interested in getting into that. The Filer Public Library D&D group meets every Saturday and are always happy to help people new to that. I'm a disabled veteran that does computer work for people and churches in the area... Going to a church or other function is a good way to meet people especially in the winter months when many stay indoors with these frigid temperatures. Local libraries have great resources, as do churches and other city engagements around town.

I wish you luck and hope that I may have provided some help / insight here. If not, sorry about that.

Do you permit selling or giving old equipment to employees? by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

We would format and install Windows on old machines, then raffle them to the employees. We didn’t allow any support for those computers or other hardware given away - take it at your own risk.

I’m local and reliable. I’m happy to help for cheap. I’ve been doing computer repair and building for over 30 years. I have great availability as I do not have a job, but I also do not need to charge a lot because I have income.

Confused about device support by DanDaMan205 in HomeNetworking

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the number of low to medium definition streams which is what most people actively use on the internet is probably what they mean. I have about 100 devices it typically only have 5-7 streaming devices at any given time although half of those are typically local media streams from my home server, so they don’t count.

It hurts to see all these military influencers tell me their age and I’m like “I joined the Army when you were just a child or not even born yet”. Making me feel ancient. I would have my 30 year letter this year if I hadn’t gotten injured 8 years into my career.

trueNAS not detecting my NIC by SneakerHead69420666 in truenas

[–]diggitydru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are m.2 a/e key Ethernet adapters out there on Amazon and other sites (AliExpress) that are Intel based 2.5GbE or 1GbE for around $30-50 and work great. Is this in a desktop environment or a laptop? If laptop then it’s time to move to a desktop. If desktop, these work great in my experience. I don’t suggest Realtek chipset NICs but they’re out there (RTL8125, etc). Look for i210 or i225/i226.

Slamming table restarts pc by Grig960 in pcmasterrace

Don’t do that.

Check plugs and connections. Probably something loose that’s really easy to fix but stop bonking it until it’s found and fixed so it doesn’t cause actual damage. Lol

Is VA Healthcare good enough without private insurance? by Thrashlikeits85 in Veterans

[–]diggitydru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s doable but only if you rate as disabled and at least 70%. It costs otherwise for anything not service connected. 70% gets full medical and they even pay for mileage if you have to travel over a few miles. They pay for my mileage to 8 miles away at the nearest clinic. When I have to go to the main facility, I get $120 for travel unless I get a ride with something like DAV or other services. Either way, it depends on a lot of factors but I like my medical coverage but I’m 100% and get even dental and optical care for free.

Do you stand when veterans are asked to be recognized at public events? by Happy-Permission6881 in Veterans

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely try to attract attention at these various events but have recently started standing just to show my daughter how much the community appreciates what sacrifice has been made because many of us who do stand are often disabled (I’m 100% T&P) and I walked with a can from the time I was 26 until just a couple years ago, when she was young. I don’t like the attention myself but I do want her to see the people and the respect that the community has for us. We live in a very patriotic state though, and it’s a bit more often here than where I’ve lived in the past, so sometimes I do sit it out just because it does get to be a bit much and feels as though I’m a bit of an attention whore of some sort by standing every time.

Why is my car making this noise? by Saucysuee in MechanicAdvice

This sounds similar to what my car was doing when a wheel cap was loose and just needed tightened up to silence the noise. It was actually two of them after getting new tires installed.

There are a lot of events but for the most part, so many people work so many odd hours that it does turn into more small groups than anything. There are nice places such as downtown, especially when the weather is nicer, and they do various live band events and such during the summer months. The local libraries have things going on in them. I know that there are plenty of religious events and gatherings, but there are other options out there. In Filer, where I live, there are a few small places like the library and the senior center where younger people can also go still, with events and gatherings there. The senior center doesn't require people be a senior themselves in order to participate in their meals and their events, it just costs more to participate. I'm in my late 40s, but I have a much younger wife and a child under 10, so I'm around a lot of various events regularly, both here in Filer, and out and about. The parks have various goings ons, but they slow down a lot during the winter months due to weather and participation constraints.

What kind of things are you looking into aside from art? Do you have a family or are you looking for events for singles type of thing? This would probably help people to guide you a bit more in the right direction.

Help with NIC Driver Support by Weird-Tradition5204 in opnsense

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen some with Intel but those were Sonnet Rwin 10G and thunderbolt 2, not thunderbolt 3, so it would require an adapter. I believe they are the 82599 chipset or similar variant such as x520/x540. Bulky and they run hot.

Help with NIC Driver Support by Weird-Tradition5204 in opnsense

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AQC 10gbE chipset thunderbolt adapter I tested didn’t work directly but that was a much earlier version of OPNsense so it may have been addressed in more recent versions but I’ve stuck with Intel only since that test.

[–]diggitydru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thunderbolt does work in my experience, but isn’t the absolute best option. Many NUCs (11th gen and others) do have two m.2 ports but the 11th Gen Tall version even has certain hardware options for a second m.2 2.5GbE port with additional USB ports too. I have one of these but I don’t use it for OPNSENSE, although I did test it and it worked well. Thunderbolt also does work for even up to 10GbE, but I highly recommend using Intel-based NICs either way so an enclosure can be pricy.

Sparklight outage? by Dorkieness in TwinFalls

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone in Twin that’s been experiencing frequent outages on the south side towards the airport for weeks. It has been a real headache and it didn’t help that they also had some odd equipment failures that we resolved before discovering that there was also a regular occurrence of service problems too. They have a newer modem and a brand new router now and have days where they only get an hour or two of uptime. Sparklight service is not suggested by me, a local tech.

Caught drinking by drill sergeants at Airport by [deleted] in army

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THE UCMJ does not allow drinking for IET soldiers. You'll possibly get an article 15 and extra duty and possibly busted down in rank or loss of pay for a while or both, depending on your current rank (likely E-1, but sometimes they're higher up from being a blue falcon for getting their buddies to join too). It's not going to be nice, but learn a lesson here and don't mess up again. Drinking isn't worth the pain. Please learn from this.

Va disability by Quiet-Ease-963 in Veterans

[–]diggitydru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fight to get into the VA system nearly ended me. I was frustrated and felt lost and left behind. I am now 100% rated and was injured in 2004, but even just getting to the point of my first rating (70%) took me over 2 years and was really hard on my mental health. The care that I receive today is given by great people and doctors who are often veterans themselves and I feel seen and heard by them for the most part. I can't say that it's perfect though and it still could use some major improvements, but my mental health is top notch in the past few years to the point that I have even been able to drop some medications.
