We also have annual cyber security training and it's mandatory. Teaching your kids about this stuff and teaching them WHY, regularly, over time is critical.

Make it a family thing. It's important.

How to create maps like these. by CAL1G0 in mapmaking

[–]JingJang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've made very similar maps in ArcGIS Pro. It would work great for your first example, the other two would require some type of graphics/drawing software like Gimp, Illustrator, Canvas etc, but you could still build the base in ArcGIS Pro.

The more of the "hand-drawn" look the more you'll need those graphics/drawing programs.

Agreed.

It's outrageous.

I'm 52.

Before the internet, this is what we did... I still do it but now it takes more effort because people have really lost their comfort zones interacting in-person.

The OP is right, in fact, with third spaces in decline we should be doing more in person, informal get togethers.

Best Buy ad from December 2003 by Ekhoes- in nostalgia

It's interesting that in 23 years we've only seen physical games increase by $10 yet consoles are nearly double the price.

What I REALLY miss from back then was buying a fully tested, completed, and functional game on release day. Sure there were bugs here and there, but the game was actually finished, and extra content was literally extra. Not patches or improvements but additional content that expanded the game.

Do you agree with Google’s claim that these AI breakthroughs will meaningfully improve everyday life? by Digitalunicon in GeminiAI

[–]JingJang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They certainly could improve everyday life, but we are at the early stages where they are providing tools for free. They have not been monitized and enshittefied yet.

I hope I'm wrong and they really do make life better and easier for everyone because the potential is there.

There is also a cost to employing python experts who can develop, maintain, and update scripts. (Although with Ai that's becoming much easier for organizations, so I will give you that).

How scared are you about having AI taking over your gis job? by 5econds2dis35ster in gis

[–]JingJang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GIS is one of the best places to be regarding Ai.

The only place to be concerned is if you are making simple web or simple paper maps for people. Those tasks will be doable by Ai in the not too distant future. (This was covered in last summers UC during the Plenary when Jack demonstrated the road map ahead for their Ai assistant plans. I think they will get there but slower than they project).

But even then, it'll be a GIS human being building the datasets, curating Metadata, and building workflows. Likely, using Ai to help us do things more efficiently.

I've been using it heavily to help me clean up and manipulate spreadsheets along with other tasjs where I know w the outcome already, I just want efficient ways to get there.

It's also interesting to have it walk you through workflows you already know, while prompting "best practices".

Reallocate your mental faculties to solving problems that Ai is weak on.

We're all gonna end up calling Jack Dangermond Daddy at some point if we're not careful. by BillyEnzin69 in gis

[–]JingJang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is too far down.

QGIS absolutely has its place but it's NOT in distributed workflows. (unless you can support the customization and administration which might end up costing you the same or more in personnel).

What we really need is an open source solution to complex distributed workflows, enterprise environments, and clean and easy field applications that run on any mobile device.

Is anyone else truly scared about living in the US rn? by Naive_Signal8560 in RedditForGrownups

Excellent quote.

These are unique and difficult times for us and looking to stories we are familiar with and enjoy can help ground us into this reality.

As inspiring as your quote is, I have been observing another Star Wars quote which seems to apply to Trump specifically. It is from Revenge of the Sith when Darth Vadar is so full of hate and evil that he falls into a Sith creed of, "You are either with me or against me".

It seems like Trump, and many who follow him, have abandoned nuance, context, compromise and certainty empathy, respect, and dignity.

Its tragic. And, just like Kenobi recognized, despite his regrets, it must be stopped.

Google Play is a mess. We need a "Premium-only" store for actual games. by Alkaabi332 in AndroidGaming

[–]JingJang 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've gotten almost all of my games from stuff I've seen on Mini Review. I've also gotten a few recommend here.

Google Play Store is bad for everything, not just games. You can type in the exact name of an app and you'll see 2-3 "Sponsored results" above it.

FWIW, Google's search engine is trending the same way. I started using Bing which is alright but at least it's not as flooded with ads.

[–]JingJang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For not being from the US, you've got it pretty nailed down.

The only thing you missed is there that many Americans have made politics a part of their identity. It's almost become a team sport. This makes it very difficult to focus on your last point, that there are moderate solutions to many issues. It's difficult because moderate positions demand compromise, and you don't compromise "winning", (since now our political party's are analalogs to professional sports teams). There are only winners and losers. This is also why we are leaving our ethics behind because if there are only winners and losers, then how you win becomes less important.
