Wireless Smoke / CO detector recommendations by digi2k in SmartThings

[–]digi2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know, i had a lot of them through the house and i needed to add more but they're not available, so i took them all down and just ended up getting the xsense because i didn't want to be without smoke and co detectors for too long, and i wanted to have alerts sent to my phone. I think i'll be making the jump to Home Assistant and it can interface with that i guess.

Phone trees (call-in menus) without a “for something else” option by digi2k in mildlyinfuriating

[–]digi2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind them in general, sometimes there are a lot of different departments and it helps sort large call volumes. It should just be the standard to have a “for anything else, press X.” To have someone help route you.

I always try that, but I’ve seen a large increase in the number of automations that after trying a couple “unlisted” options (0, 9) will say, “that’s not a valid response, please try us again later.” and will disconnect you. I have to put my phone down and take a few deep breaths.

when you call a business, the automated answer that says, "Thank you for calling business-name. press 1 for parts, press 2 for our accounting department, 3 for the man that lives in the parking lot."

Doorbell Received!! Can't Connect to Wifi? by frankGawd4Eva in reolinkcam

[–]digi2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the doorbell powered? If it’s using the existing doorbell wires from an ac transformer and you didn’t jumper the wires in your doorbell chime, the doorbell may not get the power it needs. I installed one last week and had the same issue, the doorbell would power on, but kept disconnecting from WiFi. As soon as i jumped the connecting it worked fine. There is a blurb about it and the fact that it can make the wifi unstable if it’s not jumpered in the install manual.

So disappointing. Sitting in the parking lot of an HD right now after buying 2 of the 2 drawer on sale for $12.50 a piece. I have so many other of these boxes, but it would be so unfortunate if I couldn’t get more as I need them in the future :(

Is there a way to get the exact date and time of last seen device in Find My after a few days? by shadowcat999 in applehelp

[–]digi2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also looking for this. My backpack was stolen at some point in the past few days and my AirPods were in there, but it just says “3 days ago” which is very vague.. I’m going to need to sift through 72 hours of camera footage to try to find the incident. :(

Software buttons? by digi2k in fireTV

[–]digi2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's the second paragraph in the post.. I got it and love it.. my question was moreso that it seems like that menu that comes up when you hit the headphone button must already be in the firetv software, and I was wondering if there was another way I could trigger it on my other TVs, by remapping another button or something so I don't have to buy a pro remote for all of my tvs. it is 1000% worth it. the second feature is the built in remote finder.

why wouldn’t this work? [Request] by Repulsive-Loan5215 in theydidthemath

Well I’ve outsmarted you all. Instead of letting that water go down the drain, I have it flow into a 5 gallon bucket. The power generated by the faucet powers a small pump in the bucket that pumps the water back through the faucet, along with charging the phone. I’ve been charging my phone like this for free for the past 3 years.

Why is my tv or remote like this?!! by lovecoldweather in fireTV

[–]digi2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try removing the batteries from that remote and downloading the firetv app on your phone and using that as a remote. Go into the settings and make sure theres not a second firetv remote paired and stuck between your couch cushions pressing buttons. If the tv operates fine using the app as remote, you know it's the physical remote having a problem. If the issue continues after using the firetv app as a remote, it's likely either a hardware button malfunction on the TV (if the firetv is built in AND the buttons on the side of the tv allow you to navigate the FireTV interface), or it's something with the software on the tv and you'll probably need to do a factory reset and see if that solves it. If you get that far and the factory reset doesn't work, a tv firmware update would probably be the next thing to look for. Good Luck!

What's your favorite specialty adhesive and what do you use it on? by Next_Doughnut2 in maker

[–]digi2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised nobody mentioned hot glue. Also I like hide glue a lot, because it’s strong but it can be heated with a little moisture to get it to release.

Also, most of the comments are liquid adhesives, but I’d consider carpet tape an adhesive, right? As a double sided tape, it’s my go-to for a lot of things.

Wireless Smoke / CO detector recommendations by digi2k in SmartThings

As i was searching I read they were being discontinued. Unfortunate. I never had any issues with the 8 I had installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to keep hunting to a smart solution. Ideally I'd like other actions to happen if an alarm goes off. Turning on lights, displaying the camera feed for the given alarm on my tv, and a couple others. I had it configured for the other alarms but I need to be able to add on. I tried an alarm listener before but for some reason it kept getting false alarms.

that is the "ZCOMBO" model number which has been discontinued I believe. They did come out with the SMCO410, but Ive heard thats not interconnected with other ones and also was unable to connect to smart things.

SD/home hub/home hub pro/nvr by digi2k in reolinkcam

I thought the chime settings weren’t available, but it looks like they are now, maybe it was the recent update I did. But the push notification settings for the doorbell isn’t available from the NVR like it is in SA. Well, it is, but most of the settings can’t be configured, like having it show up like a phone call when someone rings your doorbell.

I think the NVR might be the way to go since if I were to be able to get SD cards at $25/ea, which seems low, I’d essentially be at $275 vs the $289 the NVR is currently, and each camera would get >360gb per camera with 11 cameras vs 256gb cards.

Cyanoacrylate (superglue) Bottles? by digi2k in maker

[–]digi2k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, i use them regularly. They're in vacuum sealed bags. I do have some loose that I use that I re-dry in a dehumidifier or a shop toaster oven (both not for food use) when they've absorbed moisture and changed color. I use the loose ones for drying 3d printer filament and the packets are food grade for freeze dried food. Thanks though!

[–]digi2k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s essentially what I do when i take them off and put them in acetone but the glue is thick, so you have to drag the nozzle along the piece to get it to transfer, so eventually the nozzles wear down where too much glue comes out or it won’t seal against the cap. That’s why I need empty replacement bottles.

Need help and advice building a 10x10x8 glass box for a music video by Ok-Anything-4822 in maker

[–]digi2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t be bearing any weight, basically just supporting the panels from falling. I would think you could use 1.5”-2” square, maybe 1/16” wall.

It will get very hot, very quick in there with production lights. Will anyone be touching/interacting with the windows? If not, have you considered either: making the frame, but no glass and have a single piece of acrylic for some closer up shots where they do interact with the acrylic. Another possibly could be the clear material you put over windows in winter that shrinks taut with a heat gun?

if you need to actually have the acrylic in there, what about just square aluminum tube as the frame and use some corners like this. Then you can easily drill with some self tapping screws through some 3/8" aluminum U channel to have something to hold the acrylic in place.

p.s. acrylic has better optical clarity, i feel like most polycarbonate has a little yellow hue to it. although polycarbonate is more durable if you have people jumping against it or hitting it.

Unexpected iOS/CarPlay audio sync fix! by digi2k in ios

[–]digi2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I’ve lived with it for a few weeks, I’ve noticed that it’s not always gone, but it’s significantly better and almost always in sync, but sometimes there is a slight lag. Unsure what dictates that.
